Installing crown molding can be a challenging task, but with proper planning and the right tools, you can achieve professional-looking results. This video series is my master class.
I show from beginning to end how to install crown molding. Many skilled carpenters avoid crown molding and coping, but I will show you how easy both are with a few simple techniques and shop-built jigs.
Here are a few links to tools that help with crown molding and carpentry in general.

I dont nail my corners outside or inside I stay away with the nails about 12 to 14 inches from the corners so when I do the the next piece I can adjust the mitre for a good fit.

The corner pins, small and embedded in drywall, secure the crown in the correct position set by the crown gauge. Nails into studs are placed further away as demonstrated. These corner pins are easy to adjust if necessary. It's a faster method than letting the corners float, which I did for years until Gary Katz taught me this technique. Watch the entire video series, and you'll see how efficient and clean it is-zero callbacks, but plenty of referrals. 😎🤙

Using this jig over the entire length of a wall where the ceiling is not flat gives a different result than snapping straight lines (dictated by the jig) on the wall from corner to corner. Using the jig everywhere causes the crown to retain its spring angle everywhere, but the bottom of the crown will follow any waves in the ceiling. Alternatively, if the bottom of the crown follows straight lines on the wall, that visual line is maintained, causing the spring angle of the crown to change as the height to the non-flat ceiling changes. I've used both methods to produce results the clients approved. That said, I'm not sure if either method is strictly better. Thoughts?

Did that for decades. The jig is faster and no room for error. I learned it from Gary Katz. My only gripe is using cut offs for 20 years.😎🤙

Do that through the whole house before getting started cutting crown, a lot faster, also not all corners are the same, I feel like the outside/inside templates are more accurate since you already take both sides into account when marking where your crown is going but I can give Ron's way a try,, he has not disappointed yet! 👍

You could just take 2 short pieces of crown and cut your 2 outer cuts on one and the 2 inner cuts on the other and use those to match up your joints, then there's no guessing if the wall or ceiling has a bow or dip.. or is not plumb level or square

If you take a piece of electrical tape over the top, down the back / down the wall so to speak, you can then pull the tape ends to adjust the crown, when done cut it of.

What type of nailer do you use for this? And what type of nail? I’ve been told DeWalt for miter saw but can I go cheap and do a Ryobi for the nailer?

Cut a few angle samples check to fit cut and secure , DONE
@TheSmartWoodshop
@TheSmartWoodshop Жыл бұрын
I don't have to check the angle. If the crown is cut at the proper spring angle and installed the same it fits. I never check a corner and it fits perfect every time. The crown gauge is the magic tool that traps the crown at that angle. Plus it takes less room in my bag than test pieces. I did the test pieces for decades before I was taught how to make the gauge. The gauge is faster plus make it once and done for life. But, you can keep doing it however you are comfortable. I just wanted to teach my system for those that want to learn. You should watch the whole series to understand how the whole system works, you may find something that helps. I find in all things it is best to keep and open mind and a philosophy of learning rather than knowing.

Crazy enough they mill the angle on the crown for you
@TheSmartWoodshop
@TheSmartWoodshop Жыл бұрын
The spring angle, typically 38 or 45 degrees, is crucial for proper crown installation. Incorrect installation, such as cutting at 38 degrees and installing at 37.5, can result in a large gap. This shop-made gauge ensures the angle is maintained during installation, as the angle cannot be easily determined by the human eye. Using an install gauge eliminates errors and is faster than trying to roll to fit. This was learned by me through experience and instruction by Gary Katz, a master finish carpenter. My only problem with the gauge is that I installed over 10,000' before I learned it for myself. I hope this series will help other professionals finish carpenters coming up to jump to the front of the line. 😎🤙
