Great Vid!! I think a potential good one would be your specific DE and workflow and basically a “day in the life” of a seasoned user so that new users can see how that’s like (apologies if that’s something you’ve done already).

Hey, great suggestion. I haven't done anything like that yet. I'll add it to the list!

Been daily driving Debian for over two years now on my Gaming PC, first year was Debian 11 but having upgraded to Debian 12 I'm really enjoying Gnome desktop. It's very minimal and gets out of your way as you're using your computer, however has excellent capabilities such as multiple workspaces. When opening an app I always just hit the meta key type the name, I also have most of what I need opening up on boot so yeah it's been very nice.

Thanks for sharing. I do that a lot too -- just meta + search! Works great for files too.

One of the most useful actions on a laptop in Gnome is the three-finger swipe left and right to change workspaces. MacOs also supports the same usage pattern.

Thanks! Those gestures are truly next level.

Just did a new Debian install this afternoon from the GNOME Live ISO and also added KDE, XFCE and LXQT for comparison. Eager to test out docker containers on this old PC before I commit my home server to it. BTW you've got some noticeable reverb on your audio. I think it's the ceiling fan disrupting how your voice bounces off the ceiling. Thank you for this excellent intro to GNOME basics! It makes so much sense now that you've explained a lot of the key binds.

Thanks! Dang, yeah, totally forgot I had the fan running at full blast. It's hot here! I'll get it fixed next time (might swap out to a lapel mic). Nice! I've never used a GUI for a home server, but why not? Makes some things easier. If you've got the storage and the RAM for it, GNOME couldn't hurt!

Really, really tried to like Gnome, but it's such an "on-rails" desktop environment that any kind of deviation punishes you harshly. Some of the decisions made by the devs are frankly, imho, deeply blinkered. Grateful to have the customisation of Plasma.
@Community-Compute2 ай бұрын
I can't argue with you there! dconf opens things up a bit more, but it's nowhere near the level of customization you get with Plasma.

I used to use Ubuntu a lot and even some older Linux Mint versions came with GNOME, and after some time I just decided I wanted something more "standard". Nowadays I like Cinnamon and KDE, but I would also say you can't go wrong with XFCE. In any case, DEs that use GTK are all interoperable with their applications so it's not usually a problm.

Yeah, I get it! I just wanted to try to understand the GNOME "workflow", I guess. I also find myself preferring the more "standard" workflow in DEs like KDE. That's what I use on my desktop.

I was following along and trying the meta + numbers to open apps, and then my gnome crashed! I think. It went completely unresponsive, visually, everything froze but the audio kept playing along in the background. Lol
@Community-Compute2 ай бұрын
Interesting! What distro/version of the DE are you running? Maybe double check that you haven't rebound the meta + number keys to something else too!

@@Community-Compute Debian 12/Gnome. I suspect it’s the combination of extensions I’m running but I wouldn’t know which one.
@Community-Compute2 ай бұрын
@@temp_user_id Yeah, that could definitely be it. In the video, I was just running the AppIndicator Icons extension. That's generally the only one I use, but there are tons of cool ones!
