Great David Goggin's impersonation. 😂 I love the way you defined discipline. I feel like a lot of the times I overcomplicate it when it's simply doing stuff your brain doesn't want to do. Action is the key.

I did this. Watched the video, stood up. After the video I did the ten push-ups. Then I cleaned my room, cleaned my bathroom. And I kept doing it, and I literally went on a run which I’ve been holding off for a very long time. I did a ton of household chores. I got so much done in the span of a couple hours rather then the span of a couple days. This was something I seriously needed, thank you so much. I hope I can keep this up.

personally.. this video is a good reminder to stay disciplined however its more on the physical side than mental side for me.. Like I can do 10 pushups or a run outside even if i dont want to. but doing math revision or even thinking about doing it for no reason at all cant make me feel like its a game especially when it annoys you and bores you . for me theres no motivation when you dont even use it in real life either.. only for upcoming deadlines / or tests... thats one thing i can never get over when i try to do better things. Unless another person can motivate me or gives me a task for it.. I am never going to get past that border and expand my comfort zone

try riddles, it's fun, in a short time you'll get most of the mechanisms behind them and it will be SUPER fun solving one in 1 second, but then you'll also crave more difficult ones and eventually you will find riddles like in TedEd and you'll start to see math as a game. Really. Even if it's not the same as the one they present you at school the subject is the same. Also for math try to actually understand things, ex. what do all these variables mean? Why when "a" is negative this thing looks like this? How and why does this work? Does it have anything in common with things I studied in the past? ecc..

I don't know what your career path is, but if it's something STEM that is not IT or med, then you will absolutely need a lot of the math stuff that you are complaining about. I would recommend building discipline to learn for yourself rather than doing academics because of school. Learning for yourself is much better than learning it and forgetting after an exam.
@Mayank-tm2km

In the video he mentioned that the task should be only slightly difficult to be challenging and enjoyable at the same time, apparently maths is a bit too challenging for you, try asking your friends to explain you some concepts and questions again, studying with your friends will make it more enjoyable
@ad2409
@ad2409 8 ай бұрын
Hey, revision's overwhelming for me too (but in a dfferent sense), but a good way to look at it isn't "oh, how do I do revision with this method" it's more of "go do 5 minutes of maths revision everytime your brain doesn't want to". It might help that way, idk?

Speaking of comfort zones and having a fun time outside of it made me think of something a Danish scout told me about comfort zones. She said that a lot of people think there are 2 zones, the comfort zone and the discomfort zone, when in fact they are 3. Outside your comfort zone is the challenge zone and outside the challenge zone is the discomfort zone (and there is nothing outside that). She explained that you can stay in your comfort zone if you want but if you go into the challenge zone for a bit and then return to the comfort zone then your comfort zone expands a little bit in the direction you went. But you have to be careful because if you go to far and enter the discomfort zone and then manage to return to your comfort zone, your comfort zone will shrink on the same side as you went. I think that’s a cool way of thinking about it and similar to how you say that you have to take discipline slow and not take too big of a step
@guildofwhat

This. I always think to do stuff outside the zone as a punishment, not activity, making it even harder to build discipline, or even look outside it.
@huldar
@huldar 2 ай бұрын
@@guildofwhat That sounds rough. But if you want to expand your zone in some direction (public speaking, heights, etc.) it can be a good idea to have some help from a friend and take small steps. It's the drop that hollows the stone by being consistent. Good luck!

Hell after those pushups I decided to air-sit for the rest of the video and my gosh was it painful, but it felt fun, and like a good challenge. The way you explained things and how casual things were made out to be despite being steps for a better future really reached out to me. Another idea that really helped me build self discipline is that self discipline is an act of self love. It's a sign that you love and care for yourself. I've been thinking the same as well man, I used to start hard, just trying to get result fast, at first it's kinda fun, got it going for a few weeks, but then it's just become too much. I've tried to improve myself many times, and always ended up failing, and after all that, I realized that, you really need to start easy. Focus on getting used to it, it doesn't matter if you only exercise for 5 minutes or only study for 15 minutes a day, what's important is that you take action. And from that, slowly build up, increase the time and difficulty. Focus on consistency first, only after you're consistent you can focus on optimizing it.

Hey, I'm sure this will get buried under all the comments, but I want to thank you for this video. I'm a psychology student, I have a really expansive background in philosophy, and yet for the life of me discipline eludes me. I am diagnosed with ADHD and Bipolar disorder so that's an extra large obstacle most people don't have to face. I want to thank you because for the first time, someone has put it in a way that has made discipline feel within reach. This is a very kind video. A nonjudgemental one, and one that doesn't frame failure at disclipline as a shortcoming to beat yourself up over. Here it's the opposite: it makes anything you do feel like a small vicotry you can pat yourself in the back for. That kindness is powerful. I have read so many neuroscientists, psychologists and philosophers tackle this subject without ever having it be as effective as you have put it here. It's sweet, it's joyful and it's warm-hearted, and we need more of that in the world.

0:12 what most people don't understand about discipline you don't need a big act to invoke discipline discipline is simply not feeling like doing something and rejecting your brain by doing it - and that literally works with anything 2:29 it matters less where You start and matters more that you slowly expand your comfort zone 2:55 you Need to hit that sweet spot where it's just challenging enough where you actually enjoy and are motivated to solve it 3:31 keep the Mantra of what does my brain not want to do right now and repeat that as many times as possible every day challenges become more fun that way most people wish that the walk home is sunny some people can deal with it if the walk home is rainy but I hope that it's pouring I hope that my shoe is torn I hope that my backpack is extra heavy that day because for most people in this scenario they'll have to use their actual brain power to think okay should I perform this discipline act to complete this challenge but for us we are so aware of

Yessir. I've been doing more and more pullups, going out of my way to eat more protein, and just doing more for myself in general. Meditation's next. Glad I'm on this journey we call life!

wow i just sat down- edit after watching it: that was def the best advice i ever listened to. i stood up, did some jogging in place, did some high knees, some stretching, a straddle and i feel so much better. another way to gamify stuff you don't want to do is saying "i BET i can't _____ (insert something you don't want to do)" this is sooo helpful for my adhd self, i hope you'll find it useful.

1:30 broo i started to learn about discipline and these kind of things properly just after pandemic time, cuz my life was just soo mess tht i wasn't able to study these kind of things, but i remember that even not conscious about that i improved myself a lot until the point i was running in the rain and having fun, and surrounded with people wondering why i was so energetic haha Your content are just very precious, keep doing that! Bro, now i gotta sleep, how the hell did you persuade me into sleeping when I have ABSLOUTE ZERO sleepyness rn?? Also, this vid made me rememember me of a saying from Saint Fransisco de Assis(im brazilian btw) wich translates to "start by doing what's nescessary then do whats possible, and suddently you'll be doing the impossible", this vid also made me think of discipline as doing things out of the pure spite of: why not?
