Regarding the fire bug: It happens when a perfect finds a criminal close by but can't plot a valid path to it. I can't really figure out a way to properly fix this right now. I believe it's an original bug but is exacerbated because there are more rioters now!

a very strange bug to.. i wonder what quirk in the coding that not only have a 'delayed timer' for its effects to start 'manifest' but what causes it XD ...or maby its just due to all the healthy youngsters being sent to the mines only over age workers where left for the prefects so they only hade the strength to walk a 1/10th of the distance etc ? ;)

@@crudelios how does the game determine if a rioter is near? Could it be changed from a distance check to a pathing flood fill type thing? Or distance initial check plus secondary flood fill check if the distance check succeeds?

The fires started because you built at least one of the gold mines (or something else) onto native land (just check it with the overlay - you also see the natives in "attack mode" but stuck in place if you look at them), which aggro's them. But as they're walled into the valley, they can't reach your city, so they don't actually attack you. However, your prefects are now still trying to fight them, and as they have no path towards the natives, they'll just despawn after a few tiles, causing stuff to catch fire further down their usual path which they now never reach. Same happened to me on that very map (a statue was the culprit in my case). Do not underestimate the reach of the native trading huts, it's much bigger than that of the regular huts

at first I suspected that the prefects suddenly wanted to fights the invasion, it makes sense considering the timing...but I never see them do that, native uprising on the other hand..

I would have just given up when those fires started popping up everywhere and prefects disappeared randomly but is great how you managed to overcome it. Made it more interesting to watch too, maybe even better than watching gladiators flight.

An entertaining video as always. However the villas devolved because of the lack of workers in the religion and education areas, thus straining their reach. The immediate evolving was because the walkers were barely able to cover the villas in time. The fires in the city, particularly at random in areas that were covered, were because your prefects were out dealing with protestors and thieves instead of patrolling the streets to deal with fires. The despawning might have been tied to their need to deal with protestors. You had your taxes too high without either increasing your wages above Rome's levels to a corresponding amount, or providing an extra source of food to the plebs, or giving them extra entertainment above their required level. Doing any of those three would allow you to tax plebs at a higher rate without the sentiment mechanic dropping too far. Also a good idea to set up a gold industry early on any map that has it. It's a literal opportunity to print money so you can meet the monetary requests from Caesar and avoid debt.

20 years ago when I played Caesar III, I never had any problems with the rating for favor. I almost never fulfilled any of his requests, I just sent Caesar a gift EVERY January (a lavish one I guess, I don’t remember). And your rating will go up even if you don’t fulfill any of his requests. I don’t know if they change mechanics for rating. But as long as I sent gifts every January, the favor rating always went up.

Yeah that's why custom maps and the new Reconquered Campaign often locks your rank to a low one, so you can't just gift your way to high favour.

Re: Fires.... MAYBE due to bad walking timing some of the building don't get covered. So they catch fire... NOW all the nearby Prefectures rush to put it out... NOW they are no longer walking their routes, which results in more building catching fire along the abandoned routes... SO more prefectures rush to those fires, so more routes are abandoned, so it ends in a feedback loop. I have seen this behavior when I try to put "just enough" prefects. Once a fires DOES breakout, the rest rush to stop it, and everything else is not covered, and they start catching fire. The only way I see to prevent the feedback loop, is to put at least 50% more prefects than required. So a fire never starts.

1:25:30 there might be some hidden firestorm event or something the map maker can set. atleast thats my guess with that many fires lol although, once one fire cought on every firemen runs to that so that might cause that chain reaction

I'm guessing the reason your palaces were unstable is because they kept running out of Oil/Furniture, but the market ladies were JUST reaching them while they were devolving, though I cant say for sure. As for whatever the heck was wrong with prefects, you probably encountered a nasty glitch, like you always do when you play any city builder

I watched the whole thing (while working) ... but I'm a little confused, you seem to be playing a version of Augustus that I can't find on the github -- I see Version 3.2.0 is the one I have and been using for months; but your one has gold in it and path highlighting and stuff... 1:25:00 well.. after 10 years with the recent worker shortage the city where forced to keep fire fighter staff that was over age for the task ,so they cant pull the carts with water etc as fast as they used to , or cheek up on buildings as swiftly any more aka not the strength to get as much done in a given day as when they where spring fresh 20-30 year olds earlier ;) the market lady said she heard rumors the local governor out of personal greed used his legions to force the labour to prioritize his gold mines over other things but that sounds silly dont it ? what use is gold if your storage burns down and melts it to pour back into the earth ^^

If i remember right, you taught us Zac that if you have a getting warehouse disconnected from the resource by roads it will still get correctly, & granaries will get from those disconnected warehouses as long as they're connected to the disconnected warehouse This was a tip during a lugdunum solving vid Have I misremembered? Has Julius or augustus changed that? feature

1:38:00 I'm surprised you didn't restart the game, where it could have been a loop, or any bug repeating itself. Did you do it after the stream ? Did it solve itself when doing a new map ? Otherwise, it would really be interesting to try and reproduce it to find the reason. I'll try on my side. First time seeing so.

Oooooh, I think I have an idea, it seems to have started after seeing all those "locals" everywhere. I think they are angered, can't attack you, aggro your prefects that can't attack either, then despawn.

I’d love to see more “fun” maps, not more “hard” maps. Zach makes it interesting by his experience and persona. However, I’d like to see Zach have more fun, therefore we all have more fun.

i think there's a nice combo somewhere. This map was not that fun i agree. But the other map with the river and modular progression of your city was very interesting and fun imo. If it's too easy then you don't really get to experience much and the play through becomes short and uneventful

16:53 ... too many overdue books? edit: 1:24:50 10 years ago I could walk MUCH further than today. I would think that in ancient Rome arthritis was a lot harder on the working populace than today. Just my 2 copper, take it or leave it. 🙃 1:26:06 That's the truth. 1:36:30 ish .... is that this map or Augustus? I noticed some prefects despawning some time ago, but if it's part of the Augustus code, that would impact this entry (potentially) unfairly. 2:10:00 ... that was a rough ride!

i think the retirement age is only fair to use. You are already providing an unrealistic health system and ludicrous life expectancy for this time period. Most people are either forced to game the system to reset the age anyways, so i think this is a much better system

Not sure if you consider this cheating, but as long as you set your salary to the correct rank by December, you can have it set at Caesar levels for the other 11 months and it won’t impact your favor rating.

I feel like you have a slight pacing problem, i tend to watch your game videos at 1.25 or 1.50 speed, i like chill plays, but not so much where i feel like it's standing still like i could leave and get back half a hour later and nothing happened. It feels like Zootopia administration if you watched it. I don't know the KZbin stats give that info but i can't watch the whole video in one go. Other than, video is awesome!
