Ahhh, at last! This is Prokofiev's take on what Haydn might have written in the 20th century. Haydn was and is much loved for his kindly humor.

This symphony is nicknamed Prokofiev's "Classical" symphony in reference to the Classical era. As has already been mentioned, it's a 20th century reinterpretation of Haydn's style; Prokofiev was inspired to write it after conducting Haydn and thinking about what Haydn might have written if he was still alive in 1916. Even though it's short, Prokofiev's 1st is considered one of the most difficult symphonies to play well because it calls for 20th century technique but has all the transparency of Haydn or Mozart. Alondra de la Parra is one of my favorite present-day conductors, for the exact same reasons you mention.

Prokofiev is brilliant - you'd like his piano concerto #1 and #3

Hi, I recommend you to watch a movie about Beethoven and his Third Symphony - "Beethoven's Eroica" (2003), the movie exists freely on youtube. I know you have already listened to the 3rd symphony, but! 1. You've listened to, I believe, an underwhelming version. 2. It needs to be listened to several times!) The year is 1804 - 34-year-old hot-blooded Beethoven on screen and more. Just incredible movie!

for obvious reasons this symphony was nicknamed the 'Classical' Symphony. This is truly a Classical Music reaction.

I highly recommend checking out Florian Noack's wonderful solo piano arrangement of this symphony, as well as his dazzling arrangement of Borodin's Polovtsian Dances!

Recommend Wagner’s opera Lohengrin. It’s really long so specifically “Elsa’s procession to the cathedral”

I'm not usually a big fan of this symphony (I like Prokofiev's crazier side), but this is a fantastic performance of it, really highlighting the quirky sense of humour and attention to detail.

I love Prokofiev's crazy side too.

Haha can't wait to see you get to the second symphony, its absurdly different from the first. Not actually recommending it for now though, takes too many listens to start enjoying it, it is by far one of Prokofiev's "harshest" works and he himself said its so complex he could barely understand it.

It has a bit of overall slow pace, but nevertheless very delicate perfomance. It lacks a bit the humorous pov of this piece.

Thank you for reacting to this beauty. I love this piece. Just one little "but". The gaps between the movements are too long. Each part is depending on the previous and needs shorter pause. Nevertheless a superb orchestra and phantasic clear audio quality.

Oof, the choice of tempo in the first movement is a joke. Never heard it so slow before.

It's a little on the slow side for me, but within acceptable range. A quick skim through KZbin finds that it's actually close to the middle of the range of tempi that can be found on KZbin.

Seemed about perfect to me for the Haydn homage. Any faster would have been too Beethovenish.
