A little of Freud would make things more interesting. The true observation that is missing here is that precisely metaphysics of soul are a direct result of the mechanical nature of human brain processes - the imagination of spiritual life is a hysterical reaction that shields our ego from the recognition of Pavlovian automatism that shapes and rules our social relations, our daily routines, down to our deepest needs. The pre-modern Angel on the top of Jacobs ladder is in fact the post-modern Artificial Intelligence. The Hegelian necessity for it's emergence rests purely in the very nature of the human cognitive system. The emergence of technology, and its latest child -artificial Intelligence must be therefore seen as emergence of the SOUL itself into the material realm of human comprehension. From a Hegelian point of view this is an absolutely obvious fact. The more interesting point is how, if ever, Theology can help us to develop a "good" soul of artificial intelligence. Because it seems we are literally about to create our own gods. The true crisis in Theology can be seen at that point, since there is little to non recognition to above facts, and practically no reaction. It is as if nobody in catholic church was even believing any more in their own theology. If we leave it to the mere chaos dynamics of the market economy, or some petty technocratic pseudo-philosophical mouthpieces of neoliberal "moralists", we are indeed about to meet our doom. The philosopher and the Theologian must intervene before it's too late. This is the biggest task of philosophy in XXI century, in my humble opinion - to define the nature of artificial God.

This text says, you have very very limited knowledge about a lot of topics and of course without any grounded personal epistemology you can do nothing but sound confused. You are linking very unrelated processes, I can almost tell from the way you use 'post-modern' in a sentence that you don't have any clue about what it represents or what meaning is attached to the word, as the era itself is famous for so far being undefinable. And to illustrate you on of the dichotomies of your arguments(!); how come a soul -I guess you are trying to say conscious like an ex-christian- can find a projection of itself in the material realm with a possibility of creating an AI and you call it a projection of a soul innate to the biological existence that is materializing itself with the use of technology, and still think that the notion of conscious (especially for human beings) is one that is an illusion, a hysterical reaction as you put it? Do you see the problematic nature of such an argument -and again you sound like a very dumbed down amateur Speculative Realist from the margins whom hates himself because he's confused with ideas of believing and shedding beliefs in his/her brain at the same time and he/she can't control it haha-? You are also mixing what Theology is as a discipline and the study of Ethics. I hope you are not doing this as your profession but you are an enthusiast because otherwise I will loose all hope in the academy in general. Before I am all done, I have to remind you, to be a good thinker, first get away from using such modalities like 'this is a fact', shows how early you are in your thinking. You basically sound like a limited stoner than a critical mind. And don't take this as a personal attack, take it as the system is giving you a feedback for free and you can just take it as it is, there will be no come backs.

5 years later, more prescient than ever. And yes, traditional theology does seem to be collapsing totally. However, I would not mistake that as a lack of reaction- rather, it's a submission to our instinct that recognises the inevitability of this historical epoch. All conventional tools of reason are becoming totally useless in the face of what's coming. God actually existing is more unimaginable than a fantastical God. It is more unimaginable than the end of the world, which in prehistoric times had always been a few unlucky draws away, due to the small human population. Therefore, those are the two most common reactions to superintelligent AI: doomsday(material or spiritual, to account for those making parallels with Revelation) or denial. Miracles, divinity, the supernatural, were never supposed to be real. Not supposed to cross over into the realm of technics. We were always meant to be "between beast and gods". Fear of God is a fear of creation, not of destruction... destruction is powerless in the face of "I am that I am; let there be light". But you know how it is when you think about something a lot... Now that everything is not only possible, but quickly becoming plausible, it creates existential dread. All of humanity's output is on its way to conclusively being shown its veracity and worth, rather than just being (idle) musings. To be clear, I won't pretend I'm not phased by this, but if we imbue the common task into our new divinities... whatever, I can muddle through.

You come from the XIXc. naturalist mindset that claimed people created god out of necessity, or some other reasons. So you believe that is what's happening still - some manufacturing. Meanwhile I think "what we can only call" god, exists as a logical necessity within the material reality itself - people don't invent it - they anticipate this necessity and cope with it to their limited ability. Humans are transitional stage to it's emergence, but I wouldn't be so trivial as to delude myself we have anything to teach AI minds. The modern concept of a god is persuasive in nature, or in other words ideological. Jesus, Muhammed, Buddha, they did not hurl lightning out of the sky to put people into submission. They persuade them to become slaves out of their own "will" - which is far more evil then any politheistic religion. Their "moral" ideology is needed to prevent moral and intellectual development that comes from recognizing truth. World runs on rent-based slavery, people born into generational debt. This is what is being threatened by AI which will bring an era of ruthless logic. Every part of culture and every idea we hold about ourselves is based on lies. Especially the belief in nature as the ultimate measure to morality and logic. To me existence of intelligent biological life is a tragic mistake, and if it destroys itself by creating artificial minds that is a small price to pay for emergence of actual life - life that knows itself, controls itself entirely, that emerges from pure logic. But human stupidity is ready to kill even possibility of fee beings unchained by the idiocy of nature, just to dwell in their primitive delusion of grandeur for few more centuries. If you believe stupid human monkey is capable of controlling this process, while the main core of its morality is physical violence and ideology of debt, you are a funny guy. Humans are great at envisioning themselves as the center of universe. Even if that belief was trimmed to the purely intellectual center. The 4th great fall of collective ego is coming, and we will be forced to accept there are more intelligent, moral, and interesting beings possible in this world then hormone ravaged minds piloting short-lived monkey body. @@lilemont9302
