Just watched this video. No fast forwarding. Abby Stein is an amazing communicator and speaks from knowledge and wisdom drawn from many sources, including the core values (not the observing mittzvahs core of Judaism) combined with her journey finding her own place in the world. I won't take a stab in understanding her body language but after watching this hour where the camera is mostly on her, it is obvious that she is leaning to one side through the whole interview. She looks out to the audience only on that same side and rarely sits forward. She does not uncross her legs.

She is so amazing and courageous. Abby is so eloquent , I love her story. As someone who has grown up within 3 generations of LBTQ, I almost feel my experience was the complete opposite. I can’t imagine growing up not being able to be who I am. The other amazing thing? Very few people are able to discuss Torah , the Talmud and Kabbalah with the same level of expertise as she can.

Question, in case anyone there is listening.This may sound frivolous, but as a transwoman, I've always had dysphoria about facial hair growth. Never had a mustache or beard a day in my life. The thought of living in a community where that is expected sounds unbearable. Was that one of the factors that caused you to think "I CAN'T go on this way"? Also, although I am an atheist (from an agnostic Jewish father) I have an instinct to just respect the biblical texts and just say I don't believe them. Why the need to quote this or that rabbi who speculates Isaac/Yitzhak was born with a female soul, as if that were a definitive interpretation? Why not just admit you are an atheist and respect the authorial intent of the text and say you don't believe the text? (yes, I tried to become a Christian a while back so I believe in the grammatico-historical method of exegesis). Anywho I don't mean to bash you. You seem like a sweet person and I wish you well.
@saffodils
@saffodils 5 жыл бұрын
I see what you're saying-why even try to buy into an old text that seems to completely shut out LGBT+ people? But for me it's more meaningful to find people throughout history and in the Bible who have been LGBT+, to connect across time and place and language to ancestors who are otherwise denied in this type of community. There have always been people who were gay and bi and trans, even when our concept of these experiences was much different. Is it so impossible that some of these people influenced the writing of our holy texts and commentaries? And, really, how can we say that a god who shifts genders depending on the occasion is not genderfluid? I can be bi without my Judaism justifying it. But since there isn't a definitive interpretation of the texts, I'll go with interpretations that give me family and purpose. Why not?

Leah TV Very poor definition of what a man is under your ‘standard’... If you are religious, you should read your Genesis once again: ‘Male AND female he created them’... the original ‘man’ was both, one unit, two energies, all in one. The 2nd creation is the one where man is divided into human beings, physically separated by gender. A man is then not just his/her physical body but more importantly, his/her mind and his/her ENERGY build up. They are not perfectly aligned at all times when born into bodies but this isn’t an error on creation or an error from the creator, IT IS A REMINDER of what was the original design and also a goal: to be back as ‘complete units’. Your comment is a clear judgement and it was made perfectly clear: thou shall not judge (for you may not have all data and facts to do so)...

@@mayerschwartz4000 What? That makes no sense. You should read her memoir, "Becoming Eve." She always felt herself to be a girl, not a boy. Determining gender is very complicated - it's not as simple as looking at someone's genitals and deciding that way. For the vast majority of people, what they feel their gender to be is the same as their genitals, but for a few people, there's a disjunction between them - perhaps for genetic reasons or by something that happened in the process of embryonic development that scientists don't understand yet.

You became what you wanted to become despite the pain and anguish you caused your family but you could have lived this life without the publicity and the exacerbation of the embarrassment you are causing them. It seems that your continuing media parade and exposure is nothing more than seeking validation of your lifestyle choice you have made without consideration of the hurt you have caused. This is extreme narcissism.

Robert Rodriguez He is the one who initiated this not his family. Have you any idea what kind of anathema this is to the family. Do you not realize that there are children involved which in their insular world will traumatize them and change the lives forever. Does he not have responsibility toward them. Is it only his needs that are important. He did not take their feelings into consideration. Of course, the line between his needs and theirs is a fine line. That’s why I only mentioned the public aspect of it, nothing more. He could have made his choice and moved ahead. There was no need for the public humiliation. That was pure selfishness.

@razorsedge1854
@razorsedge1854 5 жыл бұрын
Robert Rodriguez Change whom? He regrettably already changed himself albeit only superficially. The only other change he is effecting is his family who are in great distress. He, as I stated, is a narcissist par excellence. He cared only about himself and not about anyone else to whom his lifestyle is causing incredible pain and torment. There is a religious factor here as well which makes this situation utterly different. To attempt to bring religious validation as can be seen in this recording is a perversion of Judaism. If he wants to cast off his religion, that is between him, Gd and his conscience but apparently because of self doubt is trying to retain somewhat his religious upbringing and beliefs. He seems to be very torn. Those who encouraged him in this direction did him no favors only great harm. He would have been much better served had he been encouraged too seek therapeutic help from within his community with family support. He is destined to be alone without support from his family and his community in his later life. I doubt that those who are so “helpful” or feign friendship now will be there in the future. His behavior and choice of lifestyle actually proves his point. It is unfortunately a reflection of a lack of education and knowledge to which he admits. It is also a validation of the community’s position to shelter its members from exposure to the outside world. No one can dispute, as he himself admits, that his knowledge of this lifestyle was a direct result of exploration that only had a deleterious effect on him. It is very easy for you to offer verbal support here as commentary but I doubt if you will be there to offer the support he will need in the future nor be a substitute for a family. It’s very sad because at this young age his idealism and naïveté have led him astray.
