Beautiful restoration of a classic vintage Gucci tote! I know some people may think that spending approximately $1,000 to repair and restore a handbag is ridiculous and the customer could have just bought a new bag, but I disagree. New leather Gucci totes are $2,000.00+ dollars and they are not currently making this classic style with iconic bamboo handles. Additionally newer designer bags seem to be using lower quality components compared to the beautiful leathers and detailing of older bags. The owner has obviously used the bag for many years and knows that it functions well for their life and style. There might even be a sentimental attachment to memories associated with the bag. It is wonderful to watch you bring back to life something that could have been tossed out in the trash. Thanks for sharing the process with us and reminding me to go condition the leather of my favorite handbags, belts and shoes.🥰

Do those bamboo handles hold up? I worry they wouldn't be as strong as the leather.
@SEFenno4 жыл бұрын
Callie Masters, yes Gucci bamboo handles hold up really well. Much better than leather handles that can show dirt and can thin out over time. Wood handles are less common and not for everyone, but I personally love them.
@eliduttman3154 жыл бұрын
That's the CRITICAL point; the client got better quality than can currently be sourced and spent less too boot. It's very hard to argue with a win/win situation. If your bank balance can stand the "hit", give Steve your work. "You get what you pay for."
@trcs30794 жыл бұрын
@@SEFenno gucci had bamboo handle bags in their 2014 - 2015 season if I'm correct, since I worked as security in one of their stores. Not sure if it was of the same quality as the vintage version though.

Cutting into bags is like breaking the eggs that you need to make an omelette: Yeah, it looks nasty at first, but the end results are more than worth the effort. My best friend's dad was an upholsterer, and I saw him disassemble what to me were beautiful pieces of furniture. When he'd finished, the results were much better than what he'd started with. Everyday I get back to a project, and just stare..what was I doing here. Fixed my 2nd pair of shoes today... My Niece had a almost new Nike's whos top and bottom came apart from each other, making it a kinda weird looking flip flop. But I was there with my shoe glue, glued and pressed them overnight. Now happy Niece. That bag was total class act, worth the repair. Seems like if you knew enough about leather and sewing, you could just make one, sure it would be a Knock Off. But you would only make one, and give it to the women you love. Probably cost alot just for the nice leather. Beyond me.

Beautiful work and a beautiful bag. My first "good" bag was a beautiful but a bit too small Gucci canvas shoulder bag trimmed in leather the color of that bag. It was sort of baguette style with rounded corners on the bottom. I clearly remember when I bought it in the summer of 1986 at the Fifth Avenue Gucci Store in NYC. I paid $165 for it--lol. I should have stocked up--lol. It looked new for years with lots of use. I have wondered what it would be "worth" now but I have never seen another one like it.

Love your attention to detail and quality work. Bag and wallet restoration is something I am often asked to do as a seamstress but I find those asking are unwilling to pay for a true quality job in my area. Too I am often asked to fix fake designer stuff which is NOT made of real leather or those dang coach things that are only leather trimmed. I find some of the things asked of me are not just prohibitively expensive but nearly impossible.
