Let's give my traditional bedroom a modern twist! We are turning a small closet into built-ins, stripping and tiling an antique fireplace, and adding thrifted angular cabinetry for style and storage!

I am a BIG fan of mixing classic elements with modernist details. But my mind's eye always appreciates a more eclectic style anyway. One of my faves is mixing Victorian or Italianate plaster mouldings with modern lighting...or in your case that awesome propellor ceiling fan! Love it! My vote on the shelving/back panel depth would rely on available lighting inside the finished unit. It may ultimately come down to a form vs function decision. (I'm anxious to see the completed fireplace surround. Your adaptive re-use of materials is admirable. They don't call it 'upscaling' for nothing!) Cheers Andrew 😉

The ceiling fan is stunning. Will you be putting a spacer between the wall and new cabinet by fireplace? From the angle we could see, it didn’t look like the door would open fully. It could have just been the angle of video. Can hardly wait to see the end result. I love that you are showing how a magazine worthy home can be cultivated over time and on a budget. The way you repurpose items is just genius.

I would do tempered glass shelving in the closet. They're not too expensive to have custom cut at a glassier shop. Make the shelves adjustable so you can change your displays at will. Have a puck light installed at the top of the cabinet ceiling. The light will filter down through the shelves and illuminate your displays. Also think about adding an electrical outlet within the cabinet in case you need to plug in a lamp or something. Personally, I would've added on a few inches to the fireplace chase wall so that the mantle fits without sticking out on that side. This could address and fix the problem of the chase not being level. Of course, you wouldn't have room then for your angular cabinet. But that wall might be "too busy" with all three elements scrunched together. You can always set those cabinets elsewhere in the room. I'm not usually a fan of ceiling fans, but the one you chose adds a sculptural, modern touch to your room. I'm glad to see you're getting some swag! Looking forward to seeing the completed room.

Hey there! Thanks for your input! Totally hear ya on the glass shelves… just not personally a fan of glass in built ins. We are definitely adding an outlet in there since there was already a cut out in the thrifted entertainment unit. You are spot on that it will be great to have in that area. And yes, the original plan was to extend the wall to go behind the full mantle. However, I’m hoping that the cabinetry and diagonal panel will work - so that we don’t have to do any drywall or plaster work. We got REALLY burnt out on that after the kitchen, bathroom, and atrium 😂😭 I agree that it might feel like too much… which is why I’m being mindful of editing down and eliminating unnecessary extras. But I’m just hoping it works out 🤞🏻

I am thinking during the vid, "don't get that fan in black!". I thought the ceiling was white. GREAT call. I think things like a fan, tv's, or exhaust fans should not stand out in a room. You could still see the fan but it is not so visually loud that it dominates the room. Wow you have a lot of talent and imagination, your vids are a pleasure to watch. Thanks, I know that filming and editing are a lot of boring work.

Hello! All of your design decisions are so well thought out and things are coming together. Your mom and dad are real troopers. I converted a bedroom off my kitchen into a dining room and the closet was turned into an area that has a sideboard cabinet. The upper shelf of the closet was left in place for storage of less used tableware. I love how it all looks like a beautiful built-in unit. I also put an outlet on the back wall for a lamp. I liked the music you used when stripping the paint from the fireplace.

Get a pair of fence pliers, $23 at Lowes, for pulling the nails out of the back of the molding! I just finished replacing the moldings in a room of my 110+ year old house and they were great for pulling the nails out the back!!

Those side panels on the fireplace are a puzzle aren't they? I'd bet someone f'dup on the fireplace install, and the owner of the place just tired of yet one more delay tiredly said, just hide it with a false wall and we'll deal with it later. As for historic . . . you living in a home? or a museum? From what I can see you are being very sympathetic to the original construction, not like you are pushing out entire walls with no roofs like Delia Deetz did to the Maitland house in Beetlejuice . . . That ceiling fan is GORGEUOUS! like a piece of sculpture with those curves. I'd paint the cabinet the same colour as the trim, and I'd put the shelves almost flush with the front, like set back an inch, just to leave a bit of a reveal. BTW? that tile choice for the fireplace is stunning!

I like the idea of bringing the shelves out to the front of the cabinet (making the upper shelf area shallower). That should make the entire unit look more intentional, and possibly original. I struggled with the issue of modern vs. historic when I was renovating my 1885 row house, too. I made my selections around a couple of values decisions. 1) was the new, or modern, change going to improve something that was functionally obsolete?, or 2) was the new addition of sufficiently high quality that it matched the original materials in character?

3:00 Correct most old homes had no closets. Relying on wardrobes, and chifferobes used for clothing and usually a top mirrored door. Used to store hats when they were in vogue. Like your converted one, there’s absolutely no space. Later on some closets were built out into the room.

It’s funny… because we think of closet space as such a modern necessity when in fact so many closets are not set up well to be useful. So the old method of wardrobes and such can work much better! I’m definitely searching for an amazing vintage wardrobe for my guest room 🙌🏻

@@REISSUED I have my maternal Grandma’s cross cut oak, and it’s made a lot of moves with me. The first house I grew up in had no closets. My Dad built a walk-in one in our bathroom way before I was born. Then a cedar lined one from the excess wasted space above the upstairs. Our bedroom had a huge waterfall wardrobe with round celluloid or Bakelite handles. Since he added on to the upstairs long before I was born, it couldn’t be moved with us. He, later built a long MCM living room which also had a cedar lined closet. I believe there were two picture windows front and back. Two additional small windows on the furthest wall from the entrance. Something I don’t like is when families add on another room. Instead of covering a window opening, they close off the back. Then use that as shelves, for knickknacks, bad Feng Shui. Stagnates the flow of energy it once had.

i think you're striking a good balance between keeping historic, original features (that were built correctly and are in good condition) and adding function that works for your current life. that ceiling fan is so interesting. it looks like the blades of a blender. i just image it chopping people's heads off (it won't of course but that's what i picture lol) lastly, i like the questions you posit in every video, makes it more philosophical :)

I loved the blue glass pebbles on the fireplace. Now you ruined it. All due to you not having any style taste at all. Duh. 😶 (Kidding. In case that wasn't obvious.. Guess the algorithm won't get it and will put me all down to the bottom. Well..) I volunteer as your personal stripper coach: When only those little rests remain in the crevices of the wood, I recommend using a brush instead of the spatula. Not too hard/rough (no metal brush) but not too soft either. And for covering the stripper "airtight" try to put the foil directly onto the stripper paste and not leave air gaps/bubbles. For the colour of the cabinet you could go with the blue tone of the tiles maybe. But trim colour might even be better. Hard to say from here. 😅 The shelves should be deep, I think, not shallow! But round off with the front wall, not overlap it, if that makes sense. (I'm not native, so sometimes Idk exactly how to put things. 😅)

Absolutely agree! The ReStore will no longer pick up donated TV units… And most of the ones people bring us stay in the store forever and end up selling for $5-10. But when they are constructed well, they can be great for cheap materials!

The fireplace bricks scare me, because they look so fragile. I, too, have an ULC, but I left it the way it was-it is in my small spare rm. I also live in an older home, which can be a nightmare. I only do what is needed to 'take care of it.' Since I have living here, I have left things as is, because I don't have any help in doing anything over or a complete renovation, but a las, it works.. I always hate when I come to the end of your videos. I think you have the most interesting and imaginative ideas. Personally, I would bring the entertainment center forward. I know someone who had a shelving unit made with shelves so deep, the objects displayed got really lost in the black hole! Frequently, the older houses that still exist survived because they were well made. It doesn't mean that there weren't any badly built houses. When you think about modern zoning and building codes; they were developed for a reason. To prevent the issues, including health problems and deaths, caused by cheaply and incorrectly constructed buildings. I'm a big fan of building codes.

Hey Andrew. I've been enjoying your channel. I thought I remembered you saying your house was from the 30s? Anyway, your house is classic late victorian or Edwardian (King Edward's time) or about 1890-1920 or so. Right?

Love watching the more realistic timeframe videos of a home renovation. We bought a 1950s-era home almost a year ago, and almost nearly have a finished kitchen after a year of a diy-renovation (all while working full time). It's so true that these projects always take longer than you think, especially with an older home! I struggle with the historic vs. modern topic as well... I adore the midcentury modern aesthetic, but our '50s home was definitely "builder grade," so I struggle with some aspects of our house, like our original cork-tiled bedroom. Thanks for keeping it real. I think I would paint the ULC cabinet the light trim color. Still, I am worried that the darkness of the wood entertainment center contrasted with trim-colored shelving would create a "floating feeling" that would take away from the cool architectural moment of the modern, built-in shelf-things. You clearly have a strong sense of design, however; I think you should trust your intuition and go for whatever you think is best!

Ooh your house sounds super cool! And cork tile could be amazing! What’s your reservation there? (I ask as someone who has not seen it… maybe it’s just really ugly 😂). I think you might have won me over on the shelving color. I have a lot of references of natural wood shelves in a painted cabinet (which looks amazing) but none that I like of painted shelves in a wood cabinet. I’m gonna see if I can source some natural wood to match the cabinet interior. Thanks for the input!

​@@REISSUED The cork tile is cool! ...But it's damaged, with chunks missing in certain areas. I had first thought it was a weird, quirky floor choice installed after the house was built, not knowing any better. So our original plan (of replacing our old carpets and the cork tile completely with hardwood floors) suddenly became more complicated when I realized they were original to the house and quite common in houses of the period. So now it's a question of, do we try and restore the cork tile (and all of the inevitable complications that will come along with it) or stick to the original plan of hardwood throughout? When do you honor the original bones of the house vs. doing something new?

Oh my gosh that fireplace! What a cool feature! I'm jealous, the fireplace had been long removed when we bought our 1914 renovation project in 2016. We ended up taking down the chimney, because there was no point in having it without a fireplace. We built a couple of outdoor patio areas with the bricks. Reuse, recycle!

I love the question “is it valuable just because it’s old?” I think a lot of people get sad to see old fireplaces/cabinets/floors etc get covered up or reno’d out because in those floors and fireplaces, we usually get glimpses of true craftsmanship, and we just want to honor it and to not forget it. Today, developers mass produce 6 different floor plans and repeat them 35 times in any given neighborhood, and it’s not really about being the best at the craft, it’s just about being the most efficient. Maybe I’m just romanticizing hand-made items, but there’s something about historic architecture and craftsmanship that just demands respect! It makes the people of the past so much more real. And I guess there are those of us who feel sad to not keep those things, almost like we are losing a connection to those people who paved the way for us today if we don’t. BUT if you are going to restore something with care and quality work, in place of something that’s just “old,” then in a hundred years, hopefully someone will be saying “this tile seems like it was probably made somewhere in the 2020s, and I just really want to keep that historic vibe since it’s in such good condition.” 😂❤

Because of all the openings in the bedroom I would suggest putting a faux wall in front of the fireplace (Sheetrock, shiplap, etc.). Then move the bed to where the fireplace wall is now covered up.

Quick tip: put a putty knife under the pry bar or hammer where it’s going to press into the wall. You won’t have the dimple spots. I’m new here, and I’m enjoying your channel.

One last comment from "know it all". Andrew IDEALLY when you strip down to bare metal, you should use a thing called "bare metal primer". (mainly for rust) I painted my bare aluminum handrail black and couldn't find the can I bought. So used the same paint as your in matte black. Neither the downrod or the fireplace are going to see much wear, so fingers crossed my paint will still be sticking to my handrail. IF you are going to use that fireplace, use the high temp paint, it has a black outdoor grill on the can. I like that fan and it is a deliberate contrast, so I think it is fine.

Love your videos! I just wanted to comment about the bedroom makeover plans... I love the angular shelves, but I was thinking that painting them in the dark ceiling color rather than the cream might help accentuate them. As for opening the closet to join the two rooms, I wouldn't do that! Maybe wall it off for storage in the other room? :-)

So, I am concerned about the safety of the fireplace. If it is intended for use, please have it inspected if you already have not. Having said that, I DO love fireplaces especially older ones with character like yours. I am sure you are making all the best design decisions, but I might have sacrificed the fireplace and the closet completely which would have privided have a solid wall for a natural placement of the bed. But however you finish it I am sure it's gonna look great.

We have renovated eight homes, only one was very old (it's something to tackle when young!) We tried to save or reuse old features, but if we wouldn't use it and didn't like it had to go. Fern Cligget spinster (that was literally listed as original owner) no longer ran a boarding house there and I did not need a potato bin that holds 50 pounds of potatoes. I did keep the brass numbers on the bedrooms though because they were cool. You are doing a great job, it's hard work.

because the fireplace is so prominent in the room.... especially since you will be bringing back the dark wood tone and dark modern tile .. It should not fight the new closet 2 feet away for dominating that short wall . I would keep the new closet /shelf opening the same color as the walls .... making it less "another feature" and more simply architectural . Let it blend into the walls ... keep in mind that dark colors as well as Bright colors draw attention . If you have too much dark wood and browns on one wall and the remainder of the room is painted light . The room will be heavy sided . keep the room colors including the furnishings down to 3 colors . rich browns to soft coco tones to match your mantle and your lite wall color tone range . The 3rd color is the PoP color , The Kicker to use very sparingly like him a couple of pillow shams, and perhaps a vase in the new closet shelving along with may be a rug, but no more.

Definitely let the fireplace be the star of that wall. Not sure if your logistics of the built in your doing but I think let shelves be shallower than cabinet. Hard to style well when they are too deep. I have that situation and I hate it! It just seems like dark jokes behind stuff. And I’m always pulling stuff forward - so I guess it depends on what you want to put on there also gives a landing spot for a lamp of some kind if the shelves don’t come out as far. Wise to put an outlet there too! I’m sure it’s gonna come together!

All the hard work it paying off and how good did it feel putting the heat gun on that paint and watching it melt away to expose that gorgeous timber!! Shelves back . I think if the cabinet at the bottom is dark, the fireplace will be competing with it since they’re so close. So go with same as trim.

I think everything looks amazing, and your plans are on point. I think the trim color for the built in is a good idea. At first I was thinking that having the shelves set back made more sense, because you want the walnut entertainment cabinet wood to show? But then I thought that having more shallow shelves if you are using it for books and stuff, would be better. So, I am torn as well. I guess it depends on what you will use them for.
