Barkov deserved it the most, easily and inarguably the best player in the finals. He isn’t an offensive only player, he didn’t let the guy that won the conn smythe get a point when on the ice with him, excluding an assist in game 4. McDavid was completely mute in the last 2 games and a ghost in games 1-3. The conn smythe isn’t for who gets a stat record, but who’s the best player. You cannot make any case that McDavid was better than Barkov when Barkov shut McDavid down and had the same offensive impact.

@@JC-vy1bo yeah but the most important series is the finals. If we go off the whole playoffs, the Oilers played two hurt teams and the Kings anyway, the Panthers played Tampa, Boston and the Rangers. I understand why Conor won it, and I’m not mad that he won it. But it is a shame that Barkov, who really was better, didn’t get it. @@eirikrdberg1161 I am sure you are a Panther's fan. Barkov played incredibly well, especially in the earlier series. The Conn Smythe is voted on at the end of the second period by 8-10 sports writers so it is not up to Bettman but I am not a fan of his either. Bobrovosky was also incredible and took a lot of heat for actually playing very well when the Panther's loss. I saw only one weak goal. Without him the Panthers would never gotten close to the finals last year and he made a huge difference in many games this year. If you also watched Edmonton in earlier rounds you would perhaps had more appreciation for his incredible run. It turns out he was on the losing team. He had two golden opportunities to tie the game - I suspect he was exhausted but of course if he had put in a tying goal then there would be no doubt due to his dominant play in the first 5 games (even though he didn't score in all of them he was huge both defensively and offensively - it is just when he has back to back 4 point games facing elimination people see this alone and downplay his defensive work and all the set ups that players missed and so on). Here in Finland Barkov is now a hero along with the other Finns. It would have been a shame for the Panthers to be known as team choke after playing so strong for so long - especially in front of their own fans. SO a good result in the end.
@donfraser64653 күн бұрын
Barkov is a great player and of course the Finns are rightfully proud. Great two way player. "did nothing" is a bit of an blind eye to all the offense and scoring opportunities McDavid generated. When you have these match ups fans often forget that the "shutdown" goes two ways and that it is not so much the one on one match up that shuts down the other player. I am assuming you have played hockey and know that shutting down another player is not that hard (covering your man is a lower skill that many unskilled players can do and why they are often assigned such a task). It is often a waste of higher skilled players talent. Barkov did a great job but his linemates were huge and equally responsible. McDavid was free and roving around (got away from Barkov dozens of times) but who was open and who else left their check to step up at the right time is important. The key is to have 5 players shutdown another line. McDavid only had 8 or so points but not due the shutdown alone - Bobrovsky was incredible and better than average even in the games he was criticized in. The real question is whether Finland will get a chance to put their best players together for best on best soon. There has not been an opportunity for that since 2014 due to no NHL Olympics and no World Cup. Many great Finnish players (and far too many goalies) to choose from. Looking forward to it and Barkov leading the way.

As a Panther fan mostly watching the ESPN/ABC broadcast, I think the reason some are sounding salty are for the reason that from game 4 on, and I would have to look back at Games 1-3, the main TV broadcast was constantly and I mean CONSTANTLY talking about McDavid. Even down 3-0, the conversation was about McDavid. Which to an extent I get, but by the time we got to Game 7, ESPN felt like an Oilers home broadcast. I was outside watching the broadcast with other Panther fans, and this sentiment was HEAVILY spoken about. I know McDavid is the "Face of the NHL". Greatest player in the league, etc. Not all fans know this regardless of location, how long they've been watching, new fans, old fans, didn't matter. I myself understood why, but I can admit it got to a point where I was like good lord, just give the guy a handy on live tv. I have nothing but respect for McDavid. I believe he will get a cup. Also, most fans thought the Smythe would go to Barky. Bob was out of the running, but Barky was a close #2. I can talk more about it, but at the end of the day, Panthers got the Cup. I am happy. I am beyond joyful. But I've seen good fans and bad fans on both sides. I saw Oiler fans walking up to Panther fans and shaking hands, mine included. I also saw Oiler fans angry trying to start fights with Panther fans who lacked class. I will not defend those fans.

@PaulGuy19542 күн бұрын
Panthers fan here and I agree. I thought it was a mistake sending out McDavid and Draisaitl every other shift. For one it clearly used all their reserves to the point that in the last couple of shifts they could barely lift their sticks. And it also ignored the fact that the Oilers in the playoffs really found themselves and were getting scoring from the bottom six. They became a deep team which was supposed to have been Florida’s strength. So in effect the guys who contributed a lot of their scoring in the finals were kept off the ice. Rookie mistake by Knoblauch. Great final, both teams left it all on the ice. Congrats and thanks to all the participants.

I hardly call the boos class-less. If we accept that as is, then McDavid also not being present for the award is also class-less. Neither of them are, so it is a moot point, both the fans and players are passionate, and it is only good for the game that has become evolved into its current state. Lot of people on copium in the comments, the Panthers played a smothering-forechecking game that shuts down the main playmakers. It was not luck for filthy play that brought them to the cup, it was an effective, strategic approach even if it wasn't that sexy to watch. In a way, the fact that no Panther stood out from the rest when Conn Smythe considerations are taken into account is a direct representation into the system they played under POMO and their team chemistry.

Bettman 31 Canada ZERO. He has been preventing Canada from winning since 94. NOT a "conspiracy" . No one can convince me that in 31 years no Canadian team was "good enough to win" and more suspiciously no 2 Canadian teams were good enough to meet in the finals. The first thing he did was prevent Vancouver from winning in 94 (after he moved the NHL head office from Toronto to New York). He has been doing it ever since - allowing a team to periodically go to the finals and even game 7 but always prevents the Canadian team from winning. He does this with the "help" of the referees who are told to call extra penalties against Canada and less against the other team. In game 7 of this year within 3 minutes of the start a bogus call against the Oilers which gave Florida a goal. If the Oilers would have scored more there would have been more penalties called against them and fewer against Florida. People saying the Oilers were not "aggressive enough" are wrong because if they were the refs would have called even more penalties against them. A no win situation. He is all about helping the American teams thrive and will do everything to ensure the cup stays in America. He is salivating at the eventual move of McDavid, Draisaitl, Matthews and others to US teams because they will know they can never win a cup playing for a Canadian team. Now that he has promised the owner in Phoenix that they will have another team it should work out that at least one of those players I mentioned will end up signing there which would instantly help that Phoenix team. So corrupt. He hates the Canadian teams but loves their money and stretching out the series to game 7 brought him millions more. It is especially sad that the two most expensive season tickets are in Edmonton and Toronto but neither of which will ever win again. Edmonton is lucky that he took over in 94 instead of 84 because if he did the Oilers would never have won even 1 cup. "Captain America" - Gary Bettman.

For Edmonton to complain about Florida tying up the puck against the boards for the final seconds its time for a real good reality check. Take a look at what Bobby Orr did in numerous games. My opinion about McDavid is when you did not even come out and even touch that trophy it was a slap in the face to hockey. It was insulting. My advice is this,,, grow up,, be a man and move on. The Benn and the stars depth. Then Barkov is is the single best shutdown guy. Yet McDavid found a way. He had 11 points in the final series. That is crazy. Panthers were the better team and played like it was there last game ever. The Oilers played like game 1 and 2. Tentative afraid to make mistakes which they simply cannot due against a great team like flordia. Barkov is amazing. Bob wad fantastic but McDavid holds most assist is any Era. First player to ever get back to back 4 point games in a final. He was the conn Smythe winner. @@SDGhoster All those points came in two games. Edmonton played in Game 7 like they did through the whole series. Florida took their foot off the gas in Games 4 and 5. Game 6 was the only real win Edmonton got in the series with Florida playing at full throttle (and McDavid had 0 points). The Oilers knew they were cooked before the puck dropped for Game 7. They had no answers for Florida when the Panthers played their game.
@SDGhoster2 күн бұрын
@ABC-sc2ip two things, McDavid had 1 point on the only goal I game 2. Game 3 he had 2 points, then 4 and 4. So yeah he didn't have points in all the games but having 11 points in 4 games is impressive no matter what to do that in a SCF is doubly so only 13 players have ever recorded 11 or more points in a SCF. Saying Flordia took their foot off the gas says you have never played in a highly competitive league. Game 4 flordia knew they had a chance to win it, and the nerves got to them. Game 5 was the best game of the series. Flordia was within a goal of tying it, and then who knows how it finishes. Game 6 Oilets dictated the play for most of the game. Game 7 was a great game, and flordia deserves the cup. However, after the Oilers tie it up is remember the Oilers almost get the go-ahead after Bouchard (off a pass from Mcdavid) beats Bob but not the post. That would have changed the flow of the game because flordia would be chasing. But Flordia won. I think they truly deserve it they were a great team. My whole point was that McDavid deserved it over the other possibilities.
