Those who only know their disco era music are missing out on 90% of their music catalog. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some late 70s Bee Gees-it was the first of their music I was introduced to and it’s what made me a fan. But what has kept me a fan is their ability to reinvent themselves without losing what made it special in the first place, and that, in my opinion-is their beautiful harmonies and melodies. Nobody does it better.

@@eh-i1841 you're right, they were never ordinary. I suppose I meant that you could meet these guys on the street and they would stop and talk to you with no airs and graces. They were extraordinary songwriters, singers and performers but always had time for their fans. There's a video of them in a market place in a town here in the U.K. busking, part of a tv program. Dressed in jeans and t-shirts they stood together like they usually did and sang a medley of their songs. Just like any other ordinary buskers. It was all for fun and they did make a few quid which went to charity. Even in all their fame and fortune they had time to sing for the public without a fee. I recognized this video as soon as you brought it up. A lucky person got those flowers up on stage. Robin gently puts his down, and precious Mo acts spontaneously and keeps them with him, tucked into his coat. Did you love the look on Barry's face when she went by? I love this song. Now that is some perfect unison, really perfect. It just makes the outstanding harmony even more wonderful to hear. They are all in such strong voice, and this magnificent song gets me every time. It bears repeating. There is nothing wrong with disco. It was great music and very fun for dancing and moving, but they have done SO much more. You are right they constantly evolved and stayed true to their craft. Robin characterized this song as a mixture of British type folk, soul and rock. Oh, and Robin wrote in the notes for Tales from the Brothers Gibb, that the song is not autobiographical, it is about two lovers from different backgrounds, who because of peer pressure, have to escape. No matter what story they wanted to tell, it is extraordinary. "One" is magic.

Have you had a chance to see the interview which follows on the heels of this performance? Robin gets quite perturbed when some reporter in the audience questions them about the meaning of this song!😉
@janicetrimmell68972 жыл бұрын
@@gloriamaryhaywood2217 Yes, I think I know the one you are talking about. The interviewer says something like "reviewers are saying what in the world do the Bee Gees know about ordinary lives? That starts it out. First Barry gets a little huffy about reviewers in general and Robin really gets animated about how the song is not autobiographical, and how all songwriters don't HAVE to be writing about themselves if they are good songwriters. Barry is still a little huffy, and pipes in that even if people wanted to make the song about them, their lives WERE ordinary not ARE ordinary. But even so, they quickly pivot to their wonderful, polite selves and are so open to giving thoughtful answers.
@gloriamaryhaywood22172 жыл бұрын
@@janicetrimmell6897 😉 Yep. That's the interview alright! Robin still has his frigging flowers with him and he gets annoyed cause he's trying to chunk them down on that table in front of them, but those flowers have a secret revenge of their own, as they keep clinging to his clothing!!😜 Somebody had said that Barry probably told Robin to pick those flowers up off the floor and carry them to the interview, as Robin was usually oblivious to stuff like that!Lol. Once Robin was triggered it was hard to shut him down, even though Barry tried to diffuse that loaded question about Ordinary Lives. Robin was indeed getting bent out of shape! Did you notice the way he tossed his shoulders and head while throwing a look of disdain!? 😂 I gotta say that I just love Robin, love him to Bits!! I first heard this song when I bought and watched the DVD of their 1989 Melbourne concert. The opening was amazing: all three had their backs to the audience, there was some mysterious synthesizer music, and fog was rising all around them. It was as if the gods had landed. Then, as musical director, Maurice raised his arm and sharply cut it down to signal the start of the music. A dramatic, magical moment. Then, starting with Maurice, each turned towards the audience and began playing their parts, either instruments or vocals, or both. The song itself has become one of my favorites. It really moves me.
