were I put the sugar to feed my bees over the winter?
@mannlake2 ай бұрын
If you are in a Northern climate, we recommend placing sugar or ProWinter feed directly on top of the frames.

Would it also be good to use some insulation under the top lid?

Yes, you can insulate as well.

I can wash the wool to remove lanolin. Should i put wool in a pillow case or just loose?
@debbielewison74864 ай бұрын
Thank you, i was wondering about the lanolin also.
@mannlake3 ай бұрын
We do not recommend the use of wool, but if you are able to remove the lanolin, it may work to absorb moisture. As we have not tested this method, we do not have a recommendation on how to use it.

Would wool work in the quilt box?
@mannlake4 ай бұрын
Processed wool would be an excellent choice if you have it readily available. However, if you’re purchasing it solely for this purpose, it might not be the most economical option. Keep in mind that raw wool contains lanolin, a natural oil, which means it won’t control moisture as effectively as wood chips or burlap would.

How many frames of honey should be in the top deep? Just about full?
@mannlake4 ай бұрын
If you are further north, having the top box nearly full of stores will be ideal. The exact amount really depends on your region.

Question.. I noticed after all the videos I've seen that you had your hive off the ground. I'm in Michigan so is that beneficial for keeping the mice away or just staying off the cold ground. I'm 61 now and alone so I really want to start something I'd like but I do NOT want to kill a single bee.

Keeping your hive elevated helps to protect from pests and will increase the longevity of your bottom board. Setting your hive directly on the ground will allow moisture to be absorbed by your bottom and it will not last as long. It also puts your hive at a better working height.
