Everyone gave a crap on how forced the last movie is, but I think its great... The only reason naruto didnt get her because he didnt know those feelings, he's a teenager and every boy at that time likes different people. But the moment naruto saw the memories of hinata, then he understood. I mean, naruto thought that Iruka sensei was the first person to ever acknowledge him, so naruto felt the actual love for his sensei as a father figure, but knowing that hinata is in fact the first person to ever understand and like him, naruto felt bad and realized his true feelings..

There are hints he has strong feelings for her throughout the series (if someone else gets hurt he gets mad but if Hinata gets hurt he loses his mind, etc) but because he never experienced love as a kid he doesn't really get that's what he is feeling. And therefore doesn't know how to act on it properly. Or, y'know, at all. (I thought I had put this in my original post but apparently that train of thought never left the station in my brain.
