Hm, interesting. And they do look like elephants legs! Also, the rain in the forest is so atmospheric. I was walking yesterday through a small forest and noticed the leaves on few trees looked like spider webs, they were almost transparent, just the vines and shape of the leaves were left. I wonder if that is some sort of disease too, it must be, although the bark seemed all right. Often when I walk through the forest now I think, 'Akiva would know what tree that is and he would tell many things about it'. Thank you for sharing!💛

Interesting how they stump sprout like their distant cousins the chestnuts. I didn’t realize the disease had been around for decades. Now there’s another threat, beech leaf disease which is just showing up in the northeast. I hope that won’t be the nail in the coffin for this species.

I understand that it is advisable to be very careful and/or not transport infected wood for use as firewood due to the chance of spreading the disease, correct?

Thanks for the video, I haven't noticed any beeches with this disease in my region in the Midwest. Would you ever grow beeches from seed? In my experience it seems like the best patches of wild leeks are found in hardwood forests where beech is a big component.

Great video. I've noticed Lion's Mane tend to grow on Beech. I cloned 4 local specimes of lions mane last fall and am doing an experiment right now where we are inoculating standing, fallen, and felled diseased beech at various stages of disease as an attempt at huge flushes of mushrooms. What are your thoughts on the effect on mast production in these forest types?

I wish you would show us how to shell and dry or cure black walnuts. I have a bunch of black walnut trees by me and if I'm not too late I want to get some nut, i love these nuts but I don't know how to clean and cure or dry them. I'm not very healthy or strong anymore and I don't want to gather up a bunch of black walnuts and let them go bad because I don't know how to get them ready to eat. I know you can't just pick them and eat them. I think they'll take a month or more to cure after I manage to get the hull cleaned off of them. I don't know how to get all that hull off and get them cleaned up and laid out to dry somewhere. Please let me know if you have a chance to do a video on this. Thank you so much. I appreciate your video's.

My father would dry them in our driveway. He'd drive on them to get the outer coating mashed up. After awhile my brother and I would break into them. Mom would make chocolate chip cookies with black walnuts.

Does anybody graft european beech onto american beech?
