I ran the food cost based on one of the most expensive grocery chains in Oregon a week before publication date. The food cost would obviously be much less if you used game meat or garden veg in your recipe.

I was a Managing Chef most of my working life.
I picked this recipe up when I managed a pub while the Chef was recovering from a bypass.
We made everything from scratch but this recipe is designed to be made in advance and frozen or cooked to order. This is what may be called a Master Recipe. The filling and gravy can be altered to meet a wide variety of dietary needs and cultural tastes.
Pie:
1 Deep dish pie shell
1 Sheet Puff Pastry
1lb. Ground Beef
1 can Peas
1/2 onion
1/3 C Flour
16 ounces beef stock
1 egg for egg wash
Brown ground beef and onion
Add flour, mix, and cook for 4-5 minutes
Add Peas and lightly stir
Add beef broth to de-glaze pan and create sauce.
Lightly stir to prevent damaging the peas.
Cover and remove from heat to rest and cool slightly.
Fill shell and cover with puff pastry top.
Seal with egg wash and trim excess from edges and use to make a pinwheel design on the top.
Egg wash the top and make a few steam slits in the top
Bake 350 degrees for 45 minutes
Gravy
1/2 c Butter
1/2 onion minced
1/2 c Flour
16 ounces beef stock
Melt butter and add onions
Fry onions over medium heat until browned
Add flour to start the roux.
Cook 2-3 minutes
Add stock and stir gently as gravy thickens.
salt and pepper to taste.
Allow the pie to rest for 10 minutes before cutting or cool and reheat.
Serve with steak fries (Chips) and a vegetable
Gravy is traditionally applied to the pie and the chips.
Leftovers can be cooled portioned and frozen for up to 6 months.
This is a relatively easy recipe that just about anyone can make.
The whole meal can be made in under 2 hours and for less than $2 a serving.
This is an extremely versatile recipe.
