Because of the side wave (off the jetty), the Wedge tends to be 2-3X the size of any place else on the coast during the South swell. If there is a hurricane off Baha, the Wedge will be breaking 3-4 days later.

Some amazing slams n dunks, raised in Balboa near the Wedge back in the longboard times, so board surfing shore break at the wedge was always a sketchy self inflicted idea, it was pretty much the domain of body surfers, Short boards made it possible to surf the wedge without breaking the board or yourself over and over again,. We used these small oval shaped cocktail waitress service trays with a 1" lip as hand held boogie boards, gave you the extra enertia like having a rudder or fins to cut out quickly from bad situations & the tray doubled as a skim board for sand surfing the waters edge, great memories, The blond guy surfing the inside break's blowback from hitting the jetty creating some great rides between the onshore slam & washing machine like convergence of waves,

Used to live down there, and bodyboard and Boogie board those waves. Maybe I'm a chicken but I would not go in when the shore break was that big. Had a high school classmate break his neck there, but luckily he got back the use of his arms and legs after years of therapy. That's when I decided it wasn't worth it, but I salute the daredevils who do challenge those waves.
