Well done, I'll be using a lot of your designs for my hives here in Montana. Thanks for posting this.

Hello from the Northwest Washington I love the hive I want to build langstroth long hives out of 2-in thick insulated paneling and I was looking at different ways of trying to do it thought yours was pretty cool we have some pretty cold and odd winners a cold warm but really good insulated boxes seems like the way to go

Nice job. I'm doing some research on insulating my hives year around. I didn't understand the details on the inside of the box. Do the frames rest on the insulation? Do the boxes connect to one another or are they just sitting flush like a normal langstroth? I would love to see a follow up video.

Hi, Sorry I did not reply earlier. The insulation is encased in wood. I used cut down 2x4's to frame in the insulation top and bottom, outside covered with plywood.. The framework is attached to a regular box. The foundation frames sit on the original lips on the Langstroth box. I offset the insulation framework so the original box is down half inch on top and bottom to make them insert one onto the other. This was done because of our high wind here. Most likely does not contribute to the insulation, as the bees will seal that anyhow. Should be fine to stack in traditional Langstroth manner if that works for you. Hive is together with a colony. Can't take them apart now for show. Possibly in the Spring.

Nice build. I am wondering why you made it 8 frames instead of 10. With 10 you have more space for a frame feeder or top feeder like ceracell, which are better in cool weather. What did you do for a cover?

The weight was the main reason.

How was you first season with this hive?

Has done very well, we still have the first colony we installed in it(almost three years ago). It is the longest we have been able to keep same colony so far. Living in "Windy Wyoming", bees can be a struggle. Especially in the foothills where we live. We lost one hive to a wind gust of 90 mph. We have severe wind chill here in winter also.

also look into a feed shim, for either fondant or mt camp, those biardman feeders can induce robbing at times,i use rapid round internal feeders,...or hive alive fondant, right over the brood, you can inspect without chilling brood in winter,i build some of my own stuff ,so i appreciate guys who make their own,i use my dads old tablesaw,to make rabbeted boxes,
