Proud of y’all and your commitment to the bees. My dad past away a few years ago. He was the president of the counties bee association and he maintained 25 hives. You have the same passion about your bees that he did. Love from NC

Hey Girl, Jay is the president of our bee keeping group, Bee Friends. He is one of the most knowledgeable people I know and our group is extremely helpful. Thanks for the video and I sure am glad that your hives escaped this plague. Look forward to seeing you again soon. Ambria says hi! Vivian Ann on the side of the mountain in northeast Tennessee

Good video. Happy to hear your apiary escaped the dreaded foulbrood. If they survive the winter well and stay healthy next year maybe you'll be able to experience the reward of some honey. Great channel.

Goodness, when you said the only cure was to light it on fire, my heart sunk. I can't even imagine having to light a hive on fire. I pray that blessings come to the one that had to sacrifice and blessings to all the ones that made it through unharmed. Thank you for sharin', I'm so very happy your girls are okay. :)

Oh, thank goodness that your hives are safe. We are very new to beekeeping also. We just started our hives in May. In Alabama, where are in very far North Central we are also required to register our hives. Our State Inspector told our association about the outbreak of 4 cases in TN. He gave a class about American Foulbrood last month. We are older and don't have all that you juggle. Just 3 goat does, 3 dogs, 1 cat , our bees and grandchildren. I appreciate your informative videos. If you could make it our Limestone County Association is putting on a very good all day Bee Symposium on August 18 in Athens, AL. Many very educated speakers will be presenting .

Our apiary is registered as well but I think it's encouraged here in Pa not required. We are fortunate that there has never been a case of American Foulbrood here.

Hi Patara, D and I were taught that the less “extra space” there is, the easier it would be for the bees to defend the hive. We only had hive beetles the first yr. we are in 3rd yr now. It is sometimes tricky riding that line between what is to much space. ✌🏻❤️

We went through something similar only with our chickens about 3 years ago when the bird flu outbreak happened. Awful feeling with people with hazmat suits show up to test your chickens (layers and meat birds), thank God they didn't take my birds.

you are teaching us bee lingo, even if we don't keep bees, it's very interesting to learn. I am going to do some research on this , just to learn something new. My property has lots of white clover and it flowers continuously. I used to see quite a number of honeybees in years past. This year, I have seen .... one. I do have many carpenter bees, so they act as pollinators too, but I am sad about the decline n honeybees, I have always liked them. Thank God your hives are clean from this pestilence.

Hmmm... This brings back some painful memories. My family had bees 50 years ago and really enjoyed them when we did. In fact, sadly, I used the last of that honey about 5 years ago (I would only eat it on Sunday morning). However, at that time, our area had a severe outbreak of American Foul Brood and many beekeepers were wiped out. Amazingly, it was a requirement in our state, even back then, to register your hives. When the DEC agent showed up to inspect the hives, and found them to be infected, it was the end. He dropped some sort of poison inside the 4 hives and within 30 minutes there was no activity. We helped him dig a pit in front of them and pushed the hives into it and set them ablaze. I never saw a blaze so intense as that one. It was a very sad day. I have kept my father’s smoker, tools and honey extractor all this time hoping I or one of my siblings might start it some day. I will be retiring next year - who knows. This is very important information and you did well to advance it. Thanks!

American foulbrood is notifiable here in the UK. Sadly a few years ago one of our hives got foulbrood and had to be destroyed. Heart breaking to pour fuel over the bees & their hive and watch it burn 😢 Wouldn't wish any beekeeper that horror.

The other benefit here in TN is, when you register your hives,...IF you happen to have to destroy your hives because of Foulbrood...the state will reimburse the cost of the hives.

I understand your attachment. I think anything you nourish in anyway is easy to gain an attachment. I get attached to my chickens and even my hogs we butcher. It is a healthy respect. I love seeing this is other people. A respect for animals we technically "use" is lost upon our society these days. We waste bc yes it is our money paying but it is not our time, not our attachment. Very sad really.

Would you ever consider doing a live feed with someone who could answer bee keeping questions. I have bumblebees and although we do not get honey they do work very hard for me in the garden and also what I lovingly call my "gentle giants". Would they fight honey bees if I got them?

So very glad your hives are doing well. Vermont requires hives to be registered as well. It comes in handy when they spray weed killer and other harmful toxins along the roads. Registered bee keepers are notified so they can block the entrance the night prior and keep their bees safe.
