Thank you for this lesson. This is the first I have seen of moths in hives. What does the “robbed” before the moths take over? I’m wanting to build bee 🐝 🏡 homes to help the bees survive and for some delicious honey. And I am studying as much and as long as possible before I start the hives. Hopefully the bees will be happy and I know how to take the best care of them during all seasons.
@AnnaKra
@AnnaKra 5 жыл бұрын
Usually when a hive gets robbed, the hive is weakened. The moths take over weak hives. In this case the hive got robbed first and then the moths took over. Hope this helps. I’m sure you will do just fine in your beekeeping journey!

Bees fly at about 15 mph so running is futile, but it always makes me laugh. I have a friend that has a tee shirt that says " I'm a beekeeper, if you see me running try and keep up." Wax moths can take over in no time at all. That is a massive infestation, I had to do the same thing to a nuc last week but I was able to save most of the comb.

Mad bee lol 😂 Wax Moths are terrible here,if you leave extra frames in equipment out for 1 night they'll get laid in..I used to melt Wax ,but now I freeze and then use damaged ones in Swarm Traps,bees will haul webbing out and rebuild them, I don't like to make them fix too many at once,but swarms fix them really well, established hives don't usually because they rather use nice Combs.Now I mean partial damage,not completely annihilated frames...

Anna, I have two 8 frame hives and noticed each hive has about 1.5 frames of honey. Ask your dad if I should move those frames to the outside of the box and bring the empty frames towards the middle, or should I add another box on top and put the full frames of honey in the top box and add empty frames to replace the honey frames I took out. I do see brood, but it seems they are running out of room for the queen to lay eggs.I see lots of nectar, some pollen, and I do see some drone brood start to develop. We are going into December, so is it too early to add a box on top?

@@AnnaKra Thanks Anna so do I. what bees are you using mainly? We use Canolians they are a bit more gentle than the three band Italians and they are a cooler climate bee which is good as Melbourne is cooler than Sydney way (NSW) and Queensland which is more humid. Anna, your father said to check every week. Is that all year long, or just during the hot summer months. I had a moth problem and it seems it happens anytime between late May through September. I think when the weather is cold, problems with moths, mites, hive beetles isn't that bad. Please ask your father and let me know what he suggest.
@AnnaKra
@AnnaKra 4 жыл бұрын
He recommended that for beginners, that is the best way to learn, to check them once a week or so. But, over time you can kind of tell what's going on in the hive based on what is happening at the entrance. For winter we leave them alone. It's too cold to check them regularly. You are not supposed to check them if it's too cold outside. The brood will die. I hope this helps!

Oh my gosh , I lost a hive to these wax moths to, they destroyed the whole colony and frames everything. Next time I just burn my hive there bad insects. No good, I feel bad for that colony. It happens tho so don’t feel to bad .i burn my hive because if you miss any moth eggs good chance they start again

Just started 2nd year beekeeping. 8/1 my hive went queenless, so I took a frame of nurse bees, eggs and larvae from a different hive. By the end of the month the moths took over. Was it to little to late. I moved the hive into an open field and let the frames get robbed out. Now what do I do?
@AnnaKra
@AnnaKra 5 жыл бұрын
It sounds like it's a bit too late. Is there anything left in that hive? If there is you can combine the remaining bees with another colony, the moths like to take over weak hives and get rid of all moth infected comb.
@jarnold8803
@jarnold8803 5 жыл бұрын
Do I need to treat the wood frames with something
@AnnaKra
@AnnaKra 5 жыл бұрын
@@jarnold8803 That it is up to you. Different beekeepers do it differently. My dad lets the bees clean the frames and the super. He just switches out the comb. Also, the robbers like to attack queenless hives, because they are queenless they are in a weaker state, we had a perfectly strong hive that lost a queen, the robbers took over for no apparent reason. If you know they are queenless, especially in the robbing season, keep a closer eye on that hive, in the future. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching!
