Nice jig! Working with mixed equipment is such a pain. This was a great approach! Thank you for sharing, and best of success to your bees!! 🐝🐝🐝

Again, I enjoyed you video. Great tip on painting equipment with “sludge”. I paint the inside of my salvaged EPS boxes converted to hives and in my humble observations, reinforcing what you so skillfully pointed out, the bees readily accept it.

Yup, love the sludge!

Hello, to a fellow 8 frame medium everything guy. There ain't that many of us out there. I make all my own equipment except for the frames. Foundationless as well. Been considering using wax foundation for the brood area just to cut down on all the drone cells though. Good video, I started out this way so I did not have any deep equipment to worry about. But, when I did make some nuke boxes for myself, I did not rip my 1x8 down to the medium height just so I could drop in a frame with a cell below.

Me too! And I like to make most of my boxes from wood that I scavenge on bulk pickup days.

That slatted rack is a great idea! And I'm very interested in how you prepare the propolis "sludge". I coat some hive hardware with linseed oil and I'm not sure if the bees care for it, besides the fact that it's costly. Perhaps you can post a video regarding your technique using propolis? Thanks!

Hi Mike, check the video about how to make propolis tincture from about four months ago. I talk about the sludge and what to do with that at the end of that video.

@@southflbeekeepingwithrich Thanks for the direction. I'm looking forward to checking out the rest of your videos too.

Guess I gotta go watch the video where you make propolis sludge, because that's really interesting. Do you coat your frames with it, too?
@southflbeekeepingwithrich2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I coat everything with it.

Known as a Miller slatted rack after Dr Charles Miller (1831-1920)
@southflbeekeepingwithrich2 жыл бұрын
Yes Miller was the original designer of the slatted rack but his were crosswise rather than parallel to the frames. Someone reimagined them with a parallel design after Varroa started.

I don’t know why you would want mediums in the nuc brood box with a rack under it , doesn’t make any sense to me , what’s the purpose of it .
@southflbeekeepingwithrich Жыл бұрын
I am an all medium beekeeper. The rack is a simple form of slatted rack which gives the bees relief from the heat and extra space to hang out which reduces the swarming impulse. If I put medium frames in a deep nuc, I would have comb under the frames which would have to be cut off before transferring them. I usually build nucs 2 high before transferring them to regular boxes.

Thanks for the information. It is actually neaartica, and they say it is most similar to the extinct species, Apis armbrusteri Zeuner from the Miocene epoch of southwestern Germany, but since the bee they brought over was called the German Black bee, I'll call that a gimme. Just more proof of how fascinating these little bugs are.
