I learned in school while I was studying costuming if you're trying to dye something black that you should add a bit of brown dye to the mixture. The brown cancels out the cool tones that make the plain black dye look blueish/purple. Hope this helps!

Some underrated apocalypse skills are: - blade sharpening - knot tying - how to read stars and land navigation - making soaps from animal fat (cos trust me, we’ll be stinky in the apocalypse) - fermentation/preserving meats - caring for pregnant women and reproductive health - teaching ppl how to read and write - knowledge of edible and herbal plants that grow in your area - conflict resolution Do I have all of those? Nope. But I’m learnin :p I just learned how to sew a button the other day.

My mom mixes a bit of the Rit yellow dye with the black for all of her dye jobs to make the end result more of a neutral dark charcoal grey as opposed to purple (seeing the purpley end result of your pieces unlocked a childhood memory of watching my mom dye her clothes.) Also rit sells a "back to black" kit with a jet black dye-I haven't used it but it might be worth a shot!

My mending projects aren't progressing, but I did organize nearly all of my 150+ fabrics and many of my 30+ unfinished projects. Most fabrics are now organized by type and colour in a cabinet, unfinished clothing with pins is on the crafting table, unfinished without pins and things I'd like to cut soon are in shelves in the kitchen, and everything that needs to be hand-sewn is in a box in the living room. Knitting stuff is in my daughter's room. So yes I have wayyyy too much stuff and yes it has taken over every room in my house, but we're making progress 😅 to be clear a lot of my fabrics I have inherited from my mother, who was also a fabric hoarder, so it's kind of only 50% my fault I've got to this point... Kind of. I still feel so much better having some organization, and I've set a goal to finish at least one project per week (or two mending jobs) so I'll get through this in 2 or 3 years hopefully 😊

Sewing is definitely a solid apocalypse skill to have, because so many people just don't know how anymore, even simple mending skills. Even more so that most ppl don't think about - cooking. Given how many people just can't/won't figure out how to cook, even after having all that time in quarantine a few years ago, cooks will be in huge demand. Especially the ability to improvise with weird ingredients, given that agriculture and food supply lines will be shut down or at least interrupted in a full on apocalypse. I can do both, so hopefully that's good for my apocalypse resume lol.

Here's the thing with apocalyptic scenarios: Just look to any war zone (in present times like Ukraine being attacked by Russia or back in history): When people are not fighting, they usually die in these situations from hunger, exposure to the elements or disease. So here are my suggestions: cultivate a victory garden like the brits during WWII, be able to built simple structures (or try camping with just the bare necessities, learning how to make fire or filter water), inform yourself about basic hygiene rules and maybe first-aid skills? I would also recommend learning about cooking with less (and that does not only mean: few ingredients, but also maybe consider a blackout situation... or such?). -- Usually, I would say, my niche hobby is learning about history, because there have been some genius people figuring things out for themselves all over space and time.

To make black very black I have found that diluting black acrylic paint with water and rubbing alcohol works really well. (I mixed by thirds so one small bottle of black acrylic, with a third of rubbing alcohol and a third of water - the water and rubbing alcohol easily rinse out the bottle of paint - if you feel it's too thick add more water) Luckily the paint and rubbing alcohol are cheap. You could dip the fabric in but I have found that painting it on with a big brush works quite well. Once coated I hang mine on a hanger and then, outside on a tree. You can then go in and paint over the stitching areas that you want to be black/black as well. (it layers) Rinse in the washing machine after it's been dried outside, and then put the clothes in the dryer to set the "stain" The rubbing alcohol ensures the paint dries quite flexibly. I recently did a pair of pink cotton pocketed pants with this method and it worked GREAT. I now wear them all the time. I guess my post-apocalyptic skill is being able to find alternative uses for everyday things. Like I made a copper pipe and chain into my paper towel holder, which hangs from hooks under my kitchen cabinet.
@victoriam92422 ай бұрын
do you have any idea of what ratios of each to use? this sounds easy, effective, and cheap so I'd love to try it!
@KELLSEY4442 ай бұрын
@@victoriam9242 I have done it in thirds. meaning if you use a small bottle of acrylic paint from Micheals, then use the same bottle to fill with water, and the same bottle filled with rubbing alcohol....I sometimes will add more water to thin it out...(after mixing the solution)... It's super easy to figure out how you like the mixture to "feel" when you paint the cloth with it. I have used this after using Rit Black/Black dye that wasn't Black enough. And I've used it on white cotton too. If it isn't dark enough just paint it again.

It's the only way to mend! All at once. Practical and smart. Your chattyness is quite welcome if you ask me. Details matter when mending and sewing! I would have loved to see the flaps left on the jacket and the buttons replaced... but I love those details on a jacket. Perhaps you could find a fabric, or several compatible fabrics (like in your hair scrunchy) to make a new ruffle panel for your too-short skort skirt?
