Awesome film. Makes me totally miss Colorado - my home. I live in Germany, and I've been here about 2 years now. I have drunk the beers of several European countries. German pils and hefeweizen are amazing beers, but because of Reinheitsgebot, there is very little variety and/or competition in the market, making it very difficult for new brewers to emerge or for experimentation to take place. That's why places like Colorado are just a very beautiful place. They allow for the reemergence of age-old traditions whilst simultaneously encouraging the multitudes of flavors for multitudes of people.

I was pretty taken aback that towards the end this was more an ad of some brewers against beer sales at groceries/ convenience stores. I'm from Asheville NC...where wine and beer has always been sold at grocery stores (yet has seen a craft beer explosion). If anything, I'd say your BMC drinker might at least hesitate to try a bottle of a local beer if it's at the grocery. And in GA, I go to my favorite package store that specializes in a better craft beer selection then my local grocery.

Why/how does keeping beer over 3.2% out of the grocery stores make CO so strong in craft beer? Being from Oregon, I love being able to walk in to most any grocery store and find tons of craft beer. I was in Denver last fall, and found it so odd and frustrating that I couldn't get craft beer at a grocery store or a gas station. Is this partly due to MillerCoors' influence in the legislature?

when I first moved to Colorado(6 years ago) I was going insane with the prices of the beer here compared to what it was when I was living in Chicago(13-14 dollars for a 24 pack of MGD in Chicago, 25 here in Colorado) When I learned liquor stores here are 1 license per owner, it changed my thinking. No chaining major brands even though all stores sell the same basic beers. I can understand the taxation of it, it keeps the mom and pop shops going, which I always preferred anyways. After being here for a few years, I love the local craft beers more over what Im used to (Guinness is still my favorite). I have even started home brewing myself (my dream job). Keep it local, support your local brewery, and keep the income here!!
@iLoveTurtlesHaha8 жыл бұрын
It's like $30 for a pack of crap beer here in Ontario Canada. Although alcohol sales go towards universal health care so I guess I can deal with it. Also, I rarely drink so I guess that's also good? haha

As someone who can buy Dale's Pale Ale *at a Safeway* on the East coast (I wouldn't, of course, because it's not a good PA), the debate about Colorado's beer regulations just sound silly. Even chain stores often give individual store managers authority to buy local products, so you don't have to "fly to California" to negotiate with the head of a corporation to sell a few cases of your beer. You probably have to meet with the person that individual store hired to manage their beer and wine stock (like the one who managed the craft beer section of my local Safeway...) just like you would with the liquor store owner. The challenge of changing the rules on liquor store owners who opened a business under a certain regulatory system *is* a legitimate policy challenge, but get off your high-horses about the "big corporations" and "mom and pop" stores. Other states manage to get really great local craft beers in grocery stores, I think Colorado could manage. This was a fun doc about Colorado breweries until it turned into a political hack job in the second half hour.

As someone who has been in the liquor industry for 7 years, is from the East Coast, and who now lives in Denver, I have to say, it's not quite as simple as you may think. If you're not familiar with the concept of "pay-to-play", to put it briefly, this concept consists of large companies (MillerCoors, ABinBev, Heineken, etc) "buying out" companies to only sell their products which is very appealing to other large corporations (Target, Walmart, Safeway, etc) because it saves them a boat load of money. Luckily little mom and pop shops have a littttttle bit more integrity than to sell out to these corporate entities. Now, regarding this film... They're saying that if every Safeway, Kings Soopers and Walmart can sell full strength beer (which is above 3.5%abv) you're pretty much only going to see ABinBev & MillerCoors products on the shelves... While you may see breweries like Lagunitas (now owned by Heineken), Ballast Point (owned by Constellation Brands [Grupo Modelo - Corona, Modelo, Pacifico]), Oskar Blues, and Samuel Adams (Boston Beer Company), who are all large enough to weasel their way into the stores, you will not see small breweries on those shelves. Where you WILL see them is on the shelves of the liquor store on the corner of your block... Unfortunately that little liquor store won't be there very long because it makes its money by selling the cheap shit (which is now being sold at your local Stop&Shop for $9.99/18pk), in order to keep the local craft product in stock. Hopefully this made some sense. I understand the act of selling the products that you hate to sell the ones that you love is hypocritical, but it is how it is, they bend the rules so we bend them the other way. Eventually it'll probably break, hopefully not on us.
@jeffr.41577 жыл бұрын
Also to clarify the law a little bit for you... It's not that NO convenient stores, supermarts, or grocery stores can sell full strength alcoholic beverages... It's that they can only have one liquor license in a specific radius. And I've been to the Safeway in the Denver area that has the liquor license, it's a real shit selection.

I'd suggest that the reason it is called "Beer Culture" and not "Colorado Beer" is that it is intended to communicate that this culture in Colorado is about something that *could* and perhaps *should* extend across the country. Most other regions don't have this depth of culture around Beer.

As always in the US there's no limit to the lenght that the big corporations go to overcome the small but thriving local businesses (in this case beer breweries).......And they really use every means necessary to achieve their plans.......I'm glad to watch how local cummunities participates with one another with every step of making beer in this case.....Someone supplies barley or similar grains.....someone grows hops......many local residents work in those breweries and farms and other facilities.......I mean everyone benefits from this symbiosis........And then a big brewery tries to enforce their product into the local market with every means (lobbing, influencing local government, persuading local market owners to buy their product rather then local brewers who were supplying them for years, and so on.....)......So sad......I would rather see the local community to thrieve under local management and selling local products over the big corporations (who in most cases totally destroy local communities in every way imaginable)......I wish for every small brewery to succeed and keep local community strong
