Tastes change. I used to LOVE barrel aged beers. Now, when I see a barrel-aged version of a great stout (like Surly Darkness or Ten Fidy), I think, “what a waste of a great beer.” The barrel character always overpowers the base stout characteristics.

You are so right, I had imperial stouts non barrel aged recently and I can tell you I was impressed how nicely I was able to pick up all the nice ingredients in it. With barrel aged beer I mostly get the strong alcohol and slightly some other flavors

I drink half a bottle and put a cap on it and save the rest for the next night even though it won’t be as fresh.
