Maddie, have you ever read Longfellow's long story poem, "Hiawatha" ? I think if you can pull it up on your phone you will really enjoy it while you are doing these last miles, because that forest is the forest Longfellow wrote about. "This is the forest primeval, the shades and the murmuring Hemlocks." "By the shores of Gitchegoomee, by the shining lake sea waters, stood the wigwam of Nakomis, Daughter of the Moon, Nakomis, and the little Hiawatha, ...." I can't remember the rest! I got ten dollars for memorizing the beginning once. I think you will like it.

Actually Longfellow wrote about Hiawatha located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Big lake Gitch Gumee is Lake Superior.

Hey Maddie! Glad to see you back on trail. I guess that little break after reaching Katahdin helped you and Smoke get some much-needed rest. I don't imagine there are many other hikers still on the AT in Maine, at this time, so the trail will be all yours to enjoy. Just be safe and try to finish before it gets too cold. Hey Maddie. Glad to see you summited Katadhin and got back on the trail for your “bonus” miles. Also glad you made it home safely a few weeks ago. I spoke to your Uncle David last night when taking Ben’s boys out for Halloween. He said you were home and safe. What a fantastic endeavor and a lifelong memory you all made. Congratulations! As someone who spent a good time in the Middle East in the military for 10 yrs, it's going to be interesting to see your view after completing the trail and then going home. Meaning, I was conditioned and needed to go back after each deployment. If I did that journey on the AP trail, I would probably need more after going home for a bit, tbh. I congratulate you on grinding the hike out!!!

We will be with you and when you are done we will miss you. I came on late in the journey so I just watched the youtube how you got your trail name and you were so happy. It was a real real happy video for so many reasons and I love seeing the stars in the sky, generous trail angels.... I can't imagine not checking in, so I just got the audio book --- "where is the next shelter" so I don't have to go full withdrawal of trail journey....

I love your authenticity. For example, you skipped miles (for good reason, IMO), talked about it, and then filmed yourself going back to make them up. Unfortunately, not all thru hikers do that and will claim they completed the whole thing when they didn’t, so I admire your integrity…and your whimsical grins! You’ve already achieved so much and I don’t doubt for a second that your next video(s) will chronicle the true end of your epic AT adventure. Cheers! 🍻

Where you started again was also our final push in 2022. Winter hit and there was just one inch of snow over the ice you have anyways on these rock plates. If someone happen to be there right now, you really need substantial crampons in your pack as winter can hit any day now. They are life changing or even life prolonging. I would have been really happy about this rain. It's the opposite of ideal but at least you saw where you put your feet down. We had to abandon in direction of Rangeley but I will be out on the AT again in the south comme January. Climate change is horrible but I would be happy anyways if I can do much more of the AT next year in spring and possibly go till Katahdin - it will be closed if I have bad luck.

Story teller Ranger. I do love you heart and attitude. I would have thought getting back on the AT would have bedbugs very challenging psychologically. But then the picture is the fall colors. There is only a small number of through hikers who would even be experiencing hiking in southern Maine in the fall so this only adds to the specialness of your AT experience. Hike onward be safe make good choices and enjoy your AT. ❤😊

So many things come to mind... Love the way you say 'git' for get, the smiley faces you make and the reflections on the way of the Trail. Can you imagine what those woods might say if they could talk? And things happening for a reason? Perhaps you're hinting at cause and effect relationships - always look for them when you might think there's a coincidence, but remember - some things are not meant to be known. Finish strong. It's hard to believe you've been on the trail for over six months and it's so cool to see the contrast between those first flushes of greenery in the south back near the beginning to the reds and yellows now - it really struck me as you were crunching your way through all the leaves after you got back on trail. I gotta say that the forklift would have not made it very far on the AT, so it is just as well that you didn't buy one. Yeah, I know, silly. Anyways, not that you don't have time pressure, as this is the beginning of October, you have a good couple of weeks before the weather gets really not fun. So, I'd say just get up whenever, make some miles each day (when it isn't raining/snowing) and enjoy the turning leaf colors, the fantastic views of the stars and remember that soon you'll be home with your feet up, having a great beer and wondering what the next adventure will be.

Hi, I love your journey! Thinking about doing this next year. You should make a final "checklist" of do's and don'ts on the trail....would love to listen to you recount this journey in review. Also, I am wondering why you didn't use a hammock? That kind of preference needs to be explained for newb's like me. I mean there are alot of nuance questions about obstacles on your hike that people would like to know about. Like bears bugs rain and shady folk you've met along the way and how you overcame them. You know you dont have to get up early. You have ptsd due to the environment of the trail. People think....oh I got to be up early. Not necessarily the best idea. You can hike harder when we'll rested. I hear voices all day long. I use sleep as my anti depression. I will ignore everyone and everything to make sure I'm getting my dose of sanity.

We went northbound! That way we got to get the harder terrain out of the way first and got to experience the trail the way of our NOBO friends would’ve done it!
