The best album, in my opinion, is Music For The Jilted Generation. They totally flipped everything upside-down and took risks. It paved the way for everything that came after! Their Law, Poison, No Good and 3 Kilos were a combination of what was to come!

So…Liam Howlett is responsible for all of the production. There are band members for live shows but Prodigy are Liam, Keith (RIP), Maxim and formerly Leeroy who left Liam makes the music, Keith and Maxim did some vocals and hyped the crowd at live shows They started off as dancers and MC’s during the rave scene days in the early 90’s But to answer the question, Liam is behind the music The group are named after Liam’s first synthesiser, the Moog Prodigy

The Prodigy really bridged the gap between dance and rock… they were a mainstay of the UK festival circuit in the 90s and 2000s and all the heavy metal kids would turn out to see them as well as all the ravers that had followed them through from the rave scene in their earlier days. 🔥🔥🔥

Great to see you boys on some Prodigy! A HUGE portion of the lads from England around my age that were teenagers during the 90's loved the Prodigy. For me both Experience and Music For the Jlited Generation are the best. Experience is the epitome of rave culture at the time. Jilted was a masterclass of dance/rock/electronic mashup genres. In the late 90’s you could be at a mainstream popular club and the DJ would drop Vengaboys “We like to party”, the Armand Van Helden mix of “Spin Spin Sugar”, and “Smack my Btch Up” all in the same set. Variety. What a time in Electronic Music.

Mini history lesson from my guys at Beers & Bars: Electronic/Synthesizer artists have been around since the 60s and 70s but the music was primarily ambient and atmosphere (think Brian Eno and Kraftwerk, who were genius pioneers) Later, American Hip and Hop and Chicago House music made its way across the pond to Europe and got mixed in with the sub culture... and these techno artists started using those genre's musical elements to create breakbeat club music; Acid House, Breaks, Trance which was hard stuff to Rave to.... ideally high af on Es, Speed,... Aphex Twin, aka Richard D. James from Ireland he's credited with pushing Acid House/breakbeat techno in a more creative, Auteurist direction, but there were many others in the underground scene who also contributed, such as 808 State, with their 1989 milestone track PACIFIC. And The KLF with 3 A.M. ETERNAL in 1991. Then, another major release was the ACCELERATOR album by The Future Sound of London aka Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans, with their track PAPUA NEW GUINEA... a huge hit and can be credited with likely influencing Liam Howlett (The Prodigy) on his style of music, as well as many others from the scene, especially with making underground breakbeat-techno more mainstream. So, The Fat of The Land was released quite late in the life of the genre. Along with artists The Chemical Brothers and Fluke, this music hit it's commercial peak in the late 90s and early 2000s. ...BTW, we also had what was labeled "Trip-Trop" emerging at that time, artists like Massive Attack, Neneh Cherry, Primal Scream and Portishead. All of whom have contributed some generational classic LPs.

The Prodigy generally "wear their influences on their sleeve" because Liam's song production is massively sample based. There are some fascinating breakdowns of the track tracing back where all the samples originated from. But it's complete genius as despite working with samples a lot he makes absolutely original new bangers from it all and sculpts everything together into his own vision and then can add synths and vocals from Keith†/Maxim on top to complex the cake mix First saw The Prodigy live in summer 1997 in Leeds UK, 6 weeks after this album had just dropped.. most recently saw them last summer at a festival in the Swiss Alps 2024. The energy has not waned, they still got the fire 🔥 There's a lot of electronic music that predates The Prodigy, but nothing else sounded like The Prodigy when they came along - it blew my mind when I got into them as a 12 year old in 1992 Cheers! 🍻

Amazing that our one little island that is the UK has spawned beasts like this. What makes The Prodigy stand out amongst others at the time was that they bridged so many different social groups and music genres, dance, rock, rap, hip hop etc. I was 9 when jilted generation came out and everyone was listening to them, truly remarkable group and godspeed to Keef Flint (RIP)

For a fuller understanding of the Prodigy and their place within UK and world music culture, see the documentary series 'That UK Sound'.kzbin.info/aero/PLlCEg4hCa1LHLLYk4KQQIGPMhXFy2FMXY&si=Gx9ToKWo-hPKrQII kzbin.info/aero/PLlCEg4hCa1LHLLYk4KQQIGPMhXFy2FMXY&si=Gx9ToKWo-hPKrQII It places the scene within the melting pot that was the UK in the late 80s and 90s. The Prodigy certainly weren't the first, but they certainly helped refine that sound. This came after 8-10 years of progression from Acid House to Bleep Techno to Hrardcore to Jungle to Drum & Bass, taking influences from all of those and their sources such as reggae, house, hip hop and throwing a few new influences in there such as punk etc. The new sound was really introduced with Music for the Jilted Generation and this refined the sound further. My daughter's second ever gig was The Prodigy at Alexandra Palace. The energy in the place was like being back at a rave in the 90s. Don't forget that back in the 90s, across the UK, every weekend there were in excess of 100k people going out every weekend for a full on night that started at 10pm and didn't stop until at least 6am.

The first 2 albums are essential listening and I would defo suggest listening to singles from the first album as the LP mixes differ from the single releases (except for out of space which I seen you already done which was released as a single after the LP 'Experience had already been released) Everybody in the place, Fire (Burning version) Wind it up and the flip side of their debut single "Charly' which is called 'Your Love' and is probably my favourite by them. The genre for the music at this time was called Hardcore. Voodoo people and Poison from the 2nd LP Jilted Generation are amazing but this LP has the extended single versions so give that a go in full!! Cheers lads all the best.

I used to listen obsessively to this album when it came out. I had just gotten my first car, and fitted it with a descent sound system. I blasted diesel power quite a lot… it made you be seen, and for an 18 year old kid, that was the way to go 😂

I was lucky enough to see The Prodigy live in 1997 in their home county of Essex. My feet hardly touched the floor during the whole set and ached for a few days after. Was superb. RIP Mr Flint.

Love this. First ever album i ever used the old limewire to get, I've met Keith in my early festival days. Actually was a blessing and he was lovely. I remember this album being the first controversial with smack my b up. Parents warned heavy on them. Charley Says has to be their best. Just cause it is. Always got time to listen to you guys enjoy music. :)

Sweet memories geezers thanks. Attended 3 Prodigy gigs before this dropped, hard to overstate the anticipation - HMV opened midnight to sell this first & I was in that line. This music genre is called Hardcore, period. Spawned from Acid House before quickly evolving into Jungle then DnB. Liam is the brains, master technician with drumming background, early in scene & responsible for bringing to mainstream. Also first bringing guitar riffs. Experience & Jilted albums are proper trips, love to hear reactions. Happy Hardcore is sister genre if you likes keys & female vocals, DJ Dougal good start point. KUTGW. RIP Keith.

Hi guys, great little videos. Well done for taking time to switch lanes to appreciate their most expansive album. Prodigy had never tied their music to a specific genre of dance music. The closet synergy was Experience, which was UK Rave/Hardcore, Your Love being a nailed on ravers favourite to this day. Rave died 93/4, replaced by Jungle/D&B but their 2nd album Jilted never goes near a pigeon hole and to call the Prodigy either of those 2 is simple ignorance of the scene at the time. Prodigy had turned to festivals and large live outdoor performances. It's like Glastonbury, is it dance/rock or a hundred things in between and the Prodigy lever their sound to appeal a variety of different festivals but still loved by all. So that Dance ock balance is what shifts from Jilted and FOTL. So take Breathe, loved by the hardcore raver to Diesel power, which is a Rock favourite. Firestarter was a No1 chart calling card to all. We rock, we dance but still shock. You MUST watch the full version of the video for Smack my 'Biatch' up. It was banned most places but just great video and great ending. Also bitch is used here as Ice T does with his OG track 'Bitches 2' to describe men, women, things, good, bad. RIP Keef 🙏🦀🐜. We live forever, no tourists ✊️ PS. Their last album, 2018 'No Tourists' is certified 💯💣💥

I was 20 when this came out, my family were already Prodigy fans at this point (we had 4 copies of Music for the Jilted Generation in the house!). My younger sister wanted to pick up the album at the midnight release so I had to accompany her (I was going to buy the album on day of release anyway so it was no hardship). I distinctly remember standing in the queue at Virgin Megastore at midnight waiting to buy it and hearing Mindfields for the first time. This album definitely wasn't the birth of this style The Prodigy's previous album "Music for the jilted generation" already had laid down this sound and there were other bands doing it too. I'd recommend checking out some Utah Saints for an example of another band who were doing that rock/rave crossover in the early days (1992) with samples from the likes of Slayer and Kate Bush I Want You - kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWnTn5all6-rfMU Something Good - kzbin.info/www/bejne/eajLiZ2LqciajJI (avoid the 2008 remix) If you want a full album recommendation then you should really do yourself a favour and pick up 1994's "Stacked Up" by Senser. An amazing rap/rock/dance crossover and one of my favourite albums ever. kzbin.info/www/bejne/foC5n4x-q8mLfZI

I love listening to you guys speculating on where D&B came from. This is my interpretation of it having been on the receiving end of it's intoxicating nature since I was a child. 'House' and 'Techno' had a illegitimate child called 'Acid House'. Then 'Acid house' sporns 'Hardcore' in 1990-1991 in the UK. This evolves into 'Jungle Techno' and or 'Prototype D&B' as I like to call it, as well as 'UK Garage' and 'Jungle'. Producers in general at this time become better at making their own music, less obvious hip hop samples are used and it becomes more about sampling beats and cutting them up to make more complex bars that a drummer would struggle to reproduce. It's now 1995. It all happened so quickly. The whole illegal rave thing is long gone and the government have moved everyone into nightclubs or festivals. This is when the Prodigy are the most commercial thing of the whole movement.

Any thing on Goldie's label 'Metalheadz, records like 'Metropolis' by Adam F. 'No U-Turn' records with 'Ed Rush and Nico' this is D&B at it's purest. Respect to Goldie, Dillinja, Doc Scott, Nico, Adam F, LTJ and everyone else who turned it from chuck away rave music into a one of the most successful branches of "Dance music" there ever was.

I listened to it pretty much non-stop while I was away and bought new batteries so I could listen to it for the 14 hour plane trip home.

The last track was released by female seattle grungers L7 on their album Hungry for Stink lp in 1994, the prodigy cover with Keith singing the vocals and the original singer Donita Sparks actually doing the backing vocals on the prodigy version of her song and which it was only recorded a couple of years after the original which in my opinion is really friggin cool.

The Prodigy influenced other massive bands like Rammstein and Linkin Park, not to mention electronic acts like Chase & Status and Pendulum. The Prodigy also collaborated with Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine and Dave Grohl from Nirvana/Foo Fighters. Their music has been on a lot of movie and game soundtracks. For example, Mindfields is on The Matrix OST and it is played in the scene in the club where Neo meets Trinity for the first time.
