It is no longer possible for them to starve to death. Klei removed hive starvation If there's less than 30kg of water it'll heat up hotter then 400c. It actually does ~7 second increments. I've used this to produce 900c, so viable for other stuff like say a petroleum or sour gas boiler.
@FrancisJohnYT3 жыл бұрын
Good to know, is it automatable and reliable to do that?
@louishermann76762 жыл бұрын
@@FrancisJohnYT I'm currently experimenting with it, but yes it can be made to be reliable. I know this is an old thread but I really wanna see your take on one of these hot reactors. When I started with the concept not knowing anything but limiting the coolant flow, I quickly got it hot enough to flash the nuclear waste into fallout, so I built a reactor that still used the heat and it could easily maintain a 900C core temp, run 10 St flat out, and run a petrol boiler. But you lose a shitton of useful heat if you let the waste flash. However waste flashes to fallout around 526C, still more than hot enough to run a petrol boiler basically forever. Problem is, hotter you run the core, and the hotter you get the waste and steam ejecting, the more likely you have an instant flash of between 100-1100kg of waste to fallout, which is enough to gunk up most steam room designs. So there's a trade off: you can power the max number of turbines by keeping core temp at around 200-300C and dropping in 2400C nuclear waste, meaning you have to engineer it to move that heat to the turbines ASAP. Or you can engineer it to keep a core temp around 430C, and have the waste dropping in at about 1400C. You still have to move the heat fast, but it's not as much heat and you can easily siphon off the heat for a boiler. I'm thinking of a core design that has a passive failsafe in case waste flashes in the core that would separate, draw heat to a turbine, and condense it back into waste. The gas core design I worked up last weekend did this like a champ, but I'd rather get all the useful heat out of the waste if I can. My 5-star design goals also involve making it all work with only steel/ceramic, and filling up its cooling loops using only the waste it generates.

Hey, maybe something is wrong on my part, but it seems to me that the beetas do in fact still attack duplicants with atmo/lead suits. It seems to be however, quite inconsistent. I would have to go back and find the post, but someone said that they investigated it and attributed it to just a problem with the ai of the bees usually being too slow to actually recognize when a duplicant enters the room. I would say this at least appears to be true, as during my testing on a completely fresh world, the bees would almost immediately attack the duplicants, regardless of them wearing atmo/lead suits. This would also explain why the bees attack duplicants after restarts if they're in range, since a restart would likely completely reset the ai pathing of the beetas, at least for a short period of time. It also seems to me that the more stuff you have going on in the world, the more rare the beeta attacks actually become, although they still do seem to happen if you only just started getting decent infrastructure set up in your colony. This all shouldn't really matter too much anyways since that vast majority of people probably have their games chugging at around 30-60 fps even on high end pcs by the time they get to bees, but I just thought you should know regardless, since I was confused when I first saw my testing with the bees had completely different result from what was actually happening in your playthrough.

I've run into the same issue and can't seem to find a workaround, though honestly it doesn't happen often enough to be overly concerned. @randomdude5323 жыл бұрын
@@JayRay4924 the way I found to manage it is to remove the top stacked door for each hive and replace it with a tile and a duplicant sensor hanging below it. Then just run the duplicant sensor to a gas pump with carbon dioxide. Or if you want to save some of the co2 or make it so the room can reset back to a vacuum quicker, run the critter sensors into a circuit called an oscillator (you can find an example online under usefull oni automation circuits), with the top buffer gate being set to .5 or 1 and the bottom set to 30. Hi, quick question. Does feeding only 10 kg of uranium per day make the reactor run less efficiently? I mean does it produce less heat per kg of uranium consumed?
@guyincognito14063 жыл бұрын
I think so, that’s what he was noticing himself. It works this way: it’s going to add the same temp to the uranium regardless of the mass used, but the mass used is what transfers heat to the water. The water heat is going to your power. So for the lesser amount of uranium your then outputting less heat into the water and producing less power.

There is one difference though compared to yours. Mine has 2 more turbines located on the bottom rung of the turbine stacks, so mine provides 1700W more power. I don't know why, because from your vid it seems a single reactor can power 8.5, but all 10 of my turbines on each side of the double reactor design are running flat out, with the steam being a nice 200 degrees. I'm half tempted to stick on 2 more and see how much more power I can wring from this baby.

So with all of the inefficiency of "on demand" reactors. I think I'd opt to instead run it at max efficiency and bank the heat. According to my calculations if 10 steam turbines were cooling petroleum from 400C to 200C it would take about 20 tiles of petroleum to allow 10 steam turbines to run full blast for one cycle. So I'd make a giant petroleum tank at least as big as the rest of the reactor that would take ages to heat up. Have some kind of triple door mechanism that can insulate, conduct and open to let out excess steam. Shut it down when it's getting too hot. Keep it shut down until it gets too cool try and keep it running for dozens of cycles and get most of the efficiency out of it.

@Francis John What about a video series the exact opposite of base-lovin? If people could submit troubled or failing bases and you can do a "renovation" of sorts? I watch a Total war content creator who does a fix-your-disaster-battle series where people submit game events they have failed while the youtuber replays it with success. I think it would be a very effective way to highlight many of the issues people seem to run into with a massive number of possible scenarios. With your charisma and effective tutorial video breakdowns I imagine it would be popular.

Grind this Game has already made a series with this "Dude fix my base" Hence why I think Francis will not be doing the same thing.

ok, so was i just looking for this and searched for "francis john uranium reactor tutorial" ...
@T0St3d2 жыл бұрын
I have found that you can run 25 or posable more steam Gen on 1 reactor. Im working on automation for it now.
@FrancisJohnYT2 жыл бұрын
If you restrict water input you can get the nuke waste to come out hotter, hence more heat. But do be careful, you might be able to get 40 steam turbines to run on it but as it gets later in game and the FPS gets lower you will find that they tend to explode. So maybe don't go max turbine and leave a bit of head room for late game slow down.
@BB-dv5ms3 жыл бұрын
I hope they change the nuclear reactor a bit so I don't have to waste as much power gen.
@FrancisJohnYT3 жыл бұрын
I think the theory is you should be able to generate enough uranium to keep it running forever. Though I do understand that it does feel wasteful.

Needing drywall behind mesh was patched out a while back, but it still comes up all the time. You would expect mesh tiles to let gas escape into the background of space but for design reasons they decided against it in the end.

@Francis John the liquid Uranium from the Refinement of Enriched Uranium could be used to melt Ur.Ore, cool that to debris, and feed to beetas for the 90% efficiency. Only other thing I've ever used that byproduct for, is to melt Iron Ore tiles. Guessing others have some more ideas/uses for that sweetsweet >4000°C Uranium, looking forward to reading 😁
@FrancisJohnYT3 жыл бұрын
If you melt uranium ore it turns into the useless depleted uranium unfortunately.

i would invest in power control stations on this. not using them means you lose 4,000 watts of power, or 5 steam turbines worth of power.

Bring back your videos on your series. Your regular series videos are by far the best. I have to stay I get excited to see a new video being posted but then I get sad to see it is just another tutorial video. Bring back you normal series videos. Rimworld and oxygen not included. Those are much more of my favorites.

Had less time that week so I put some tutorials together instead as it's all I had time for. We are back to normal this week but I do have holidays coming up and will be away from my PC

Kinda feel like tutorial videos should be released outside of your schedule but just my opinion..
@mrShift_00443 жыл бұрын
okay, but there is still no episode on schedule, so you not just getting tutorials god knows when but also sit without videos longer. Is that better for you? Have a heart for Francis, he can't do these things all day AND do tutorials at the same time.
@clark33523 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. Should stick with regular schedule for series videos and have these shorter tutorial videos as bonus features. Love your normal series videos they should alternate between your rimworld and ONI each day.
@bpindel3 жыл бұрын
@@mrShift_0044 he has times where he doesnt release a video for 2 or 3 days. Thats a perfect time to have a tutorial video put up. Idk if he has multiple computers but thats also an option if he does is to record the tutotial while theres a big mining montage in his series. I have a heart. Theres other ways to do it lol
@FrancisJohnYT3 жыл бұрын
I made a mistake and let both series hit late game together. Both are running really slow so it takes 8-12 hours of game time to get enough footage for an episode of either before editing. Even with extensive testing I can get the footage for a tutorial in 4-6 hours so the tutorials bought me some time this week to take care of some real world stuff. If I had the time I would like to aim for 4 episodes a week and one tutorial/different. I think the real world job might need to be de prioritized if I'm going to keep doing this.
