Sadly, passed about Moonlight Sonata phase, Beethoven almost entirely lost his hearing, instead hearing a loud ringing in his ear whenever he heard anything. So can you imagine, all the great works past Opus.30 were written when he was deaf, truly a phenomenal man and composer!

Im not his biggest fan, but I kinda feel that he takes beethoven so damn serious, its amazing. Probably my favourite recording of his repertoire. He is unconventional in his dramatic gestures, but at some point I start believing him. I love his masterclass with barenboim, too and you can hear the effect. This recording is perfection

I don’t mind the gestures too much, you can see he is putting everything into the performance. He is a listener just as much as you or me. Plus I don’t really watch him all that much.

There's something non-negotiable and absolute about a great artist, and that is his/her integrity, quite independent of what you call seriousness, or drama or levity. With integrity, everything else is just incidental. Lang Lang comes first, only then comes the pianist-artist. I haven't seen a more 'honest' artist-performer.
@jnmusic99693 жыл бұрын
@@madogsioux5636 I completely agree. But frankly, everyone goes on and on about the minute details of the performer, yet you should just close your eyes, and if you enjoy what you hear, that’s all there is to it.
@VulcanFlamma3 жыл бұрын
Cant believe people criticise him for his gestures and expressions whilst performing !?? If anything it adds to the artist and it shows how much he's feeling the music and giving the piece he's performing his all.
@lifebeelifebee92143 жыл бұрын
He is a true musician/artist, he lives through the music, he becomes music when he plays. It's amazing not only listen, but watch him. he is 22 in this video, when he grew much older, he became more reserved in his expressions. I miss it in older him tho

This is my favourite piece of music. This is my favourite interpretation, bar none. Lang Lang, for all his showmanship and his ability to entertain people who've never heard a note of classical music, has nailed this. His virtuosity is here merely a tool to realise the drama, to convey the emotions to us, to speak. This might not technically a very hard piece for him to play, but he takes his own playing of it very seriously indeed. 0:10 Theatrics? Of course. But also, Lang Lang seems the kind of person who loves the music so much that he can recall the moment he understood the meaning for the first time. 2:00 What a great texture transition. 3:18 He seems to hush the piano by power of will alone. 7:34 It's a lot of notes and it's spectacular, but it's very knotty. So to draw out the conclusion like this, to make it brilliant and sonorous like this, is epic. 7:54 Bravissimo Mr. Lang Lang!

Honestly what is wrong with people accusing pianists/musicians of being too "showy" and "dramatic"? Music is fundamentally an art form. Whilst all forms of art require technique, they also require expression. The purpose of art is to show.

A good pianist is a good showman.
@Algorox3 жыл бұрын
Nothing's wrong with being visually expressive on the piano. However, there's a point where showmanship becomes tacky and distasteful. Lang Lang is an anomaly amongst pianists when it comes to showmanship. Don't get me wrong, he is a pianist with extraordinary finger facility and passion -- easily one of the most refreshing and impactful pianists of this generation. But I understand why audiences of Lang Lang have polarized opinions. While I enjoy most of his interpretations (including this one), some are admittedly low-grade circus acts when you compare it to what's written in the score and when you see him being visually overdramatic at the wrong times. While I agree with your comment in general, I think you're oversimplifying the point. People don't dislike being visually expressive in general; only when it's overdone to become distasteful.
@yin96473 жыл бұрын
@@Algorox Distasteful is subjective, and I can understand why some would think that way. When things are overdramatic, it can become pretentious, but different people have different standards for what is "pretentious". What I'm trying to say is to just let people enjoy what they enjoy, and to not set a certain boundary for others as to where "tackiness" begins.

@richardvolpe7664Ай бұрын
To elainemeyer: Feeling? Emotion? Don't you see (literally) that this is an actor/pianist who's mastered the art of conveying these two qualities by sheer "employment" of a whole gallery of facial expressions and bodily gestures, the likes of which have never (or almost never) been seen on a concert stage? I should think that, by now, his militant, obsessive determination to be a "smash" with his ever-adoring viewers would be obvious. I mean 'painfully' obvious! Feeling and emotion (and don't forget "passion"), as Horowitz wisely pointed out, should come "from inside, not outside." Good luck in trying to make Lang accept, or even understand, this concept. I don't think he's ready to fall out of love with himself. Give it another ten years?

Absolutely sublime :) Definitely a great rendition- it has that feeling of intensity and drive without being too loud, and great clarity (without feeling too dry).

I must admit, despite his amazing technical prowess, the theatrics/drama of his performances a la Liberace, can at times interfere with my listening. That being said, I think upon further listening to him that his performances take him to "another place" beyond the technical- which he has so deftly mastered- where he seems like he is almost in a trance, really deeply into the piece. So I guess what I am saying is I have come to terms with all the drama in light of the extremely gifted playing. Thank you Lang Lang!

Lang Lang is brilliant! And here's how he would play the famous Toccata & Fugue in D minor by J.S. Bach. Hearing is believing! kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWjTdWdjgbaVbqM

Liberace does come to mind. I just listen to his genius which is great. Watching takes a little away. Rubenstein had something to say once about showiness maybe indicates a little lack of talent. Not in this case.

What is marvellous about Lang Lang, apart from his stupendous faultless technique, is his sense of *dramaturgy*: each piece he plays is a drama, a narrative, a journey. What talent!

I find Lang Lang,s ability to play a vast repertoire of classical music pieces from memory absolutely astounding !!

@@joandebruin3847 All pianists (and most violinists) perform from memory. It would be "absolutely astounding", as you say, to see them reading from a score.

Wow! This guy has to be the 'Jerry Lee Lewis' of classical piano! Whenever I hear this piece, for some reason, I always visualise struggling through a snow blizzard on a dark stormy night - a fabulous interpretation of Beethoven at his most elemental best!

I am a big Gould fan but I have to say LL is the one pianist who captures me in the same way. The dedication to precision, timing, tempo and musical playing. I can tell he is in the music itself and I can feel it. Terrific. It's funny the ending reminds me of Scriabin where the both seem to want to just burst out of the piano. I would call it frenzy, where the music almost seems to burst out of the universe itself. Vers la Flame takes longer but still the same feeling.
