an absolute beauty, nothing has been composed like this before or after. It is said that the violin part represents Christ, starts with a very high note and comes down to earth, ends going up to high notes again.

I defy anyone to find a more beautiful piece of music than this. Solo violin, soprano, chorus, God, and Beethoven. Doesn't get any better.

I wanted to think something like this. Having just read some commentary about this piece which brought me here. I wanted to experience it fro myself. But (don't you all be mad at me...) - No. While it's beautiful music, I'm not moved in the way Mozart moves me. This, for example (for me..) - does not come close to Mozart's Kyrie Eleison. (I'm also a great fan of Mozart's Piano concertos - some of which passages nver fail to bring a tear of joy.

Did you enjoy this? Then, thank the teachers. The line of teachers. The long succession of teachers who, since this was composed in the early 1800's, have taught their students to ... Read music, Play each instrument expertly. Make these instruments. The vocal coaches who trained the voices The teachers of conductors. The architects who designed these acoustically magnificent halls. We hear this, we know of this music that has come down to us through the centuries because of the many generations of people who have passed their skills on to others. Teachers !

This is a superbly realised version of this extraordinary piece of music - I love Harnoncourt's pacing and timbre. In comparison, most versions seem way too fast and clattery, they miss the mellow and plaintive heart which is the core of the piece. The violin is sensational and captures the mood perfectly, thank-you.

The depiction of the holy spirit through the song of the violin is sublime. I do wish the violin was a little more assertive, but the overall sweep of this piece remains too heavenly for words

“The Benedictus. Blessed and blessing, this music is in some sort the equivalent of the night, of the deep and living darkness, into which, now in a single jet, now in a fine interweaving of melodies, now in pulsing and almost solid clots of harmonious sound, it pours itself, stanchlessly pours itself, like time, like the rising and falling, falling trajectories of a life. It is the equivalent of the night in another mode of being, as an essence is the equivalent of the flowers, from which it is distilled.” (Aldous Huxley)
