I tried playing this monstrosity in college as a music composition major. The reason I refer to it as that is because it takes a truly skilled pianist to play this all the way through flawlessly. Your wrists literally want to break off a quarter of the way through. I consider myself a pretty good piano player but never had the desire or perseverance to come close at mastering this piece. And to play the whole thing by memory, holy Christ. This guy makes it looks absolutely effortless.

Very hard to answer with a number. He obiously has studied piano for a long time judging by his technic and skill. It' not so much how long it took to learn this piece as it is the number of years it took to gain these skills and how quick a study he is. For a skilled student of 7 or 8 years, I would guess he could learn it AND memorize it in about two weeks practinging about 2 hours a day or less. I'm the palindrome of your age, and as a former professional musician, I can say this performance is quite remarkable. On a personal note (a little off-topic - pardon my wall of text): I love the technical excellence of the music of Chopin. I love the same about Beethoven and Mozart, and Mahler. But they have something Chopin didn't. He was wealthy and well taken care of his entire life, while the others in my example had very hard lives. Their music contains something the music of Chopin lacks: heart and soul, but more, it lacks the depth and grace of the divine. When you perform each, you can feel the differences deep inside. I have known other musicians who never picked up on that as I did then and do now. That's okay. We each can enjoy things for different reasons. That's the beauty of all the arts. Each can touch everyone in different ways. That's okay. More than okay; it's beautiful.

@@juv7026 No. This is a very mediocre rendition and your average conservatoire graduate will blow him away. If this guy didn't have film star looks and a marketing machine behind him no one would pay attention to his playing. He'd never make it in the classical music world because the competition is just way better. I have seen better pianists than him end up becoming teachers supplementing their income by doing occasional chamber music performances and conducting the local church choir. Let alone that he'd ever be able to play Beethoven at a level similar to great Beethoven performers like Wilhelm Kempff, Arthur Schnabel or Rudolf Buchbinder. @@skwalka6372 Actually, you do remember single notes. As Horowitz put it, you have to be 200 percent sure of what you're playing, because the first hundred percent will leave you when you sit down to perform. That's where having a firm knowledge of the details, not just notes, but chords, chord progressions, gestures, body language, overarching structure comes in. Playing piano at a virtuoso level is a monumental task of memory.
@coolguy4709 Жыл бұрын
The way you put it makes us sound like computers. In reality, it's a lot more natural. I think it combines muscle memory, visual queues, and audio perception to memorise it. Every one of us might do it differently. Some are better some are worse. I usually memorise how different parts in an orchestra play it, but some people take it further and can transcribe a part down to every note, stem, letter, dynamic marking, and spelling.

I actually wept watching this astonishing performance. Does this young man realize what a gift he has? And I'm sure he's worked very hard to achieve this level of accomplishment. These classical pieces continue to be a gift to humanity and transcend the differences of cultures and societies. I will remember this performance the rest of my life!

Absolutely amazing to watch & beautiful, beautiful music!! Memorization of such an astounding piece is astonishing to me!
@Bvic3 Жыл бұрын
Memorisation isn't that hard. You don't mentally play each note, but blocks that are logical and predictable. Accordingly, you only memorise the sequence of those blocks. But then, even those blocks come in a somewhat predictable pattern. So in the end, you don't need to memorise much information. The more experienced you are, the more building blocks you'll have assimilated and the more you can compress the data in your brain.

I am left speechless here . He had me in tears . I can not even imagine the years and years of this young mans endless training to get to THIS level of performance . ALL FROM MEMORY no less . What he gave up in his childhood must have been great ... such as having school friends , vacations , hiking , going out to movies ETC . He stayed home and practiced . The pay off from all of that was THIS . He is as fine as any concert pianist out there at any age. It must be so incredible to be able to just express yourself this way . To relieve stress and let it ALL FLOW OUT . Congrats on creating your art !
