4:34 - 5:11 If there was any one time when the Romantic era began it must have been when Beethoven wrote this. Especially 5:05. I can't imagine anything like it being written before Beethoven.

I love the tempi - nothing bloated, nothing attempting to sound monumental - just the fierce energy of the music itself. Does anyone know the orchestra and conductor?

Strange how the pitch gradually dropped during these 43 minutes. Play the first 10 seconds and then the last 10 seconds and have your ears blown away by almost half a semitone.
@isaach42965 жыл бұрын
Maybe because the orchestra has been playing for so long that their instruments gradually becomes out of tune?
@telemachus535 жыл бұрын
It may have something to do with fact that the tempo has significantly slowed down. Prob. a fault of the up loader.

Ed, could you kindly tell me how the A theme differs from the B in the scherzo? I can hear no difference. It all sounds like one main theme.
@lvbandmore3 жыл бұрын
The A theme is the small beginning at 27:17. This is followed by 2 B themes at 27:29 & 28:34 which are modulated and expanded versions of the A theme. I suppose it could also be perceived as one long theme section if you like.:)
@NN-df7hl3 жыл бұрын
@@lvbandmore Thanks, Ed! And by "modulated" I guess you mean the B section is in a different key?

This is really good and clear, however for the benefit of trad music theory, it would be great if you could re-label 1st theme etc to 1st subject. I think that what you call the 2nd theme which is in F is part of a dominant prep for the 2nd Subject in Bb (your theme 3) This reappears at 4.03 and that's one of Beethoven's bits of mis-direction because it leads, not to full-on 2nd subject development, but as you rightly say to what might be the first Romantic era fugue. Well music theorists will always disagree, and I know that you are trying to keep things simple.
@makytondr86079 жыл бұрын
+joanna hague I was thinking about that too. Some of the "themes" were rather just "motives", or "subjects", but who cares about the words, MUSIC is the most important thing here and I am pretty sure the author of the video just wanted to make the things simple for everyone ;)
@makytondr86079 жыл бұрын
+joanna hague Also the "fugue" should rather be called a fugato :)

I understand you, but sometimes something can be too dumbed down to the point of being just plain wrong. Mis-interpreting the music, for public purposes or not, is equivalent to pissing on the score and throwing it onto Beethoven's grave. Because this piece is not one to be misinterpreted, mainly because everything is so simple and in front of you, and disregarding it is a sin beyond murder. And from what I can see, this analyst has more urine in him than a camel.

Too fast for you maybe, but not for Beethoven, you know, the man that wrote it..
@stonewallbaron096 жыл бұрын
Natural Selection It is awesome no doubt, and I do enjoy different interpretations. But, that still doesn’t change the fact that Beethoven composed it to be played much faster. We all call Beethoven a great genius, and then virtually everyone ignores his tempos. I think Gardiner nails it, but Furtwängler is a badass for sure
