Unexpected! The masked chorus left me a bit sad, but the overall performance is stellar. The recording quality and the video direction lead me to believe I heard the performance this gifted conductor and orchestra wanted me to hear. The horns in the third movement make their presence known, and the low strings hit the fourth movement with determined joy. The string sections were sweet throughout, especially the violas, who often go unnoticed. The bassoons impressed, as did the timpani and baritone soloist. I will listen again soon!

What an incredible performance and accomplishment by a student orchestra located outside the reaches of our nation's vaunted schools and conservatories of music!! Kudos also to a fine chorus and quartet of soloists. But to conduct an epic work such as Beethoven's Ninth Symphony entirely without a score is a fete unheard of in the annals of concert-going, which , in my view, begs the question: Why is maestro Khudyev situated at a state university rather than on the podium of one of our nation's major orchestras where he should be?
