My thoughts on this one can be summed up by a quote from the late Gene Siskel - ‘I liked it while I was watching it and as soon as it was over, it didn’t mean anything to me.’ A lot of the jokes landed for me on first viewing but the more I think back on the film, the more problems I have with it. The script is way too busy, there’s too many plot threads that don’t go anywhere, Winona Ryder is just playing herself instead of how Lydia was established in the first movie etc. . Something else you I don’t think you mentioned was all the musical sequences. There’s like 5 or 6 different musical sequences in this movie (as opposed to the 2 iconic ones from the original) and it just feels ultra forced. Like they’re trying desperately hard to create the next “Day-O” moment. I wouldn’t call the film outright awful. It has some fun moments. Overall though? Not as good as the original.

I give it a max of 4/10 and being generous. I am no professional critic and many people out there loved this movie, so I guess we are some of the rare ones who did not like this movie even though it made millions and that it was is important for the filmmakers. It was like a Netflix or Tv movie. Winona Ryder was right, Bj and Lydz should have gotten together and gotten married. But why did they make BJ a simp. He wanted to marry Lydia to escape the afterlife, he didn’t care about her he just needed a way out and she wanted a way in, in the first movie. Tim should have rewatched the original and played by the correct story rules. Burton and Lucas just don’t do that and wing it.
@KaiDecadenceАй бұрын
I thought that it was okay. Definitely not as good as the original but the original was like lightning in a bottle situation with how everything fell into place creating for a kooky memorable film. I thought the sequel was okay in the sense that the dark vibe was there and I liked how it still used practical effects for most of it. I thought Lydia's character was alright in the sense that I could see her mellowing out a bit after dealing with her depression in the original. I enjoyed her for what she was but I do understand and even agree that she did feel a little off. I also agree that the plot hole was dumb with where she can see ghosts but can't see her ex-husband and when it was revealed that he worked in the afterlife, for a second it made it understandable but then he drops the "I check in on you two" line and thus opened that hole. It would've been better if they had Lydia lie that she couldn't see him and that could've been the (seen coming) second twist. I honestly though Michael Keaton was great. Yeah he's aged and you can feel that in the sequel but I think he was still able to tap into the character and deliver a fun performance. Catherine O'Hara, I'll admit I did find myself chuckling at a few of her quips and I enjoyed her character but in hindsight, I do see what people are saying now that it didn't really feel like "Delia". I haven't seen Schitt's work so I'm not familiar with the character she plays there but I will concede that it feels like she may have put a little too much kookiness into the character. But despite that, I still enjoyed her. As for Jenna Ortega as Astrid, this is my first time seeing Jenna Ortega act (I haven't watched Wednesday and I haven't seen "You") and to me, the acting just a felt a bit too monotone at times. I haven't seen Wednesday but I heard that's the main shtick she does and it feels like maybe she tried to put her Wednesday role into Astrid and well, it just comes off a bit bland. I know she's the big horror girl of this moment and she might be good in other things but for this character, she was just okay. Honestly the worst part of the movie for me was the ex-wife plot. The idea was interesting and I liked the backstory but the execution in how she was handled through the majority of the movie was horrible. She barely does anything and just when you think there will be a big showdown between her and Beetlejuice, she's taken out in like 20 seconds. Just awful. Also the Soul Train scene, I thought it was cute that it was a little throwback to the show of the same name but I agree that the sequence went on for a little too long. Anyway I do agree that the film had too many plots going on and it really should've stuck with one or two, not like 3-5. My choice would've been the ex-wife plot and had it fleshed out more. But eh, it is what it is. I didn't mind this film, it was okay and after seeing the Crow remake that was just awful, this was a nice refresher, at least for me anyway.
@hardcutreviewsАй бұрын
Appreciate the comment and your measured take on the film. There are good things here like you mentioned. Good practicals, when they are used, and that underworld aesthetic felt like a good continuation from the original. They just needed to stick to a singular plot and put all their eggs into that basket. A tighter story would have really benefited this film. Keaton is obviously great and our criticism is mostly on a script and direction level with his character. Under different circumstances it would have been like he played the original character yesterday. Ortega, whatever. She wasn’t bad, wasn’t great either. We were digging the plot of the ghost boy that she trusted and betrayed her as a nice counter to Lydia befriending ghosts in the original and they are good. Would have been a nice reversal for this film. His wife was not fleshed out enough at all. She pops up for a couple scenes and is completely wasted. Overall a mess but we get we’re in the minority on this one, haha.
@KaiDecadenceАй бұрын
@@hardcutreviews Right, I mean I do like the original film quite a bit and I'd be lying if I said this movie was "fantastic". I agree that had they stuck to one plot, things would've flowed much better. The plot with Astrid and the ghost boy was good and thinking about it, I would scrap the ex-wife plot and save it for the third movie (because it's obvious there will be one lol) and instead, just focus on Astrid and this seemingly friendly ghost boy. Lydia could be trusting at first and through clues dropped, she picks up that the boy isn't who he seems to be which causes an argument with her and Astrid, the story beat continues like the movie we got where the boy tricks Astrid into going to the afterlife and yada yada. Lydia desperately (but reluctantly) enlists Beetlejuice for help. No wedding scene and instead, maybe have the ghost boy manage to get Astrid into that moon of Saturn world and Lydia and Beetlejucie go there to find her and have a showdown with a sandworm. I dunno, it's something haha. They really didn't need two serious plots going on though is al,l, both were interesting ideas but they should've focused on one or the other first though again, the ex-wife plot would've been best served for a finale movie aka the third where more focus can be on Beetlejuice himself. But yeah, it's just that after watching the Crow Remake that I really didn't like, seeing this movie despite it's fault felt like some nice breathing room and I'd rather watch this than sit through Crow 2024 again lol.
@hardcutreviewsАй бұрын
@@KaiDecadence This is 100 times better than The Crow remake despite our problems with it, haha. I guess we were fed up with the potential that was wasted. You could make the case that people really wanted this sequel so there was a lot riding on it and it will be successful. Nobody was expecting The Crow remake to be good.
@KaiDecadenceАй бұрын
@@hardcutreviews That's fair lol Even when it was announced that the Crow was being remade, I think it's safe to say most of us gave a groan of annoyance. And then the trailer dropped and it was the face palm heard around the world lol. When I saw it, I tried to go in with very low expectations and even then, I just felt bored and annoyed. I think what helps with Beetlejucie though is that even the original film didn't take itself too seriously and even though the sequel didn't hit the mark 100%, the effort was there (just needed more thought and maybe one or two final drafts). The spirit was there in and out of places and that makes it serviceable enough as a popcorn flick that you may watch once or twice and be done.

I think Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a great example of one of the biggest issues modern movies have (in addition to the cast needing to be cut down by half): none of the characters have any goals. I read something about when Tim Burton was asked why the Maitlands are not in the sequel. He said the Maitlands are ghosts and that they never age. I felt that was a lame excuse to not at least include Geena Davis since she still looks gorgeous! There's things that could have made this film as much a masterpiece as the first film. But it has these very awkward moments that could be altered to make some scenes work better or removed entirely. The stop motion segment looked like right out of James and the Giant Peach. Cool, but i'm not sure it fits for this movie. No epic Harry Belafonte Shake Shake Senora sequence. I wanted more of Monica Belucci's character but it felt like a whole scene or something got cut in the third act. The stakes were real but then abruptly over. The whole bit with Astrid's father felt unnecessary. It's a very confusing line because it bounces back and forth off of deciding if it wants to be a Beetlejuice sequel or a live action adaption of the cartoon, which is cool too, but you can't make both work in a film. Maybe two films, one where it's buddy co-op and then set up for a selfish hidden agenda in a third film or something. However I think you guys hit the nail on the head in terms of how the first film is a crazy wacky story but told well.

One of the many problems with this film is that the ending opens up for another sequel. Which is very wrong as this film had no real story to begin with, but only several small stories. The only funny parts were with Keaton and he wasn't in it very much. Burton has DEFINITELY lost a lot of his past skill. During the last scene, when they realize that O'Hara had actually died, no biggie! The snakes had fangs, right? Oh well, c-ya! Really? So she was fighting to not be dead and then suddenly she was okay with it, and her daughter and granddaughter realize she's dead and being taken to the afterlife but, "meh, oh well." The film was all over the place, reminding me of an old Chinese Kung-Fu film that couldn't make up its mind if it wanted to be a drama, tragedy, slapstick, farce, or action film. I was really excited to see it, hoping for something GOOD -- which hasn't happened often in recent years -- but it left me sighing. Oh well.

@harmonynelson2141Ай бұрын
The sequel should've been primarily focused on the story between Astrid and the ghost boy. That was the only aspect that felt interesting and dangerous . They should've drawn that out a lot more. Lead the audience to ship this couple and then shock us, not because he was a ghost (which was obvious), but because he turns out to be an evil ghost. All the shit with Justin Theoraux and Monica Belucci had no bearing on anything. Completely unnecessary characters. Delia Deetz, needed to be there, but yeah, maybe with more character development? I dunno. They could've kept the dead dad plot, but gave it more stakes in the resolution. The disco music though-line was meant to echo the calypso music though-line of the original, but it made no sense. In the original, the Maitlands listen to Harry Belafonte in the first scene. They were fans. Why the diso music in the sequel?

I thought "the soul train" was just a silly little dated joke by Beetlejuice but it ended up being a dated joke by the filmmakers. Didn't fit in at all. It was also a runtime padding dance interlude like that waste of an ending. We waited 30 years to finally see this guy again and we are wasting his limited screen time on him lip syncing?

Ok, I'm only half way through the review, but have to say... finally! Finally someone fucking says it. Catherine O'Hara 100% was Moira Rose, NOT Delia! I've watched review after review waiting for someone to point that out and no one has even once said it. She completely changed her charecter. I live her to death in Shitt's Creek but that was not Delia! Reminded me of how in Scream 3 and all the other following movies Courtney Cox basically started to turn Gale Weathers into Monica Geller. She was never cooky in the first two, then all of a sudden she's like a total Wreck and joke of a person. I hate when they do that! Sorry, rant over but I was so happy you guys felt the same way. You nailed this review! Just found you guys, but I can't wait to see all your other reviews now!
@hardcutreviewsАй бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Yeah, love Catherine O’Hara. She’s amazing in Schitt’s Creek. But it felt like she just continued playing Moira with a little less of that custom dialect. Didn’t feel like her Beetlejuice character. Apparently we’re just haters for noticing these things. Oh well, lol.

I think that there is a good movie in there, if you remove the other 2 (or 3?) movies they crammed in. I was sufficiently entertained for the $6 to watch this trip through nostalgia. Jenna Ortega was far above and beyond the worst thing about the film. Some producers saw Wednesday and thought that she could do anything. Turns out, she's only proficient at being Wednesday.

If this movie had stuck with one plot it would have been better. The first film focused on Lydia befriending ghosts who helped her grow. This film could have been about her daughter befriending a ghost who wanted to do the opposite and hurt her. Missed opportunities.

I figured it would be this much. The original film had a certain edgy raunch too it that they could never get away with in today's woke feminist Hollywood.
@mollygrace3068Ай бұрын
This isn’t a woke feminist thing. Every beloved villain goes through the neutering process. The audience loves him, so they want to see more of him and they want to see him win. At spine point he’ll team up with the heroes and become a good guy.

I was wondering when the this review was gonna drop, knew you guys would take a massive dump on this. I too was "meh" going in. And as a huge fan of the first I didn't even care about a sequel which says allot. Went to go see it Monday afternoon and got home, cracked a beer (I snuck 2 into the theatre) popped in the original (on vhs) wrote up some points and shot a equally angry review on this.. Funny folks who like this movie just say "no it was good". BUT WHY? Why was it good, people who says it's good don't give any reasons why. I think people are just fine with mediocre movies these days, but mediocre from good film makers just doesn't cut it, especially with huge budgets. Not even sure this is mediocre, maybe less than. Enjoyed this review boys, cheers. Oh yeah the only good character in this was the Priest, give him more screen time and lines!

You can always spot the zoomer in the crowd because of their inability to laugh at themselves. You want to talk about holier than thou? You can drop as many stereotypes about millennials and Gen X’ers all you like. We won’t care because they’re probably true. As soon as this generation finds a little humility we’ll ease up on them.

@TigahStrosАй бұрын
Why are you guys giving the actors all the credit for their portrayals of the characters and who they turned into? That blame falls flatly at the feet of Tim Burton only.
@hardcutreviewsАй бұрын
They get all the credit when they do a good job. It’s suddenly all of the directors fault when they suck? There is only so much Burton can pull out of an actor. If it’s not in them anymore it’s not in them. Burton certainly shoulders a lot of them blame but Keaton fell back into the role no problem, Burton gets 100% of the credit?

This movie was not good. I really didnt appreciate the absence of the maitlands. That's a huge one for me. The maitlands were the emotional through-line of the original. We were seeing the movie from their perspective because they were basically playing the straight man. So they plucked the main characters from the sequel and we're left with the crazy side characters that no one can relate to. It was too weird. I agree with Winona rider in regard to lydia most likely wouldn't have had kids. I dont like jenna Ortega and shes once again infected another ip I adored. The character of beetlejuice doesnt need to be expanded upon. I dont want to see him working in an office. That's pretty ridiculous. There were way too many characters and too many plot lines converging all at once felt unnatural and forced. Michael Keatons performance was very sedate. Not once did I see him light or smoke a cigarette. He constantly kept the timbre of his voice really low where as the original his tone and inflections were all over the place. In the original film he would flip from calm to manic in the same sentence. What they did with Charles Deetz character was detestable. Either have jeffrey jones reprise his role or dont have that character in the film. It's that simple. Also beetlejuice appears when you say his name three times, so why was delores having such a hard time finding him when she had already said his name more than three times. Wheres beetlejuice?! Wheres beetlejuice?! Wheres beetlejuice?! That was pretty stupid and bad writing imo. There was one shrunken head guy in the first movie but the burnt up smoker guy was more interesting, so we now have a race of shrunken head dudes? That doesnt make any sense. Also how did beetlejuice get his head unshrunk from the first movie? I wanted to see how lydia grew up having two sets of parents. Being raised by ghosts would have been very interesting. It would have also been cool to see how lydia helped adam and Barbara cross over. And mcarthur park playing at the end? I've always hated that song. It's almost like every move this movie made was deliberately designed to annoy fans of the original film. I personally feel like I've been slapped in the face.
