This is one of my favorite comedy fantasy horror films Originally, this was going to be a dark horror film. It's revealed in the first draft of the script, where Beetlejuice was going to be played by Sammy Davis Jr, (Dudley Moore and Sam Kinison were considered) and he was going to be a shapeshifting demon, whom takes the form of several creatures like a leprechaun, a demonic Santa Claus, a short Middle Eastern man presumably a genie,, a winged dragon, and a giant rabid squirrel, whom would try and rape Lydia after killing her sister Cathy, after she befriended the ghosts, Adam and Barbara. The Deetz family and the Maitland's then perform an exorcism to send Beetlejuice back to hell. The Maitland's then live in a miniaturized version of their house, Cathy is brought back to life, and the Deetz family return to New York.

I absolutely LOVE this movie. I've lost count how many times I've watched it, but it never gets old for me. I identify with Lydia so much. "I, myself, am strange and unusual." Yes girl. Yes. Especially when I was younger, but even now. I'm almost 50 now but I still feel like I don't fit in with most of the people I know because I like weird things, dark humor, rainy days, scary movies, ghost hunting, etc. When I really geek out about the things I like, I get some strange looks from people. LOL It's okay though. I like my strangeness and I have people in my life that can appreciate it even if it's not their style. So glad you enjoyed this one so much. A classic for sure! And, yes, I think you should do more Tim Burton movies whenever you can.

A great story from the making of is that at one point the executives suggested changing the name of the film to "House Ghosts". Tim Burton, recognizing how dumb and generic that was, derisively countered that they may as well call it "Scared Sheetless". When the execs seemed to actually consider that one, he threatened to jump out the window if they dared go through with it. Thus, the film remained "Beetlejuice".

Geena Davis plays Barbara Maitland. That was a reference to The Fly. Geena co-starred in the late 80s remake with Jeff Goldblum, who she was married to at the time. She has some great movies like A League of Their Own, Thelma & Louise (with Susan Sarandon as her co-star & Brad Pitt's first movie), The Long Kiss Goodnight (with Samuel L. Jackson), Earth Girls Are Easy (another with Jeff Goldblum, and also Jim Carrey, & Damon Wayans), and Stuart Little. Catherine O'Hara (Delia) you might know from being the mom in the first two Home Alone movies & Schitt's Creek.

There was a cartoon to Beetlejuice as well. Though it is very different from the movie. Adam and Barbara are never mentioned and it mainly focuses on Lydia and Betelgeuse adventuring around in the afterlife. Lydia is alive it's she just hangs out with him as they are friends in the cartoon. The art was pretty stylized and the opening is really good and the character just adapts well to animation with the crazy stuff he does.

Was almost called "House Ghost" and it was originally a straight up horror movie.. before things changed. Otho said during dinner, "You know what they say about people who commit suicide.. in the afterlife, they become civil servants!" and in this movie it's very true. Everyone at the help center who is working killed themselves. The lady at the reception desk, cut her wrists. the 'flat guy' threw himself in front of some large vehicle, Juno their case worker cut her own throat... you can also pick up on subtle details on subsequent viewings of other things in the after life help center.

The year this movie came out, I had to have seen it 10 times in the theaters, it's a movie with sooo much going on in the background you might miss it the first time watching. In the scene where Barbara and Adam are talking over Charles while he sits with his feet up reading a magazine, subscriber cards fall out of the magazine, and every time he turns a page, more fall out, it never ends. In the scene in Juno's office with the football players, there's a mirror behind Juno, and reflected in it, you see what looks like a theater audience of dead people, skeletons, etc., which is supposed to be a reflection of the audience watching the movie, in the Beetlejuice world. There's just endless Easter eggs in this one. If you haven't seen it, Pee-wee's Big Adventure was Tim Burton's first full length studio film, it's where he first started working with Danny Elfman, and it's also just as unique as Beetlejuice is, it's definitely worth a watch.

Why the Maitlands didn't move on isn't addressed directly in the movie, as if ghosts in this world don't need the "unfinished business" thing to stick around. But my theory is they wanted children but couldn't have them. Jane made a remark about their house being too big for a couple with no kids. I also think that's why it's so lovely that they befriended Lydia.

I was waiting with bated breath for twenty minutes and it was worth it. I just knew you were going to love Harry Belafonte providing the music for the dinner party (it's my favorite scene in the movie). And, to answer the earlier question just in case you drop back this far, yes the movie was scored by Danny Elfman who also provides the vocals on the soundtrack version of "The Banana Boat Song (A.K.A. Day-o)" for the title card.

If you are looking for movie you can find Michael Keaton in, check out Much Ado About Nothing There are a number of familiar faces in this version, and the rhythm of their speaking their lines made it all natural. Keaton is Not one of the leads, but his portrayal of a local sherif was so funny, that I half thought that unofficially that could have been where Beetlegeuse came from Much Ado About Nothing. ( 1993 ) Directed by Kenneth Branagh Cast members off the top of my head: Kenneth Branagh Emma Thompson Denzel Washington Michael Keaton Keanu Reeves Kate Beckinsale

I am a big fan of beetlejuice. This movie is great and spawned an amazing franchise with a cartoon show and a Broadway musical both of which I highly recommend too. Great reaction. My favorites are- sweeney todd, beetlejuice, nightmare before christmas, corpse bride, and Charlie and the chocolate factory.

Based on your comment about never having seen Alec Baldwin this young, I'm guessing you have never seen Hunt for The Red October? It is good! Michael Keaton's performance as Beetlejuice is more similar than I realised to his performance as Dogberry in Much Ado About Nothing. You don't know who Geena Davis is!?! She's in films like; Thelma and Louise, A League of Their Own, The Long Kiss Goodnight.

I’m so glad you liked this movie! I always thought it would be so much fun to do a play version of this film. The practical effects would be lacking but that dinner scene and the seance would be so cool to see and perform live. I hope you do get to check out sleepy hollow and Mars attacks, both are so good! Ed wood is great too!

12:30 I think he meant when he was alive, but was too late of course. 25:49 He tried to perform a seance, but accidentally perform an exorcism. But you're right, he should have researched more.

No, he said "I'm trying to" meaning currently. The joke, obviously, is that he is clearly burnt to a crisp from a fire that was quite possibly from falling asleep with a lit cigarette or some other carelessness involving a cigarette.

This movie came out when I was a kid and I had the action figure of Beetlejuice in the striped suit. It came with the little hat with the mobile dangling and the blow up hammer hands. In retrospect it is the most bizarre toy I owned, but I guess the fact that the toys existed-and that I remember them-says how big this movie was for kids when it came out.

That was the perfect video to watch during lunch break. Thanks. :) I remember when my sister and me were still kids, my dad wanted the whole family to watch that movie but somehow he never managed to convince us (my mum is not into fantasy anyway). It turned into a running gag. Whenever we discussed what to watch on our weekly movie night, my dad said "Beetlejuice!" and we all said in unison "Noooo....". I don't know why I didn't like it back then. But I think, I will watch now as soon as possible.
