With bigger wings, the boat should be able to get on plane quicker. The trade off would be a lower top speed from the increased resistance. There might be a way to improve efficiency with slight modification to the leading edge of the wings. Play around with some different designs to see what works best.

Awesome idea. What if you close the underside so the wind tunnel works better with let turbulence?
@hydrofin2 жыл бұрын
This is a good idea. We have that done on our demo boat.
@ctom49322 жыл бұрын
That's a neat device. What's the speed change? Getting reduced fuel consumption for the distance covered? View of acceleration from underneath without it installed? All that splashing and spraying of the underside, is that a plywood floor? Some paper thin aluminum sheets to block it would lengthen the floors life.

I never seen an 18' pontoon boat with a 60hp Mercury go as fast as yours does without the hydrofin. With the hydrofin it looks like it took a long time for it to get on the plane and get up to speed. I have a 20' Sun Tracker with a 70hp Evinrude and it will only go about 25mph with only me in the boat. I had thought about getting the hydrofin but it would be almost as cheep to trade for a tritoon.
@rickhale43482 жыл бұрын
Surely it's not that expensive. There isn't that much to it material wise. Even with servos to adjust the plane it wouldn't be that much.

Kind've curious what that would look like if you were to run aground or hit stump/log ect. Is the boat's pontoons going to be ripped open when the fins catch or dig in? Not a bash or jab just genuinely curious how they would hold up in an incident of that nature.
@hydrofin Жыл бұрын
Hey David. Great question. We’ve got hundreds of these foils installed on boats around the country, in Canada, and Australia. Out of all of those, we’ve had about 5 people hit submerged objects at cruising speed (between 20-30mph) and none caused damage to the boat or required replacement parts from Hydrofin. The entire system was engineered for strength and durability but will break off if the loads exceed 2,500 lbs at the tips of the foils. This is to protect the integrity of the boat since the foils can be easily replaced. I hope this helps.

Hey Darin, you should not have to change the position your motor is mounted. Weight distribution will have some effect but you will be able to find the "sweet spot" with your trim as people and weight move around the boat.

What a great idea! The most surprising thing I noticed was the plywood construction of the hull between the pontoons. Really?
@Clutch_Kick187 Жыл бұрын
Most all pontoons are marine grade plywood floors.. Mine is 20yrs old and looks like new.. And my boat sits on the water 5 months a year before being stored on the trailer in a garage.. They don't rot unless you let it sit in with water on it for long periods of time..

Each pontoon has different chambers
@charliejohnson54582 жыл бұрын
@@TG-ln8iz i know that. My concern is what it adds to the draft when the boat isnt moving. I love the idea and wish it was possible to get, but we have a fishing pontoon boat and would probably get damaged pretty quick by a stump or sand bar you cannot see.
@hydrofin2 жыл бұрын
On most installs the wings will draft only 2-4 inches below the boat. Your motor will be much deeper in the water. The system is designed to withstand a fairly substantial impact, but at the same time has fail points to ensure no damage will be done to your boat in a worst case scenario.

With the front lifted up like that I'd say a sudden strong head wind could be a problem. Likely flipping the boat. Not a criticism but just an observation. Very nice and I bet the ride was much improved. You don't have to go very fast to feel it on water.
@alexnutcasio9362 жыл бұрын
Oh please, it’s going to take a lot more than that to flip the boat…..
@rickhale43482 жыл бұрын
Actually not. The hydrofoil effect lifts the boat and a strong wind at the correct angle could do the job. The boat is already exposing much of it's surface are. I've had wind do a number on a boat off the coast of Florida. It's just speculation and caution.

@Simonvawt2 жыл бұрын
Hi Chad, I don’t work for Hydrofin but, I can provide a rough estimate for you. A 20’ pontoon with a 90hp engine could see 19 to 20 mph depending on your setup. With the Hydrofin system installed you could see 28 to 29 mph. Again, this just a rough estimate. Your boat will also handle and ride much better. I encourage you to call or email Jason. I’ve talked to him personally and he’s a really great guy. His team has also made several other videos that cover a lot of details and customer reviews and testimonials. Hope this helps.

@Simonvawt2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dan, If you visit the channel and watch some of the other videos, Jason provides loads of statistics on fuel savings and speed improvement. He also has buyer reviews and testimonials. The system is a little over $4K with installation and it takes 7 to 8 hours to install. I think one point that Jason may not stress enough is the handling. Based on the testimonials, this makes a pontoon handle like a tritoon without the added weight and less cost. I have a pontoon that is maxed out at 115 on rated HP. My boat tops out at 25 mph with just me and a full tank on board. (When) I get Jason’s hydrofin system installed, I will be able to hit 35 mph. I hope this helps.
