This is the "Before" and "After" videos of my speech before and after my 2 weeks at the Hollins Communication Research Institute in Roanoke, Virginia. I'm 30 years old and have stuttered all of my life. After 25 years of Speech Therapy, I took 2 weeks of my life and traveled to the east coast to the HCRI. I figured I would get some basic tools to help me with my fluency ... what I got was a life-changing experience. Now, I'm not cured of my stutter by any means. I'm going to always be a stutterer. But I gained invaluable confidence and the right tools that, combined with hard work, will make me a fluent speaker for the rest of my life. The results speak for themselves.

Hey Everyone! Thanks you SO much for all of the kind words. It's been about a year since I went out to HCRI. The effects of the therapy are still present, no doubt. Have I had tough moments? Sure. I've had periods where I haven't practiced as much as I should have, but I'm quick to get right back on track. The tools I learned have still proven to be VERY effective. All it takes it constant, constant practice. And not just practice ... CORRECT practice. Keep working hard, everyone!

I am so impressed by his changes and can't believe it changes in a matter of 12 day. I am so proud of you Derek and knowing you for about 4-5 yrs ago till now. I can see the changes and think that you have inspired me more because of you doing this and the progress you have made.

Thanks for the kind words. I'll definitely post another video after some time has passed. Controlling the fluency is still a day-to-day process, working on making the fluency skills stronger and more permanent, more habitual. Constant practice ... correct practice ... is the key! I'm far from perfect, but getting better, with more confidence, daily!

I'm so proud of you!! We overcoming with our stutter. We can really do it. I used to stutter too from Elementary to Jr. High but I stutter from time to time. Everybody told me "Take a breath when you talk" and everything gonna be fine. I speak normal but only thing i have trouble with pronounce words with three syllable or more.

Good on you Derek. At least you were spared the terrible 'secondaries' that some of the rest of us experience. Please post another Vid in three or four months' time so that we can see that the Hollins 'event' is long-lasting. Cheers, Simon from the UK

Congrats Derek! I'm glad it worked for you!! I've heard that HRCI may not work on some and its quite expensive and its a 2 week process.

I did exactly the same thing in Toronto last year. The result is not so obvious to me, and I think maybe I did not do enough work. I am so glad the person in the video makes so much progress. Stuttering and lack of confidence are really big problems to me. I lost chances and had a extremely tough time in the university. I have much fear to ask a question and talk with other people. I cannot do well in my internship interview. People surround me differently. Everything is really a nightmare.

Derek is in control for his speech! This is the key! However, could you, please, explain to me why did it take 12 days to obtain such control? What were the activities that he had to participate in for such a long period of time? The ETALON speech education program teaches correct speaking skills in just 3 days!

I had this problem. thankfully it has gotten better but it's one of the worst thing ever. It's like you wanna say the word but your mouth won't let it come out. my parent thought I was dumb and stupid worse feeling ever. or kids making fun of you and copying you. life is hard. really hard

Anna, So sorry to hear that you did not benefit.Though, it is important to share that the Toronto program you attended is NOT part of HCRI - and is a separate and different therapy. HCRI's treatment is one-of-a-kind - and is only administered in Roanoke, VIrginia at HCRI's clinical center. If you'd like to learn a bit more, please visit stuttering[dot]org. In the meantime, I wish you the best with your fluency.
