It's a lesser-known chapter of American history, but the Mendez v. Westminister case helped end school desegregation in California and paved the way for Brown v. Board of Ed. Here's how the Orange County city is honoring Sylvia Mendez, who is now in her 80s but was a little girl when she found herself at the center of the storm. abc7.com/mendez-v-westminster...

Also many people don't realize that Perez vs Sharp which was a precedent for overturning anti-miscegenation laws involved a Mexican American and African American couple in California.

Sounds racially motivated 2:00 It doesn't matter who was first but it seems thats all the Hispanics care about.

I’m Hispanic but caught that too. That comment wasn’t needed at all. Just speaks to the ignorance that pervades in this country. 75yrs and still no change. Look at the comment section. For some reason certain people believe we are all in a competition to reach this “better place” and that this “better place” can only be dominated by one race. We can all live in the “better place” And the only way to get there is through community.

An ignorant statement to make. It is extremely important to make that comment. This kind of history is always overlooked because it doesn’t fit a certain narrative. People learn about brown v boe so it’s only fair they learn a case that came before it. If that upsets you in any way then you are obviously not able to value the struggles that cultures outside of your own have faced. But with the way you speak about “Hispanics” you clearly have prejudices that are part of bigger problem surrounding minorities. She isn’t minimizing other cases she is just trying to bring attention to one she experienced and I really hope you end up seeing that.

@@luckydoginc4616 “doesn’t fit a certain narrative” you missed the point. This isn’t a race. Oppression is oppression. Everyone knows Brown because it made it into history books and obviously more attention the fact that this case took place first is only important in the fact that it’s sad that two cases had to be litigated over tax paying citizens trying to provide equal education for their children which they were entitled to under the law. If you need it more simplified they were paying for a service that was being delivered at sub par standards in comparison to other citizens of the same stature but different skin color. It doesn’t matter which came first just that they are both notarized and given equal credit which this monument is trying to accomplish but making an emphasis on this one occurred first so it somehow outweighs Brown is just immature.

@@peatyxxjxxx1494 never said it was a race first of all. Shes obviously pointing it out because its not as know which i think is fair. She wants this case to be taught in schools which i also think is fair. What it sounds like is that people dont want this case acknowledged at all based on both your tones. I never once discredited brown vs boe but it seems like thats what you read. Shes excited that this case is getting a monument and shes taking an opportunity to state that it happened before brown vs boe. Where does she say that she wants that history ignored or erased? Try not to read into things with a negative mindset. If it was the other way around i would hope that people would be supportive. Side note: what is immature is the way the op speaks about "hispanics". He clearly has prejudices that I wouldnt be defending. But if you have the same closeminded thoughts then i dont see the point in responding to you again. Peace.

@@luckydoginc4616 thanks for letting me know I made a point. You are obviously upset that I read into your comment and exposed the truth in its meaning and your hidden Bias. The op and I are seeing the hidden racism in the comment and no she is not simply happy this case is finally getting recognition she wants it taught that this occurred first. The fact that it occurred first is only important under the context that you believe there is some hidden agenda that Hispanic issues some get a second priority to black issues. This is the mentality that the recent LA city council leaders had and got exposed. If we want real progress we need to throw this us vs then out the window. This case probably didn’t get as much recognition due to the conservative enclave that it occurred in. Conservatives don’t like revisiting the past and just want people to get over things. That’s were your blame should lie in why this case is not widely known.
