Before Renault Magnum - Virages VE10 + AE/Ligne11 picture from old magazines '80/'90s

Some rare photos from my collections of magazines from the 80/ 90's + couple fabric photos (VE10) ,but used by editorial offices of many newspapers and magazines.
I chose the truck pictures in fabric livery for demo/show ,test or commercial.
All photos after my own computer processing for better quality.
In the right corner of the publication year the photos.
Video show way to birth legendary Renault Magnum truck.
First (from 1981) there was a program called "VIRAGES" * , with built and tested in 1985 Renault VE10 ** .
After fabric tests , in years 1986-87 he made a journalist tour around Europe.
Second program called "Ligne 11" (from 1982) ended main phase in spring 1987 ,when pre-production of new trucks starts .
Public premiere trucks from Ligne program takes place in may 1990 as Renault AE ***.
On the video most Renault AE photos from may-june 1990 - trucks still have French black test license plates.

Many people have a big problem with the name this truck: The first (05.1990) official name of the new Renault truck was "AE" or "AE Integrale" (with cab name) , but in brochures and documents released before the premiere the name "Ligne AE" was used. In autumn 1992, the name was changed to "AE Magnum" ,because the name of the luxurious option "Magnum" * has become more popular for the whole truck than "AE". In mid 1997 ,the name changed to "Magnum Integral" , from 2000 "Magnum E-Tech" . In 2001 ("new" cab) the name was continued. --------- "Magnum" option included : on board computer , refrigerator , central door lock. ,electrically tilting cab and more "Magnum Prestige" : leather seat , lunch table and TV - yes , from may 1990 !

Great video! I have a question: I've come across drawings of a Renault AE tandem axle tractor, equipped with super single rear tires - similar to the setup of the Virages concept. Did any of those make it into production?

Yes ,in years 1990 - 96 : Renault AE 6x4 LSW = "Light Single Wheels" .It was the same formula like in Virages with two axle drive , six single wheels and only 315/80R22,5 tire .None 385/65 ! "Light" because it was version for normal loads (high axle ratio) ,but with good tractions for tractor ,not for heavy loads as classic 6x4 with double tire and low rear axle ratio. On "autoline" page I often found that LSW tractor for sale. Ofcourse sometimes second or third owner add 4 tire more ,but this is not a sensible idea ,because the tractor had a "soft" suspension not so good for heavy loads.

Thanks for your quick reply. So these were not especially wide tires, as I thought at first ... As you mentioned a "soft suspension" type: Were these tractors equipped with a tandem axle/leaf springs - or is it possible that the two rear axles were suspended via trailing arms/air bellows, independently? Very interesting topic, unfortunately not many of the early AE's/Magnums are around anymore. Probably almost all of those LSW models have been scrapped by now , as I've never come across any pictues of used ones ... Regards

You know what's best ? I've seen that very truck some time ago, out of storage. I work for the company and I didn't even know that one was there. It was very cool to see it, it's like a time capsule, back in the 80's instantly !

i drove an AE 380 with the auto TBV gearbox. these trucks were an amazing truck cab design and huge inside. i wish my volvo globetrotter xl i drive to was more on the size of renault.

Your Videos are all great and ecxellent. Gives me a Remember of the old times from trucking. It was a phantastic Time wich i never will miss and your Videos tell the Story. Many long Drives to far Targets meeting phantastic older Kolleges with lots of Experience,sitting together have lots of fun during waiting times.
