What is the link between collective memory and identity?

Good question! It depends a bit on what level of identity you are talking about. Identity could be understood as either an individual sense of self, or a larger body of people - think labels or communities (gamers, metalheads etc). If we are talking about an individual identity i see the link as this: The individual gets their sense of identity by a narrative understanding of themselves in relation to their surroundings. This narrative is based on their own organic memory, as well as their historic understanding of the world around them. Collective memory is the vault of knowledge and understanding interpretations of the world, that the individual judges themselves against. For identity on a larger scale, the collective memory of a community is the agreed upon narrative about the world. The narrative is bargained over by the individuals, and when more or less settled, it becomes the background with which the community understands there place in the world/their identity. I hope this makes sense (:

How would you say the connection between collective memory and a language (as in safe language being spoken, but the endangered language being forgotten )
@politracks18103 жыл бұрын
Interesting question! The way that language is a central part of a communities shared identity means that it is an integral part of the culture. This also means that it is part of that community's collective memory, and the fundamental tool through which it understands reality, so it is one the most central parts of the way that memory is constructed. Therefore, an endangered language can represent an entirely different memory than the dominant one, and losing that language could result in the history of that collective being erased or at the very least modified to fit the version of history supported by the dominant language/culture/collective. Hope this makes sense!
