I saved the empty Honda container of oil and just refill it with bulk 5W-30 synthetic. It makes measuring the oil a no brainer. I hope you have better luck with your Honda mower than I did with mine. My Honda was nothing but trouble and after three seasons of battling with a poor cut, broken wheels, worn out bearings, and a cracked deck, II switched to a Toro 4 years ago and I’ve had zero trouble since. I was very leery of the Toro due to the Briggs & Stratton engine, but I have to say it’s been bulletproof. By the way, I did exactly what you did except I change the oil after the first cut, approximately 35 minutes for my yard and then again after the 10th cut, approximately five hours on the engine. I then change the oil midseason and at the end of the season before storage and all of my equipment. before storage it also gets a fresh spark plug and air filter and then is allowed to run into all the fuel is out of the system and the engine dies

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve had to explain this to customers and reps and sales people, but here it is in hopes it will help alleviate the stress levels some of you are experiencing: The oil in your new engine is turning dark because carbon and unburned petroleum components are blowing past the piston rings and down into the crankcase. The rings haven’t formed and finalized their wear pattern yet, (known as “seating”). These contaminants are soft and pose no threat to the engine. Also, using non- ethanol gasoline actually contributes to the harmless oil darkening as it lacks the chemicals which promote a cleaner combustion burn. The metal particles are also completely harmless as long as you maintain the correct oil level for your engine and do not operate it at an extreme angle to it’s center axis design, particularly so if it’s a non-pressurized oiling system. These metal particles are of the exact same hardness as the metal components they are shed from, meaning they do not posses any greater abrasive qualities, and further more are suspended in and completely surrounded by lubricant. Prematurely changing the initial oil in a brand new or overhauled engine will only prolong the break in period, and in worse case scenario will prevent the piston rings from fully seating to design specifications. The results of course are reduced compression values and higher than normal oil consumption, leading to reduced power and shorter life span of the engine. I do not recommend synthetic oils in these small engines; Today’s manufacturing processes yield extremely durable surfaces and require nothing more than the recommended viscosity mineral / petroleum based oil. It is only under very extreme operating temperatures, engine load values, and oil change intervals that I would consider synthetic oil. Hopefully this will ease your minds the next time you grab the pull cord.

My previous Honda mower lasted over 21 years on the first oil fill. Never changed it. Not once. It's just a mower. The engine was still running fine. Only replaced the mower because the deck was rusting out, self drive was wearing out and the plastic fuel tank developed a leak.

I purchased a Honda HRX217 last summer and did the initial break in for 25 minutes then changed the oil. The oil was as dark as in your video and I changed it again after about 1 hour of use as it was a little grey. After that, the oil remained clear for the rest of the summer. That tells me that my engine does not lose anymore metal due to friction. So THE INITIAL BREAK IN IS A MUST and I know it will run for many years like new. Thanks to YOU!

I got a HRN216VKA yesterday to replace my craftsman mower that died. I never owned a self-prepared mower before so i wanted to see what other people's experiences were. Glad I found this video. I did the initial fill of oil, ran for 20 min then drained it. The oil was defiantly blackened, and there was "stuff" in it, but i didn't have any clear containers to inspect the used oil. The only other thing i would add to this video @215 would be to use a fuel stabilizer with the gasoline you have "sitting" in a storage can.

Great video! I’ve always changed oils early as well and you did a great job showing why important! A whole new conversation is engine oil type used in small engines. Modern vehicle engine oil has less additives to prevent engine wear due to emission components. There are engine oils on the market specifically formulated for small engines that lack the emissions components. These oils have much more friction additives. Take a look at Amsoil small engine oils for details. Might make a great video in the future! Cheers.

I thought the small amount of oil that came in the new mower was a break-in oil with additives to help the rings seat properly. I would imagine those additives need to be in the engine more than 20 minutes to work properly. I'm also of the mindset that the engineers who designed these engines probably have plenty of test data to support their 5 hour break-in recommendation.

I agree with changing the oil right away to flush out metal debris and assembly byproducts. Honda doesn't make a full synthetic small engine motor oil. Normally it's not a good idea to switch to a full synthetic so quickly. You need to allow for the piston rings to properly seat into the cylinder walls unless the cylinder walls were specifically bored and honed for synthetic oil break in. Will end up with the rings never properly sealing and you get blow by.

@@em4703 Watch some videos on Evo 4g63 and STi EJ25 motor builds for reference. You go with full synthetic right away the piston rings will not seat into the cylinder walls properly and you will get blow-by. We are talking single cylinder lawn mower engines, but I'm more from a high performance engine background. Honda still only sells non-synthetic oil for their lawn mowers because that is how the motor is designed by Honda engineers.

I use Mobile one full synthetic not the Walmart brand, just bought a new Honda lawnmower, I also use Lucas oil and fuel, and in the oil crank case in my vehicles and my other lawnmoweris how do you feel about the oil and have you tried it in any of the Honda mowers? It definitely helps break in and long life and longevity. Today’s answer to slick 50.

Thanks a lot. I’ve been using Lucas oil in with my full synthetic for years and it has been excellent. I don’t use super tech oil. I always ask where my oil is manufactured at because I absolutely refused to use Pennzoil of any kind or anybody or manufacturer oil for it causes major breakdowns, and failures. Are use Valvoline full synthetic , Mobile 1 full synthetic, I used to use Royal Purple full synthetic, but it is sometimes hard to come by. Those are the only oils that I will use no matter what after time spent racing Overland and motocross, and driving a semi full-time OTR.

ok so first might i suggest decaf...lol just kidding. good info and good delivery of info. makes it worth watching. I know that the term best oil is kinda like best car brand or whatever but just to throw it out there i would recommend after break in to change the oil and either use Amsoil or Alisyn pro drive both in 10/30. In my research at least those 2 oils offer the best protection money can buy with Alisyn edging out Amsoil in my opinion. just a thought.

When auto restorer mechanics get a new expensive crate engine, I noted that they use a special engine oil just made for the break in. Sometimes the special break in oil comes with the engine. I am guessing that it is not as slippery??? If I am correct, and also being frugal, it may be better to use a decent, less expensive conventional engine oil, for the break in period. More of a break in, and less expensive. Then switch to the 5W30 full synthetic. My snowblower calls for 0W30 but that isn't usually on the shelves; not a good quality one anyway; not in these parts. My small inverter generator and my snowblower both need to be able to run in cold weather, so 5W30 Full Synthetic is perfect for both. Can be run in hot weather as well. I used a good quality conventional 5W30 oil for my break in of both machines, then switched to 5W30 Full Synthetic(same brand). At the very least, I saved some money on the break in. I may also have gotten a slightly better break in, where conventional oil isn't quite as slippery. That's the theory anyway. I still have quality conventional engine oils in my older summer machines. SAE 30, or 10W30. I don't mow, or till in winter ;-) Wood splitter, Dad's, gets 10W30 conventional, because it does get used in spring and fall, which can be cold. If this were my machine, it would have full synthetic 5W30 in it...and high test gas with conditioner, etc......I just get to fix it :-(

A couple of things I would like to mention here..........I also agree with the break in start up, but there is one very important thing you should do before you fire it up; 1: disconnect the spark plug wire and crank it over by hand quite a few times to get the parts well lubricated before putting it under its own power. 2: Instead of using a strap wrench to keep the blade and engine power engaged, use a simple spring loaded clamp. I've been using a spring loaded clamp for many years on my vintage Honda HRS21 mower and it works great!!!! But other than that..........keep up the great video content and information.

I just bought a Honda HRN216VKAA/B about 4 weeks ago from a local Honda/Yamaha dealer. My previous mower was a Craftsman deck with Honda engine for 20 years. Loved the Honda engine. The mower came assembled and ready to run. I did the first oil change after 30 minutes. Saw your video and put in Super Tech Advanced Full Synthetic 5W-30. Have mowed twice with the synthetic oil. I wrote to Honda about using the synthetic oil in their engine. Honda wrote back and said "No, please use the recommended oil. Honda engines are developed, tested, and certified with petroleum-based motor oils as a lubricant. Any motor oil used in our engines must meet or exceed all oil requirements as stated in the owner's manual to include the recommended oil change intervals." NOW I am really worried. I want my Honda to run the best and last. After 5 hours of use, do I go back to conventional 10W-30 motor oil or stay with the Super Tech Advanced Full Synthetic 5W-30? My mantra is to run the first Dino oil fill for the first "heat cycle", about 15-20 minutes. Then still using the cheaper regular oil I will change again at about an hour. Since the regular oil is WAY cheaper than your engine, (~$2.50 per change), you really cannot change the oil too frequently in the first few hours of use, ESPECIALLY with a splash lubrication system. The higher HP engines usually have a pressurized oil system with a filter that should catch the particulates during break in, but, for a splash system 2,3,4 or more oil changes will be better in removing most/all of the sparkles. Additionally, I would still use the regular oil for at least the first 25-50 hours or so to give the engine adequate running time to break in BEFORE using a Full synthetic....

He told me that small engines work best with 5w30 full synthetic. Ever since he told me that years ago that's what Ive been using. The amazon brand is actually very fluid at cold temperatures. After almost 15 years with a top of the line Honda mower and not a single repair needed decided to purchase a new one before they stop production. Not so good luck with the new one, out of the box defective. The compression release mechanism is not working making it very difficult to start. Unfortunately Honda nor Northern Tool will replace it but requiring me to take it in to their shop. The GCV200 has the cam internal with push rods rather than overhead cam like the older models. With the new set up, complete disassembly of the engine is required to replace the cam and compression relief mechanism. I am disappointed to buy a new mower and have the engine completely taken apart and reassembled. Unexpected for Honda to ship it with the defect. The pull cord abruptly stopped when I first pulled it so hard it bent the keeper on the handle. I purchased a Honda battery charger to make sure the battery is fully charged. Have you encountered this problem? The mechanic at the shop said they had just completed repairing one and that the part is on backorder. Defects happen to every manufacturer, the difference is how it is handle. I would like to have an exchange for another new mower rather than a major repair. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4HZqaKhhJaMf6s

I’d only do what the manual says. If it says 5 hrs break in that’s what I’ll do. If you bought a 4 stroke Yamaha outboard they have many specific procedures for the break In period. If you made up your own rules for the break in you may blow something going 5600 rpm. I just bought a Toro timecutter zero turn last year. That was 5-6 hours breaking then new oil. I’d always do what the manual says to the letter.
