Great video. I bought myself a Rhino greenhouse when I retired a few years ago and it has been brilliant. It's as good and solid now as it was when new. 10 x 8 seemed enormous when it arrived but, like you say, your interests and ambitions grow to fill the space available. Tomatoes, cucumbers and a grapevine are now fighting for space with the cuttings bench. In fact I could almost do with a separate greenhouse for cuttings and propagation - dream on. Another thing to think about when siting your greenhouse is, how easy is it to run electricity and water to it. Water's not difficult - you can easily bury a hosepipe connection - but the time will come when you want some heat for your seedlings in early spring, not to mention the heated propagation bench......... It never stops.

This video is one of the most articulate-right to the point-videos I’ve seen on KZbin. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us, Eli. You’ve prevented me from framing the bottom of our in-the-mail greenhouse with a 4 X 4 frame. And, being a Californian, I can tell you that your Scottish accent is delightful. I could listen to it for hours. The only problem is, my wife thinks I’m being silly when I attempt to repeat your accent. But it’s fun, all the same. Thanks again, your new subscriber, Tim.

I'm glad you found it useful Tim (Michael). The greenhouse is probably the most frequent subject to appear on comments on this channel so I thought it might be useful for folk. Hmmm I think I'm going to support your wife on your copying my accent :) I think the majority of us make a mess of other accents... dude... woah... smurfs up dude.... 😉😉😉

The Kitchen Garden with Eli & Kate . Eli, you made me laugh. I live in far-northern California. We don’t talk like L.A. Valley Girls ... for reals. P.s., I didn’t know my name was Michael until I was in the first grade. My family called me by my middle name, which is Tim.
@eliandkate4 жыл бұрын
:) that's the sucky thing, we can never tell the difference between other accents, even though the local ones to ourselves all seem really obvious. SO genuinely I have no idea what LA Valley Girls sound like, I'm one hundred percent going on stereotypes probably from Finding Nemo :). Cause that's real yeah? I did a video on my accent because so many people thought I was Irish (rolls eyes), you might get a kick out of it, my sister joined in with me to show how accents change over time and when you move around and added that lovely element of confusion to point out that Scotland has hundreds of different accents - but like I say like everywhere else - obvious to locals not so much to other folk :) :) Tim it is :)

This is very informative. But if you live in Texas, USA. …. Unless you have “super expensive”, “mega thick” ( almost bullet proof… Lol) glass, then you might want to rethink glass for a greenhouse! It’s too hot in the summer…. Glass intensifies the heat turning it into an oven in summer….. baking your plants! And…. One of our occasional hailstorms will turn it into smashed “crushed glass” house! It’s Sad…. But true. Only the very wealthy can afford the type of glass you would need for a large greenhouse here.

Your video was really helpful- lots of detail, and thanks for pointing out the automatic openers for the vents. I may need to order some of those...I got a Rhino greenhouse in March and it is brilliantly designed. It was pretty dear, but then i will never need to buy another one.I like that there re pre-drilled holes in the frame to hang hanging baskets (i've got trailing tomatoes in mine) and they can also be used to tie canes to. I live near the coast and it gets really windy here, too, but i'm pretty sure it will withstand the worst gales. I went for in-built staging to make it extra strong, and it's been great, too. I've still to lay slabs down the middle (just a dirt floor) , but that will have to wait til the tomatoes are done for the year.

I'm actually getting close to finishing building my own greenhouse. The main wall is made of two salvaged Bay Windows and the back wall is repurposed pallets. I love your idea of the pavers to store the heat... where I've built mine half the ground is concrete the other is garden and I plan on having an L shape raised garden planter (made out of pallets) that covers that space, I'm debating covering the concrete with wood chips but I'm not sure yet. The rough area is about 5m X 2m (with a sloped roof running from roughly 2.7 to 2.4m) so hopefully I will get a lot of good use from it (that size is about the maximum I can have before I'd have to get building permits).

Good afternoon Eli and Kate. I'm just planning for my first ever greenhouse and was wondering if you could give me some advice as I've been following you for a little while now and you are full of tips and great video's to watch on how you do your planning etc. I was wondering what you would advise on having breeze blocks or red bricks as the base to attach your greenhouse to or did you just screw your greenhouse in to concrete?
@eliandkate2 жыл бұрын
Mine is screwed into concrete but as I didn’t need to increase the height, that concrete is poured into holes in the ground. Definitely screw it into something heavy like concrete…. You’d be surprised how many horror stories I hear from folk who haven’t.

We want the best type for ease of use for domestic use...thinking 8x14 in size...worried about temperature control...can ye help?

Hey Anthony, to be honest, things have changed so much since I made these videos and polycarbonate greenhouses are a whole different kettle of fish these days. I'd say don't make a decision based on supposides from the internet :D Go have a look at some greenhouses both glass and poly and decide which feels right, looks right etc. For a domestic garden, the differences aren't really big enough these days to justify the extra stress or work in buying one. :D

I would love a Greenhouse. The price seems stop this dream. Plus I have two dying BIG trees on the south side of my yard. How much wind will your Greenhouse tolerate? I live on the East coast of USA, we normally get the remnants of a hurricane or tropical storm. When Hurricane Ian reach us highest gusts reached 50+ mph in Southampton County, Va.
@eliandkate2 жыл бұрын
Hard to say LjRay but 50mph isn't unusual for us - as I mentioned we live in a very open environment with no much wind break, on the coast. So we are in a very windy spot. The type of greenhouse I have is only available in the UK, but even then, for folk in the northern islands (like Shetland) - they are famous for their problems with wind and have their own local greenhouse company that make greenhouses specifically to cope with their environment. :D Would be worth asking around locally to you.

@@eliandkate Thanks for the information. My husband and I have been Gardening for 3 years. 2022 was the first time growing everything from seed. I'm using one of our rooms with grow lights. My problem is when we bring the seedlings outside we don't have time to bring the back inside. Some of plants die. I've tried placing them under a tree though it doesn't seem to get enough sun. I have a cheap greenhouse made of plastic...Hopefully this will work for one season. Though my goal is to get a high tunnel after the dying trees are down . Thanks again.

@@BeachLuvR72 Do you have a cold frame? These are like miniature greenhouses (usually in polycarbonate) with opening lids that, whilst no replacement for a greenhouse, are absolutely perfect for "hardening off" (the act of acclimatising indoor-grown plants to outside weather). You simply lift the lid up in the day and place it down at night - taking mere seconds to do! You'll likely still want a greenhouse in the future, but it seems that a couple of cold-frames would suit your current needs very well. I myself have used them for a few years to tide me over until I could afford the "perfect" greenhouse for me :)

I'm loving all your stuff, had got tired of the lovely Monty because he doesn't deal with the weather conditions here. Great advice about greenhouses, had already decided on a Rhino because I live in a very exposed place in Dumfriesshire and get a huge amount of wind from the Solent here. So much so that I can't grow anything taller than 60cm, except the odd well staked tree...can you tell me if yours is the classic or premium? I am not sure which to go for. I will have to have a smaller one than yours because I don't have the space for bigger sadly.
@eliandkate3 жыл бұрын
I have to admit, I only started watching #gardenersworld about a year ago because when I first started gardening, it just always seemed to be so different to what we were experiencing. We are definitely a #beechgrovegarden house :) But we do enjoy it now purely because Monty is so watchable. We are in the same position as you regarding wind. We're on the coast so we have loads if issues with really strong winds and similarity, taller plants get burned by it:( Our greenhouse is a classic (took me years to save for that so how long would it take for a premium)... to be honest, the classic is strong as hell, so the premium must be a tank.
@nicolahart91773 жыл бұрын
Great thanks that will save quite a bit!! Yes Beechgrove is better. Not sure if you are aware and if it makes any difference to you but most of the Amazon links I clicked on are no longer available...

Hi. Thank you for that video. I am looking to buy a greenhouse (and bigger than I originally thought) made of aluminium and safety glass with gutters and a base (whatever that is). I am partially-sighted and the big drawback is a lip at the door - I tripped on one in the garden centre. I wish to ask - do I need to find a special one or is there a way of erecting it so that it is flat to the ground? I've been told to get concrete laid around the edges to place the greenhouse on and that the lip is necessary to stop rain flowing in (I don't buy that one!). I need to know so that I can tell the person erecting it what I want instead of getting what they want. It is tricky to find the right person for- the job - I was once advised to remove weeds by spreading diesel and someone else said they would use RoundUp. It's safe to say that neither got the chance to do either!
@eliandkate3 жыл бұрын
Hey Teresa I absolutely understand what you are talking about and yes, you need to buy a greenhouse that specifically has a low door threshold. They are aimed at wheel chair users. Mine (which is a rhino greenhouse) has this as standard but not all do.

I live in coastal Virginia where summer temps often exceed 90F. My ideal spot faces SW so is in sun most of the day & during the hottest part too. Will the side & top vents plus the open door provide adequate means of cooling or will I need a fan?
@eliandkate2 жыл бұрын
Hey Don Afraid I can’t really comment on what’s it’s like in your garden as I’m based in Scotland but I would imaging the ideal temperatures would depend on why you’re growing and if you need to add assistance you might need a fan but also shading

We live in a area with high winds, hot days and rainy days and are not sure if it can hold on to it structure without falling apart. I so wish I'd had this info before I bought my poly greenhouse. Great informative video. Quick question, does the ridge direction matter or Is it more about having direct sun on the greenhouse? Think I'm going to look at an upgrade now 😂. Thanks Will
@eliandkate4 жыл бұрын
Hey Will.... hmmm I think the answer might be a wee bit more complicated than first thought. But I suppose that depends on what your priority is and what your set up is. I'm by no means an expert, hence why my advise is always based on personal experience, but if your concern is wind (since you are a poly owner) yea yes, the ridge direction may help to shield you from the wind a bit. However if you are talking about sunlight, then what you have inside can make a difference too... so if you have lots of tall bushy plants in the area facing the sun (regardless of what are that is) this will cause a bit of shadow. But.... I would say that the ridge facing the sun at its peak would mean more of the greenhouse gets the light, in normal circumstances. The sun shining along the length of the roof rather than from the side. I hope that makes sense because it is a difficult thing to explain without pictures.

Super! Thanks Eli for some awesome info. Trying to figure out what is the best solution for our farm. Poly or Glass....Glass is sooooo expensive. But we have crazing 70 K winds at times. Do you know if there's a solution for Poly (like silicone all the frames) to strengthen the structure? Any help would be appreciated.🤟
@eliandkate Жыл бұрын
I can't say that any of these suggestions work for sure as I haven't tried them myself but I know a few folk use flexible outdoor silicone sealant, but I know the more expensive poly-greenhouses (like polycrib) actually screw the panels in place. Those are designed for proper winds (excess of 70 miles per hour) n the Shetlands.
@Duiren Жыл бұрын
I've not done it with a greenhouse but for our conservatory I've used Sikaflex which is a flexible construction adhesive, much like normal silicone but I've been very impressed with it holding Polycarb roof panels in place, plus it's proving very waterproof so far
