Hi Sir! My husband is being offered a rescue (approx. 6month old) Belgian Malinois... And I personally do NOT like having pets in our home! But he absolutely loves the breed... He’s working pretty much all day and I’m left at home... I guess I’m messaging you to ask what your advice would be? Should we get a 6month Belgian Malinois (is it still trainable by then) or pass on the FREE offer?
@4lphy2754 жыл бұрын
@@indakgalak Basically yeah, of course it is trainable, just make sure it's pure breed. If it is a mix, I wouldn't get it, it's my personal opinion. This dog has to be stimulated daily, he needs at least 2-4 hours of exercise a day. If not properly handled the dog can become aggressive. So if Your husband works I am not sure if he is going to have enough time to work with the dog. But anyway, I understand why he loves this breed, I do too. They are very loyal. One more important thing is to know, who the parents of the puppy were. Were they from the working line, if so that means doggo is going to have a lot more energy. Take care! Regarding all of that, they are awesome. 😃😃

@@indakgalak I love this breed, they need to be walked and played with as they are quite active. This breed is super smart, and are always trainable at any age, Are Belgium would open the door to my daughters room to be with her, she would turn the door handle with her mouth, once we had a group of teenagers try to break into our shed, heidi was having none of that of that and those kids never came back. @MrsWenBM that sounds pretty typical to me, ignorant person wants to get a breed of dog that his lifestyle doesn't and cannot support. @daviddieudonne78294 жыл бұрын
@@indakgalak hi, I don’t know what you ended up doing, but as a first dog, I wouldn’t recommend a malinois, especially not if you don’t really want pets and you are the one going to be home all day. The dog will love you to death (literally) but he will ask a lot of time and energy. If you know it’s not your thing, he’s going to annoy you and you’ll annoy him. That will result in an overcompensating behavior from him. Very likely biting furniture, shoes, whatever. Especially a puppy. For a first pet, I would recommend or an older dog, that has been trained and is already “ calmed” Or the more “ lazy “ dogs, they can be big or small. People love dogs, but when and how it suits them, that’s not how it works. A dog like a malinois needs attention and physical and mental stimuli. That means several walks a day and other challenges too. The dog doesn’t care if it’s warm or cold or raining... There are so many types of dogs that could fit you better and believe me I recommend you taking one, for you husband but also for you. You might not want pets, but you’ll end up loving them, trust me. But start with something easier to handle. And beware, all dogs need attention and a way to get their energy used. Good luck.

@@rameezsafdar6563 he should never win. Any command you give he should do and you don’t move on until he’s done it. If you give in once he’s won and becomes the pack leader over you. The basics are so important to show your the pack leader. If you go through a door or a gate YOU go first not the dog. If you are going for a walk never start the walk with him on his back legs pulling the lead. It’s a sit, stay then when you’re read YOU tell him to move not when he wants and most importantly, consistency it has to be done every time not just when you can be bothered. When I lived with my parents, we had a Malinois X Greyhound from the shelter. Best dog ever. Outside the house, she showed best of both worlds. Very obedient, also of the leash. Always kept by my side, without formal training. When she had the 'okay' to go, she ran like crazy. She had the natural desire to please. Sat when I asked, always walked by my side, looking at me for a command. Once I forgot to say 'come, girl', and she was waiting on me, 100 feet behind. I bet her previous owner taught het, but it came so natural to me. She was the very first dog we met at the shelter, and it was an instant click. She was very social with strangers, especially kids. Kids called her 'Bambi', because of her disproportional ears. In-house she was a couch potato, but very protective. Unfortunately, my parents divorced and Byoux, that was her name, ended up with my mom. My dad and I lived 1 mile away. One night, she escaped from my mom's house and got run over, probably looking for me. I feel sick to this day, 20 years later. Best. Dog. Ever.

The U.S. Army had these dogs working as I.E.D. dogs. Since I was in charge of a Route Clearance platoon, we had the chance to work with several of them, and I must say, they are the smartest dogs I've every come across in my lifetime. The handlers were excellent, and the dogs were beyond awesome. We would hit our target, the handler would open the door to the vehicle, the dog would hit the ground and move in a coordinated manner by what the handler yelled out. It was truely amazing watching this dog "grid work" before our troops hit the ground, and even after our 5-25's this dog found 3 buried explosives that would have wounded or killed our "boots on the ground" troops. In other words, you got an independent dog that thinks and acts on his own, nothing like a working line mal or GSD who was bred to please their handlers. Sure you can teach them a few tricks, but to claim they have the same level of obedience as a belgian mal is ludacris. 100% on this. My brother trains with Police and SAR teams, had two GSD's, both from Czech working dog lines. There is a big difference between a dog breed from your local breeder and one from a working dog line. The latter can come with a bloodline that can sometimes go back over a hundred years, all bred for a specific purpose and they all come with an unbelievable amount of drive. His GSD's basically had two speeds: sleep and 110%, there was nothing in between. They are truly incredible animals BUT, as you said, its literally 24/7/365. My brother isnt married and has no kids and always said if a woman ever told him "its me or the dog", he'd send her packing. Sadly, all his dogs have passed and he has since stepped away from it because it literally dominated his life for about 20 years, but its an experience I always truly appreciated. I had six malis in my life and I currently own two of them. I also lead a dog school in Europe. Malis need a lot of time and daily training but ofc they are not energized 24h a day and they shouldn’t be energized 18h a day if the owner is holding the dog as he should. Usually they tend to sleep 18-20h a day. Training a Belgium Shepard has the same rules as other working dogs - less is more. If your dog is energized for 20h a day you should visit your local dog school to learn more about holding a malinois as obviously something is wrong and will affect his health.

WOW. I just rescued a Belgain off the side of the road in Tennessee where I heard they abandon dogs regularly. She had been hit by a car and has a limp leg. She was sweet and came right to me. It's been One Week and I now see just how much energy she has, how much she wants to play, and what I got myself into!!! She's wonderful. But I obviously need to double the walk! Thanks for the awesome video!!

Gotta 90lb Pit, Husky, Rhodesian Ridgeback mix who wants to work 24/7. Had squirrels that were chewing wires in my truck and suv. Taught him to check the cars which means he would walk around then under and get his head in the engine bay. He took the job so seriously the concrete was filing away his nails to the wick. Open the door and straight bolt to the cars, every time. The only way I could coax him away was playing fetch or swimming in the pond. Never seen commitment like that. What’s funny is we moved from the country to the city and my neighborhood is now riddled with squirrels. Poor guy. Sometimes I’ll give him the ‘check’ command when he’s going in the car with me to make people think he’s sniffing for explosives. Got to amuse myself somehow these days.

That’s the hardest part, not the training or the damage they do when they are puppies but when you get so attached to these beautiful natured animals and the time on Earth they get is short . .

Exactly, that's what im trying to tell to people when they ask me what's it like to have one.. If you don't dedicate yourself to the dog work, you'll be in problems. People see only success and they adore this dog obedience but they don't realise how much time and work malinois demands. And if you don't know what you are doing it's gonna be bad for you. My friends have german shepards and i had 2 before i had malinois and when someone says they are similiar to malinois. They are not, the most active german shepard i've seen isn't even close to my mal's drive. This is half dog- half machine :) Think few times before you get one or just get different dog because this one lives to work something.

Well said, I have a Caucasian Ovcharka and it is the same. So often people will approach me to remark how beautiful she is/remarkable/smart that they want one and I caution them the same as you ...are you ready to be "in training" for the next decade or more because the dog will never ever take a day off and will ALWAYS be on guard whether you are or not (which can particularly be a problem with Ovcharkas because of their extreme guardian instincts). No matter who you are and how well prepared you think you might be you should research the breed, even mix breeds before committing to it.
@elegantstrawberry7 жыл бұрын
JULIA Dog lover I love livestock guardian dogs! My favorite breed is the Tibetan Mastiff and I maybe want to get one in the future. However, those kind of dogs are, like you said always on guard. You have to train them well and give them a purpose, i.e. give them a property to guard, so they can satisfy their instincts. Also those breeds aren't like shepherd dogs, they don't listen to every command you give them and that's what I personally don't want, so a livestock guardian dog is not exactly my type of dog. Sad, but I am being realistic :) People need to understand that you have adjust to the lifestyle of your dog not the other way around.
@juliadoglover91817 жыл бұрын
Yes Sofia Geros, so true. LGDs are fantastic if you can understand and deal with them not being like other dogs in some ways and like you said being able to adjust to your dog. With a defined place in the home and something to focus on as their responsibility, they are stable, intelligent, remarkable dogs. There is a video of a guy with a Caucasian, that he got because the breeder advertised that the dog had the stopping power of a 45 caliber hand gun - cant imagine what he thought he needed that level of protection from since he lived in a very nice house in the suburbs - the dog is just pulling him down the street chasing a car. Mine never did that because she was trained and understood her place and was very happy with that. That guy in the video clearly did not have control of the dog - the dog controlled him. That can happen very easily with LGDs like Caucasian and Tibetan Mastiff and that does not make for a happier dog, in fact it makes for an unhappier and unstable dog. The last thing you want is one of these unstable because they are ruthless killers if left to their own device and you can't fault the dog, that is no joke or exaggeration. The dog is only doing what it was breed to do. Glad to hear that you are being realistic about what kind of dog you are in the position to own as you will be happier with the dog you choose. Good luck!

Beautiful dog! Very well trained. This is what this dog should be, this is not your average dog. I could never be a good leader for this dog.

Thank you. Very honest of you. They are great dogs, just more than most people will ever need/ really want.

MasterPaw here I sit a month later, last night my wife sent me a message with a family relative just got one. Last time I checked, I have no family that runs marathons. I'm really scared and hope this puppy doesn't end up on the street. When they find out how much attention this breed needs from the owner because they want to be a great dog.

Yes u can u just need the patience and determination. A dog will not work with you if you are frustrated. My dog Shadow, (he's a Belgian mallinois mixed with Australian shepherd and basenji and a weimaraner) at first I didn't know what to do with him, but then after a period of time, he was doing pole jumps a foot above him no problem. He knows how to jump, stand, do a downward dog, sit, crawl, lay down, u name it. I'm not a patient person- AT ALL - but I worked with him and now I'm training him to be a agility dog and service dog to go to elderly or foster homes.

OreoCookie 360 I agree anyone can own this dog. you're doing injustice, if you don't put that 100% effort for this dog. I own two GSD one is older and calm now the other is younger and hyper but not too hyper. They fit my lifestyle

My daughter had one of these that I babysat for a summer. It was by far the most intelligent dog that I’ve ever known.

that is a good reaction ! lots of people find out that the dog they bought is "too much" for them - it is very important to inform you about the dog you buy ! I have 2 Malinois at this moment and they are both "busy" dogs as in the vid :)

Thank you VERY much for taking the time to create this video. We need more videos like this to educate people on the breeds of dogs that are out there BEFORE they get one. I've been in rescue for many years and too many times, people get dogs like this (wonderful as they are) because the dog looks good or they want a guard dog - whatever the reason; however the people do not have the lifestyle nor the discipline to put in the time to train dogs like this. We as people need to be honest with ourselves of what kind of lifestyles we really have before we get these highly driven, highly energetic dogs. Because what happens, unfortunately when people take on a dog like this, the dog becomes "a problem" and then gets rid of the dog. It's the dogs that pay the ultimate price when we're not honest with ourselves. So thank you VERY much and good job on a well-trained dog. He's beautiful.

The reason I want one is to keep me busy as well. I miss my dogs, they both lived a long life but lost one in Feb and one in June, now I'm missing a big part of my life.
@TH3USUALSUSPECT3 жыл бұрын
Don't do it, either you're active or you are not. Don't get a malinois hoping to keep you busy, because busy is not the right word, its a full commitment, if you have any doubt in your mind that you cannot offer a malinoise 2-4 hours a day, of mental AND physical excercise. DO NOT GET ONE! Its more than just walking/playing.

Me: I should get a Dog to feel relaxed after a long day at very taxing job. Malinois: Woof woof! I am your 2nd job!

We have a 2 year old mali. He was a NIGHTMARE till about 18 months and then things started to change. Over the last 6 months he's become the most incredible solid trustworthy dog. A LOT of work has to go into them but it's so rewarding when you see the lights go on and he does his thing. He does man trailing twice a week and goes on a 5km run with us 3 times a week. He also goes for obedience training once a week. That's apart from the daily walks and bits of obedience work that I try to do as much as possible. This is not a dog that you can just leave be.

Malinois and GSD have three phases of life. Cute puppy, PTERDACTYL and adulthood. My Schatzi stayed in the second stage until two and a half. Normal now.
