Well, if you're American, it is the only way you can get her to the US (via K-1 fiancée visa). Since the government doesn't grant tourist visas, for the most part, if you ever want her to set foot in the US you have to tie the knot. Great? No, it's like the government holding a gun to your head. But it is what it is.

One of the biggest problems with this situation is that both parties involved tend to assume the other understands way more than they actually do. It is definitely a catch-22 situation that needs acknowledgment and patience from both people.

I have been married to a Chinese Malaysian wife for over 50 years. She came to the USA 56 years ago. Her first language is Cantonese but all of her education through technical school was in English. She still doesn't understand English idioms, or slang. I have to avoid it or I bring problems unto myself. This is off subject - but you do have to understand your wife's HARD boundaries. For example, in child raising and especially with dealing with the house, some things have to be done her way whether I like it or not. She had not problem following me around the world as we moved every few years for my job. Or choosing new cars or new homes so I had a lot of freedom to make decisions but not in some areas which are very important to her.

This is similar to the problem I have with my Thai wife. I am fluent in English and my wife's English is pretty good for a Thai person so the communication skills are NOT the issue. Rather, whether it's a Thai thing or a female thing, in a conversation my wife often only tells me, let's say 30 percent of what is necessary to understand, and expects me to fully understand. Needless to say, I don't know WTF she's saying so I lose my temper. My wife needs to try harder to fully communicate or I need to become more patient or both. International marriage is tough.

This is interesting Dave, but hand on heart, can such a relationship be a good one when two people are unable to communicate/understand eachother properly. Let's face it, even a relationship with both sides speaking the same language, it's hard enough.
@JohnArmstrong_
@JohnArmstrong_ 9 ай бұрын
Of course it can be good. Much of a relationship is emotional. At best, emotions can be poorly expressed in words. Language is an approximation of thoughts. Verbal communication is only one part of all communication.
@keepitreal1547
@keepitreal1547 9 ай бұрын
@@JohnArmstrong_ I agree with that, but verbal communication & that of what it entails, plays a huge part in any relationship. Not only that, but the understanding of eachother through it, which would not come through no communication or lack of...just as Dave says in his vlog.

100% correct. This is a major issue even with partners with better than the average Thai English, Eg: Filipinas who speak English reasonably well. Another issue is that it makes one reluctant to even try and get across more complex concepts meaning communication is diminished - not a good thing.

echoing another comment abt harry's role. I cannot recall the last time I witnessed a woman "going off" in public. maybe that's a key to peacekeeping. when a guy senses his partner is about to erupt, seeing if there's a way to delay it by getting to a place among other people. kind of goes with "saving face". in public, the woman may search for a way quiet her anger. it just might work, or mmmaybe NOT! stored up frustration isn't good either. sigh!

I can totally agree with you and back it up with my personal experience . Don't ever take it for granted when you speak English to her that she comprehends what you said . I always double check but the problem is when she did comprehend she gets pissed off that I don't respect her English skills by double checking . Like she loses face assuming I think she is stupid,when in fact I don't,I just don't want to end up with miscommunication resulting in friction just like you described . The two languages don't lend themselves to good translation unless you're fluent either way . I don't regret marrying her just because of possible miscommunication as I'm quite patient in explaining over and over until it's clear but it's her who gets irritated as it reflects on her "face". We farangs don't care too much about face,they do. I remember back when we were in Australia once a stranger stopped us in the street asking for directions and addressed himself to her. She then sent him in the opposite direction because she couldn't utter the words "I don't know, where it is.". Loss of face , like I talk to her and she nods but I can see she doesn't understand and I need to try to rephrase it. Eventually it should improve ,you have been together ,what..11 years. It should be better than what you described.

@@SantiSabaiLife you're right . Managing a mixed cultural relationship has many challenges. Language is just one of them. I have had a few long term relationships here and 44 years of connections to Thailand so I'm quite used to hiccups. Now I tell my better half that I want a peaceful,stress-free life. Mostly she obliges, at times she is feisty . Another thing which may come into it is an upcoming menaupause sometimes in the not too distant future . Phew!

Language is a factor, but I think the greater worldview can potentially be an even bigger one. I've found many westerners don't get the concept that when you marry a Thai or a Filipina, you're marrying her entire family. That can involve a whole lot of things, mostly involving the phrase "you pay." 🙃 It also needs to be said that far too many farangs look for love in the wrong places and convince themselves "mine's different."

Thank you so much for this video, . Gold, just gold -exactly what I have experienced with my thai partner of 20 years and there i was thinking 'is this right'? My experience has been one of tolerance, acceptance- she will tolerate alot, but , believe me, she is in no way the stereotypical asian woman that unnformed , inexperienced westerners seem to believe in- and on our holidays in Thailand, she will encourage me to get out at night and go to places that western women would not allow thier signifigant others to go alone . But the belters of arguement we have had, the crazy, senseless arguements , and her responses are exactly as you describe-I must be stupid for not understanding, but it doesn`t occur to her for a moment that perhaps both of us are not understanding .Yet we`ve stayed together 2 decades. some might have names for this situation but i can catergoricaly state that she is the best thing that has happened to me . she`s older than me, which straight away smashes stereotypes that so many people have. A long time ago i stopped being suprised at the people who had absolutely no idea at all yet seemed to think they knew because they watched a show on tv, had talked with other people who "knew" or watched a couple of youtube videos. Cheers from Australia

Hi, interesting video, i just wanted to give me feedback. I've been with my gf for about 2 years and she's from bkk and works as an account sales at an IT recruitment company and I'm a programmer, so luckily her english is fairly good already and so is mine even though it's not my native language. We've had miscommunications, but i dont think we've had major arguments because of them. So to me it seems like a lot would depend on how you approach the interaction with eachother: if you both know the communication is potentially flawed and try to understand eachother then issues will be minimal. If not then... things will be more difficult. And then i would try to discover why they are not trying or arguing so quickly. Something like your example would never lead us to argue, we would just laugh about it. So to me it sounds more like she is already maybe not so happy about other things (aka maybe 'you turned her off' to put it crudely). Best wishes.
