I ran one of these (vertical pockets) in El Salvador. Hot tip: Replace the shoulder pads which rub your neck with M1967 H-harness or similar. It sounds like it wouldn't work as well, but is far more comfy. FWIW, my go-to rig is a Dutch LBV with M1967 H-harness, using double USMC mag pouches. I run 6 mags plus a pistol in the 4th pouch. My only complaint is lack of MOLLE real estate at the top edge of the panel. There is a version that predates the FLC that was designed for Medics that has MOLLE webbing all the way up. Very hard to find. Other than that, very comfy, easy to get prone and work prone, good under movement.

As a USMC veteran, I stayed with ALICE all the way thrue my 2nd Enlistment, when coming home for good and going on camping, hunting, and hiking trips, I stayed with my 782 gear. Then a seen the LBV 88 vest a friend of mine pointed out to me at a flea market some years ago, it was complete with the vest, cartridge belt, butt Pack, two belt mag pouches, compass pouch two canteens canteen carriers and two cups, for $35 bucks, he told me to grab it up, I looked it over carefully and immediately seen its worth and use, it enhances the 782 gear. So yeah! I bought it. I also use the ALICE radiomans pack, it is smaller than the medium ALICE pack, but when on a three day outing / patrol, one doesn't need to carry a whole lot, but with that radioman's ALICE I can stretch to 9 days if need be. The water bladder can be placed in that space between you and your pack frame. My Dads best advice, " Stick with what you know how to use." That is just what I did and found LBV88 fits well within that realm. Excellent video XXlarge DUDE.

Ran the LBV-88 back when I was in, I think we go them issued around 94. Basically ran the same setup, Butt pack, 2 canteens plus 2 of the ammo pouches. Used one of the frag pouches for my compass, and the other for face paint or whatever else I needed. Wore that over the old Flack jackets that really didn't do anything but make you sweet you a$$ off in the field. I still have my setup that I ran back then and still run it sometime. My go to lately has been the TAP chest rig with a few mods to it like changing out the harness to a H harness. Good video, MIl surplus is a great way to get gear on a budget, and it last as long as you take care of it.

I have been using an ETLBV for about 5 years now. I take it camping. Have a buttpack, 2 canteens, IFAK, SAW pouch (for commonly used items), and extra ALICE mag pouch with grenade wings cut off. By itself, I can go overnight easy. Add a CFP90 Patrol Pack and I can go 3 days. Add a Medium ALICE pack and I go a week (do this once a year). The main issue is room for food. If I use my Large ALICE or add my MOLLE Sleep System carrier, I can extend that time to whatever I need. Remember, this is just for carrying the stuff you need. It is tough, works well if you know how to use it. Get out there and practice with whatever you have.

You can also use 550 cord as mag lifters in the old 3 mag pouches but it makes it easier by cutting the dividers out. Just attach one end to the pouch, run it down the inside middle of the pouch and up the other side. Tie a good size knot to the end. Drop mags in then pull the 550 lifter cord to raise mags. I prefer putting 550 cord mag lifters on at least the middle mag of the pouch to give room to grab the other two after you lift the middle mag out. Cut straps of Velcro (both sides) about 1/2" wide and various length to make adjustable attachment straps to attach various items to your rig. Once you get the knack, you can make pistol mag and rifle mag carriers too. Use some bike and small car inner tube to make rings of rubber bands that also work to tighten your gear down. Great way to attach gear like a poncho to your gear by attaching the bands and slipping the gear in. You probably know you can use cable binders to replace the old digging in Alice clips. I use them to adjust a tight fit, cut off the extra length and melt it together. When you need replacement, just cut it off and replace. Much better. History is repeating it self with thoughts of adaptable rigs for jungle fighting, etc. As you can tell, I have been using the older gear. Cooler in hot times.

There are a few airsoft water camelbak-esque carriers you can easily attach to a rig like that. I have 2 mounted on the back of a RRV, one flat and one sack, and the sack one crushes flat to double as a pack if I decide to drop the 1 liter pouch and just run the flat 2 liter one. I also carry a 1 quart canteen on my battle belt to always have water on every line. Emersongear Tactical Vest Hydration Pouch 1.5L Condor 111030 Tactical Hiking Tidepool MOLLE Hydration Carrier They're cheap, have a good form factor that doesn't add much bulk, and they're STURDY. I have used the condor one in actual combat, and the emerson one... I haven't used it in combat, but I have done 10 mile and 20 mile rucks with it, with simulated combat movements, both full and crushed down, and it hasn't failed yet. If it can handle my abuse I am more than willing to vouch for it. I'm not at all kind to my gear.

If you can buy cheap surplus other than US, british PLCE is excellent belt kit, bit more comfy than ALICE. Especially with the hip pad protector (which itself is worthy thing to add to ALICE). Also, love how first put your hand in front of the muzzle to check the light in 3:34, only to then check the magazine is not present and chamber is empty. You could promote proper handling by doing this in opposite order, even that you probably knew there is nothing in the chamber when you put the hand on the other end (yeah, no hand is on the trigger, but it could still flip the safety and snag the trigger on something you are wearing, low probability but nasty consequences).

Great video. I love the aesthetic of the 80s and 90s US military gear, and frankly your set up will probably work better for guys with back injuries than a pure chest rig. By the way, in hot weather you are going to need far more than two canteens of water per three days, and even in cold weather you will go through probably four canteens a day. If you are just relaxing, you could get away with two canteens per day. If moving and fighting/hiking, you will need 4-5 and possibly more per day. I think it was expected that two canteens would get a soldier by for a half day. I did not serve in the military, but I was a fireman before going construction. Fighting fires, we would easily go through a gallon of water to drink in a couple hours. I once got a major heat injury fighting fire on a 110 degree day with high humidity and full sun and went through more water bottles + IV fluids than I could count. In construction- especially working on the roof or siding in the summer, its easy to drink well over a gallon. Better have extra water and filtration or iodine as well as rehydration salts. Remember when drinking a ton, you can wash out your electrolytes, not to mention that you will be losing them from sweating.

Oh yes 2qts of water is definitely not enough, hence why I was asking about modifying a camelback the integrate with the lbv. I’m blessed enough to live in an area that is plentiful of water though springs, creeks, and rivers. The downside is time it takes to purify.

@@XXLDUDE Yeah when I used to backpack, I kept a 2L or 3L bladder at the top of the pack inside the flap with the hose going down my left shoulder, and I kept probably 3 more liters in the pack. Sometimes more. Where I live there are drainage ditches for the farmer fields, and the occasional creeks but I dont think that water is clean enough to purify with the fertilizers and other runoff.

Bought my LBVE-88 for $25 & paired it with a Blackhawk reinforced duty belt -- Not to mention a few MOLLE pieces (AR mag pouches, dump pouch, pistol holster, IFAK, etc.). By far, it's the best (most comfortable) kit I've ever used, especially over the LBE I was issued in the Army. I agree that using STANAGS is definitely helpful (especially in the double mag pouches), but I also use my pmags no problem. That said, I did add ranger pulls to all my mags to make retrieval a bit easier, but it wasn't absolutely required

So I just remembered a trick you can use. You know how to take your mags apart, right. Take a piece of 550 cord, cut it a figures length. Take the guts don't take them out. Tie a knot at each end. Don't tie a knot. Your going to make a loop with the 550 cord. Like the pmag bubber extractor. Rangers and a few other high speed units did it. You put both ends of the 550 cord under each side of the bottom plat. It makes a loop so you can use your finger to pull the mag. Sorry a little long winded.

In the jungle there are no “frontlines”. The vegetation can be very thick, and very easy to be suprised walking up on bad guys who might be sneaking around as well, not having time to shoulder your weapon. Both in training and practice, is why you will see footage or pics, or talk to guys that shot from the hip. I chose this route because you could get hour long videos that no one will watch vs overview eview then Comparison. Buckle up for the ride!

I have both and I couldn't get the flc to fit me very well. I'm 6'4" so for me the FLC sucks. I love my eLBV. It does a fantastic job of distributing the load and places the weight on your hips. I have no problems wearing it for a 10-12 hour day hiking. It's also easy to take off when youre taking a break and put back on when it's time to get moving again.
