The genre of music they play is called ( KERONCONG), Keroncong originated from the music brought by Portuguese traders and sailors when they arrived in the archipelago starting in the 16th century AD (1500s). This keroncong music was developed from this music, especially seen from the influence of the ukulele and guitar which came from a Portuguese musical instrument called the braquinha. Initially this music was played by the lower classes, such as slaves and laborers who worked for the Portuguese. The development of this keroncong can be seen from the keroncong center in the Tugu area, Jakarta. The inhabitants of this area used to be mostly Mardijkers, who are descendants of Portuguese slaves who mostly adapted Portuguese culture. Keroncong Tugu became a type of keroncong that was very popular during the colonial period. For a long time, the keroncong music of the upper classes such as the Dutch and the Indos (a mixture of Dutch and Indonesian) burned. Keroncong also used to be popular among native Indonesians. Among the priyayo, the popular keroncong is what is called the influence of gamelan music, which is called Javanese style keroncong. However, the popularity of keroncong began to wane since the 1960s, along with the entry of contemporary western music influences such as pop and rock. Musical instruments used in keroncong include flute, violin, cello, contrabass, cuk (ukulele with nylon strings), cak (Ukulele with metal strings), guitar, and vocalist. Modern versions of the keroncong can add other instruments such as the saxophone and keyboard. Popular keroncong artists of his time included Gesang, Waldjinah and Hetty Koes Endang.
