If you get a poor queen, isn't it possible for the colony to replace her? How often do they replace or attempt to replace queens?
@mellew075 жыл бұрын
Great question! Yes, a healthy colony can replace a queen. Worker bees will utilize an egg that the queen laid and feed it a special cocktail of nutrients which will allow it to develop into a queen. However, sometimes the worker bees miss their window of opportunity, thus resulting in a queenless hive with no chance and creating a new queen. In this case, a beekeeper can introduce a queen to keep the hive alive. There are a number of reasons that a hive would create a new queen: 1. If the queen was removed or died. 2. If the queen was underperforming (although the worker bees may not respond to this so it's better for a beekeeper to replace the queen at the first signs of an underperforming queen). 3. If the hive is growing and healthy they will create a new queen so that the old queen and about half the bees can swarm and find a new home. This turns one colony into two colonies, which is how bees as a species survive! Hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching!

When marking the queen do I use a special marker or will an el Marko work?

Hey Michael! A craft store paint pen with a large rounded tip is best. Something like the link below should work great! www.michaels.com/marvy-uchida-bistro-bullet-tip-chalk-marker/M10367848.html?dwvar_M10367848_color=Fluorescent%20Pink#start=16

Way to much spraying surprised you didn't drown the poor buggers

We definitely want to be careful during the package installation process to not over-spray the bees with sugar syrup. I found that the nozzle on my spray bottle was releasing a very small amount of syrup with each spray, so I had to accommodate. Thanks for watching! -Melinda
