n March I started some old saved heirloom tomato and pepper seeds indoors using float trays and a grow light. I'm making a simple DIY 5 gallon bucket garden this year to test a few varieties of heirloom tomatoes and peppers. I plan to use this method each year as my test bed to narrow down all the varieties I will plant each year in the raised beds.

When my husband was active duty (30 yrs) we always planted in buckets. You couldn’t dig up the yard in military housing.

You all are so amazing!! I hope that you look back over your videos to see what you've accomplished and how you persevered. I don't know many (more like any) people who could have done what you all have. I hope you enjoy your beautiful home for many years to come!

I have a lot of issues with weeds, and am thinking of transitioning to more raised beds and buckets/ planters in the future. Side note, I have onions planted in planters this year and I must have had tomatoes in one in the past as I have a volunteer tomato coming in. Most of my tomatoes are in one of my main beds.

Yeah so far this seems so much easier than dealing with an in-ground garden or even raised beds. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Makes me very happy to see you growing things again! Good choice, buckets, no tunneling critters sucking plants back down into their lair like we have here. i have quite a few large containers in our house garden (closest to the house), plus raised beds with barriers under them. Meadow mice/voles and other critters don't like to share. Had to sprinkle blood meal around to deter the stupid deer and rabbits. I like the reservoir idea. I started growing Crowder peas years ago with a jar from my grandfather's farm that was at least ten years old, probably closer to fifteen, really. Heirlooms are awesome and nothing like a fresh tomato from the garden. Happy growing, Jeremy & Jaime! Give my best to your lovely wife, please! ~Cynthia

The only thing I've planted this year so far is red potatoes in a raised bed of my old truck tires. I have about the same collection of drywall mud buckets kept specifically for tomatoes and peppers too and will be getting those going soon. I'm way behind. Great design and utilization of left over stuff. Good luck my brother!

I was way behind also. I have a stack of tires and a 55 gal drum I want to do potatoes in but it will probably be next year.

I like this. We have a small yard and don’t want to dig up too much of it for planting. So far the tomatoes are doing well in planters, so is the okra, but I don’t think they are as deep as they should be. I like the self-watering feature.

excelent video. Well done. Everything i was thinking you needed to do you did, I have done gardening like this before. You should have success with this method. my only suggestion would be to maybe put some sort of protection on them in case you get cutworms or stray critters trying to dig them up.

1 Tablespoon of Bone Meal and Epsom salt every month, or 3 weeks if it rains heavily, and you will have bumper crops. Be sure to cut the suckers and top the vines.

Looks great! I wish I could grow heirloom tomatoes here, but alas, determinant hybrids really do much better. I'm in the North Florida panhandle, and by July, just about any tomato plant here is toast. Peppers, however, will live through December sometimes!

If you get good sunlight on the ground level, you could move them there in a few weeks. That way you could drop a string down and have them climb up the string using tomato clips. Good luck!

Well I intentionally wanted to put everything up on the deck to be away from the rabbits and deer. Much easier to tend to.

@@Guildbrookfarm If the concrete deck gets hot in the sun it will heat the water in the bottom of the bucket to temps that will unfortunately cook the plant roots. I learned that the hard way. Try to somehow get the buckets up off the floor. I used blocks and boards.

@@Guildbrookfarm Agree, but almost all soils in the bags have elements from waste plants. We designed and maged construction of one. We also mediated issues on another one. ... It's discussing. Soil companies are not obligated to include that ingredient. They test soil in one location, it doesn't mean 1" away from it, there is heavy metal or dissolved pill or something worse.

@@Guildbrookfarm And easy to move indoors to protect from frost and/or overwinter. I had one tomato plant that overwintered in my kitchen thru two winters (and 3 summers outside!)
