Excuse me, Professor Korten. I am a native speaker of Indonesian learning English. I know you speak English with a GA accent. It belongs to American English. However, the phonetic symbols which I can see in your video...belongs to RP, which belongs to British English. Take the phoneme /əʊ/. You say it /oʊ/. What makes me a little bit confused is that you pronounce short vowels long, so it is difficult for me to hear the difference between these short vowels with their long counterparts.

Thank you for this! I’ll correct it in the 2nd edition. 🙏

@@ProfessorKorten Changing your accent of English and repeating each phoneme being taught in a normal speed several times would help learners in understanding your materials. Some people change the way that they speak for certain reasons. Usually actors and actresses do this, but I think you can do the same thing to reach your goal in teaching English to your students. Yes, I hope you will have a nice video about the same topic in the future.

I think the way the vowel sounds are clustered is wrong in English. Because obviously we don’t use 1 sound to pronounce ear. Of course, we come across this pattern but it doesn’t mean that they should be a sound. For example, in “though /ðəʊ/“ the əʊ part seems to be 2 distinct sounds rather than 1.
@ProfessorKorten Жыл бұрын
Thanks for this. There is no unanimity on this, and since dipthongs produce different vowel sounds to the simple single vowel sound, I think we’re justified in addressing them as I have. This is a beginning video to introduce young learners to different sounds of the English language.

There are only 12 vowel sounds in GenAm English not 20 and the phonemic symbols that you used are wrong

Why are you adding a schwa to some sounds? You are teaching phonemes wrong.
@desmorgens31207 ай бұрын
He is a native speaker of an American English accent called 'General American'. However, the phonetic symbols employed belongs to 'Received Pronunciation'. This belongs to British English. That makes it confusing to learners. American English employs more schwas than British English.
