Excited for the crochet update! I'd suggest you get comfortable with the single crochet before you tackle the magic ring, to save yourself the frustration And your magic ring falls apart either because your yarn end is on the right instead of the left, or because you're not working over the end, or because you did the first slip to secure the ring wrong! Which is why you should get comfortable with just the movement of the single crochet first :) Crochet a longer strip and you'll see how you improve as you go!
@DoodleDate10 ай бұрын
you just blew my mind with crochet info LOL time to do some more research LOL
@fuzzymilk10 ай бұрын
@@DoodleDate if you haven't watched Bella coco, that's a really good resource for beginners. Learning with a bigger yarn is also helpful, I'd personally suggest a wool or wool mix because sometimes acrylic can be not fully opaque and that can make the stitches harder to identify. But a wool yarn in a mid tone is some of the easiest to see :)

I really struggled a lot learning to crochet until I switched to cotton yarn. I feel like because cotton yarn doesn’t really fray or go fuzzy like acrylic does, it’s a bit easier to see what you’re doing. I’ve been crocheting for about 7 or 8 years now and I still hate doing magic rings 😅

Steph, you're doing great with the crochet! I know exactly what you mean about the sensation of your hands doing something new. I've crocheted for years and am teaching myself to knit right now, it felt so ALIEN at first! Keep practicing and eventually your muscle memory will take over and itll start to feel more natural. It's awesome that you can already see when tension isnt right too, that took me ages! I'd recommended keeping those first bits you tried so you can compare them with things you make when you get the hang of it. You'll feel so stinking proud of yourself and how far you've come! ❤❤

I am amazed at your crochet progress! When I learned to do crochet all I did was single stitch and double stitch rectangles for a long time (basically I just made scarves and small blankets). Interspersed in there was a time when I forgot everything except just chain stitch so I made really long strands of chain stitch. Magic circle is another level up and everyone struggles with it coming undone all the time! The trick is to make a double loop, and leave a long tail to weave into the work afterward. I'm glad that you've got "pretty" yarn to work with now, it's definitely much more fun when your yarn is appealing. Keep at it and you'll make great progress!

I can crochet but after 45 years I still can’t knit. Brain won’t brain. Recommended thins to try….there are a million ways to hold the hook, none of them are wrong as long as it doesn’t hurt and you are not getting tense. So do watch lots of different people on KZbin and see how they hold the hook and try all of them. Sometimes that’s what makes the difference to getting a good rhythm and tension going. I was impressed by your progress, well done. I wish I could remember her name, but you might stumble across her, there is an absolutely brilliant lady out there who has lost most of her fingers and manages to crochet with the hook strapped to her hand. Her inventiveness is incredible. I actually watch her because she’s very entertaining, fingers aside.

@@DoodleDate it's evil and makes no sense! I've got a bit I've been working on since before Christmas and it's still only four inches long....I just don't get it. I can't 'read' the work like I can crochet. As soon as I drop a stitch I'm sunk. Can't pick it up. Don't know if I'm knitting or perling. Tension all over the place.
@leahgroess536110 ай бұрын
I learned to knit after at least 10 years crocheting, and I could not get it until I had someone very experienced sit with me and see what I was doing. She was able to tell me exactly what mistakes I was making and how to fix them. KZbin videos are fine and well for seeing how the stitches are done, but unless you have someone identify what specifically you're struggling with, it's so, so hard to make progress!

I’ve been crocheting for almost 20 years and you’re doing very well! Especially considering the type of yarn you’re using. It looks like you’re using a yarn that’s a bit thinner than average. That best takes a 5mm/G hook. I always suggest people start out with standard size yarn and a 6mm/J hook. That’ll help your tension, which is already very good. I don’t know if you can get it in the UK, but Amazon might have Red Heart Super Saver yarn, which is very easy to work with. And I’d start with a scarf with a foundation chain of about 20 or 30. That’s the easiest thing to do. Once you get past those first few rows it starts to become muscle memory. And if you use multicolored yarn it makes it far less tedious. Keep going! You can do it!

Sorry if people have reccomended this already but! When you're starting out it's generally easier to practice crochet with thicker yarn, it's mysteriously more forgiving and it's easier to keep track of your stitches etc when they're bigger. But, since you already have thin yarn, I'd maybe reccomend holding two yarns at once, since combined it'll be thicker! (Just remember to use a bigger hook accordingly)

Learning crochet and knitting is about developing muscle memory. I started by making small little squares of each stitch. They looked like little washcloths and I gave them to my friends 4 year old daughter to use as doll blankets. I came in and she had placed them on all her like 10000 baby dolls. The toys were scattered across the entire bedroom floor, but she covered the entire body with these Crocheted squares, like dead soldiers on a battlefield. She tells me, "shhhh! They're sleeping!!" And all I could think was, "forever!!????" It was so disturbing.

Steph, I wonder if knitting might prove easier for you. I do both and I find that knitting takes less fine motor skills and less dexterity (if that's proving to be a challenge) ❤

15:00 just a heads up, the way you're holding the half sphere at that point is inside out! You can tell because the starting tail is on top, it should be nestled inside :) Nothing wrong with it being that way but it does make some crochet techniques harder to do, so it causes a lot of beginners some frustration :'3

I’ve just started to learn to crochet but haven’t been able to practice much as I’m holding my 4 week old baby most of the time 😅 I’m really struggling on holding the yarn, I can’t find a way in which my fingers are comfy and keep a consistent amount of tension 😬
@DoodleDate10 ай бұрын
You can do it! I have trouble keeping the tension too.. i think its all about building up that muscle memory with it

just think of all the crochet pieces you make right now as Bidoof and Zigzagoon, you have to beat the low level pokemon to gain EXP for the future battles XD i think you're doing great!! if your magic circle is falling apart, try crocheting it while it's wrapped around your finger, that way it can't fall apart. keep going, i can't wait to see how you grow!

To Steph: when you’re turning your chain stitch into single crochet with rows, don’t forget to do your turning stitch! Otherwise your rectangle or square will turn into a trapezoid!

I have over 10 years with crochet and still have issues with magic rings falling apart sometimes.
