I have done two ten days course of SN GOENKA Vipassana meditation in INDIA. We were prohibited from naming and labelling our sensation and thought in our courses rather simple observation of that sensation without attaching any word or meaning to it. please help me regarding this query

I too have done 2 courses in the last 3 years in the Goenkaji tradition and have been practicing continuously. Last January, I tried deviating from not naming and labeling sensations to note/label everything in my mind. I tried it for about a month or so but couldn't continue during sitting meditation as my mind actually gets concentrated better without labeling. Now I try to label it during walking meditation or while doing activities like washing cleaning cooking or any mechanical activity.

9mos 450hr (100min/day 7days/week) - as a good faith effort - meditation doesn't work. It's gone from "I'm having an unpleasant thought" to "I'm having an unpleasant thought - and I'm observing it". A distinction w/o a difference. Not saying it doesn't work, probably only works for some people. My advice, if after 40 hours you don't notice anything - throw in the towel. If you don't notice anything and it makes you feel good - then do it. Otherwise, if you didn't get anything - more meditating won't get you there. You've been warned.

If you want to feel good, the most common and effective meditation is the in-out breath meditation, also known as Anapana Sati. Mindfulness-insight meditation, on the other hand, is meant to help you experience the true nature of your mind and body so that you can live in this chaotic world with a neutral attitude, without aversion, and face everything that comes your way, including unpleasant thoughts.
