Finally a video up my alley! I m a beginer in backpacking and hiking and no matter how much I enjoy it I cannot see myself (a middle class eastern european person) spending 600 usd or 1000 euro for a tent! With this kind of money you can buy a used car in Romania!
@WalkingNatureWorld
@WalkingNatureWorld Жыл бұрын
Awesome to hear that, thank you for the comment! It really can be intimidating when first starting in backpacking to buy everything at once and having so many choices. Hope this video helped you out some. Keep an eye on the next one in these series where we will share the clothing list.

I think the pack size discussion could be expanded. Factors that might impact the size of pack someone will need. I agreed with your basic explanation but don't think it's as easy as that. - Solo or able to share equipment. - Expected temps. Colder weather may need bulkier protection - Number of days you need to carry food for. - Budget gear can be bulkier for the same rating. Hygiene wasn't covered as you mentioned but some ability to deal with toilet stops is essential. A trowel for areas where you can bury your waste or something to carry it out if not. A pee rag for women to wipe themselves with might also save a lot of unwanted tissues in the wild.

Hello, Bob, thank you for the comment, we can take lots of great ideas for future video from it. Here our goal was only to share a beginner essential gear list - the basic stuff everybody needs to start with mostly referring to the summer season. We certainly felt like hygiene essentials deserve a separate video and the other points are very valid and necessary to cover. It seems like it can be extended to the series of videos.

Not mentioned in this video: Looking for a sleeping mat/sleeping bag? The sleeping mat insulates your back, sleeping bag insulates your upper. You can have the warmest sleeping bag but sleeping mat with a bad R value and you'll have a very cold night. Make sure that the R value of your sleeping mat and the comfort temp. of your sleeping bag are in line with the temperatures you'll be facing on your hike. Always check the night temperature as there might be big differences between day - night temperatures (temp. changes can go up to 25°c).
@WalkingNatureWorld
@WalkingNatureWorld 9 ай бұрын
Yes, this is very true, R value is very important as well as the temperature rating on a sleeping bag. Every gear list has to be adapted to the personal needs. And we always encourage people to do a further research and we are ready to answer all the questions that beginners may have.
@eladbari
@eladbari 2 ай бұрын
What about hiking in August? Does that insulaion still plays a role? A normal matress in summer is no good? Only air?
@nathanaeldesmedt686
@nathanaeldesmedt686 2 ай бұрын
@@eladbari I personally have had cold with an air mattress when hiking in the Ardennes mid summer as well as in South America when sleeping in a hammock in march. It of course depends on what is comfy for you. I personally only go for an air mattress when sleeping indoors somewhere. The moment I'm outside I'll go for an insulated mattress. Look up some R vallues to know what might work best for you!

I just got my 50L and look forward to trying it out 😁 feels comfy although a little stiff at first try. I just day hike for now but will be starting some overnights soon. Thankful for decathlon’s reasonable prices.. so much backpacking gear is so expensive!

Thanks for the comment! Hope you enjoy wearing your pack! It is a decent pack for the price. And for day hikes or overnights it should serve you great. We also started oit with all Decathlon stuff being on a budget and having no knowledge whatsoever. But it allowed us to get all the equipment needed and start right away. Also their quality is great and return policy which is a bonus.

I like decathlon clothing but dont use much of their other gear. Best to avoid inflating your pad by mouth. It encourages mould and mildew inside. Best to use a pump sack or a small electric pump. They dont weigh much.
@WalkingNatureWorld
@WalkingNatureWorld Жыл бұрын
They have lots of clothing options that's true, may do a different video about it too. Almost all our hiking clothing is from there. We wanted to use a pump in a store but there wasn't any available. Great tip though! Thanks!
Жыл бұрын
I would rather take the compressed foam mat over one of those inflatable mats if you are a beginner. It will for sure have to go on the outside, but will stand up to a lot more abuse. And then later invest in a proper inflatable mat from a brand such as Thermarest or Nemo.
@lidewijvos
@lidewijvos 7 ай бұрын
Yes don't inflate with your mouth since the moisture in your breath will cool down more than air. Your sleeping pad will insulate less and you will be cold(er). Use a pump sack instead.

Great video! I didn't know they did water filters now! Decathlon has some great budget clothing too (too bad their clothing colours are seriously boring). My choices generally aim for weight savings: Trek100 Thermal Pants (153g size m) Trek100 Fleece Glove Liners (23g size s) NH100 Rain Jacket (209g size m) Forclaz MT50 Synthetic Padded Jacket (386g size m) Trek900 Sunhat (59g) Wedze Skihat/beanie (22g) Also have a decent headlamp! Forclaz Bivouac 500 Headlamp (43g) Look forward to more videos. Keep well :)

So, this dude is blowing up the pad in the store without a pump bag. I hope he bought that exact one, because he just blew bacteria and moisture into the pad and I would consider that one not only used, but ruined too. I don't think you should really be giving advice to anyone after that.

6:46 is this setup safe since these gas canister refills are not as sturdy? I had been reading some that says that if the weight is too high the top might cave in, what is your experience with this setup since I am thinking to use a BRS stove on it with an adaptor....
@WalkingNatureWorld
@WalkingNatureWorld Жыл бұрын
That setup is not that safe as you can see we use sone rocks to stabilize it. We much prefer using some flatter canisters if having a choice. We haven't used a setup with an adaptor so can't comment on that. Hope other people who tried it can leave you some feedback.

Hi, the height of the tent is 58cm and the backpack is 58cm high so it can be a bit tight. If possible it would be better to go to the Decathlon store and try to fit it in and see.

i happened to have this setup and i can confirm it works well. the tent is so good and so cheap. it takes some space but that is it. the sleeping matress tend to loose air sometimes but ok its still working. the sleeping bag is little but tends to be cold so make sure you don't use it in the alps or stuff like that, even in summer... i think this is the killer startink kit, just buy it all, save so much money, don't worry whats gone break or not and buy better stuff if you think it is not enough or if you want to upgrade...
@WalkingNatureWorld
@WalkingNatureWorld 3 ай бұрын
Amazing to hear that you have the same kit shown in the video and share your experience with it, it is much appreciated! Agree about the sleeping bag suitable only for warm summer weather, the comfort temperature should be the main indicator. You sum it up very well, saying that it's a great starter kit with which you won't break the bank and won't worry about things breaking. Although we usually didn't have any bad quality issues with Decathlon stuff. It gets ruined only with time but overall holds up pretty well.
